ZTE launches Nubia range of high-end devices, announces Z5 quad-core smartphone

ZTE unveils highend Nubia mobile line, launches Z5 quadcore, 13megapixel, Italian design

ZTE’s plan to reinvent itself as a high-end smartphone was missing one, crucial ingredient — a European-sounding name that ended in “…ia” to brand its new range of top-level devices. That’s why the company has just announced Nubia, which apparently means “cloudy” in Latin. It’s also teased details of the first handset to arrive under this new cloud (geddit?), the Z5. This new 5-inch smartphone will have quad-core internals, a 13-megapixel camera and “Italian” design — which makes us hope above hope that they hired Pininfarina and it’ll come in Ferrari Red.

Samsung gets official with the Galaxy Premier: 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED, 8MP camera, GS III styling

Samsung gets official with the Galaxy Premier 465inch HD Super AMOLED, 8MP camera, GS III styling

If Samsung took a wrong turn with its brand-diluting Galaxy S III Mini, then the much-leaked Galaxy Premier is where it gets back on track. The phone keeps the outward visage of the Galaxy S III and makes only modest sacrifices in order to reach a wider audience. These include a slightly shrunken 4.65-inch screen, which still blazes away with a full 720 x 1,280 Super AMOLED panel, an acceptable dual-core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The cameras haven’t been messed with — we’re still looking at an 8-megapixel rear and a 1.9-megapixel front-facer — while connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. So far, the phone has only been made official in the Ukraine, where it’s been pegged for a November release and priced at 5,555 Ukrainian hryvnias — an exotic-sounding figure that very roughly translates to $680.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan’s Election Commission says the country’s next presidential election will be held on April 5, 2014, in a vote that is seen as crucial for the future of the war-ravaged country.

OLPCs hacked by Ethiopian kids on their own in 5 months

While I find it nigh impossible to believe that leaving a typewriter in the room with a bunch of monkeys would eventually see one of the Bard’s sonnets typed out (an experiment was run in the past to debunk such an idea), it is not too hard to see us humans are extremely intelligent compared to primates. For instance, when you leave OLPCs with a bunch of Ethiopian kids without any knowledge of it, all it took was just 5 months to hack the device. Hack, as in circumventing security measures of the operating system to customize settings while activating disabled hardware.

The OLPCs in question here are actually Motorola Xoom tablets that are powered by solar chargers while running on custom software, given to kids in schools. Each of these Xooms came pre-loaded with a custom English-language operating system and SD cards with tracking software, and it was discovered that within a time period of five months, they managed to hacked Android, so to speak. After all, someone disabled the camera, and the kids realized that the Xoom came with a camera and decided to just make it work.

It is stories like these that bring a tear to my eye. More empowerment and knowledge to these kids who thoroughly deserved the OLPC project – and more!

HP ElitePad 900 knocks on the FCC

It seems that the folks over at the FCC are pretty busy, and this time around, they have to spend their time going through just what the HP ElitePad 900 is capable of offering, and since it has already arrived at the doorsteps of the FCC, it goes to show that the chances of the HP ElitePad 900 hitting the mass market has increased by a whole lot. The particular HP ElitePad 900 model that we are talking about here is a 3G version which targets road warriors, sporting the 850MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands that will play nice with AT&T, T-Mobile and Canadian networks.

Do not expect a rabbit or any other creature to pop out from the proverbial magician’s hat here, as there is an indication that NFC support is thrown into the mix amidst dual-band 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity options. At least this adds yet another option to folks who want more offerings in the enterprise tablet market in the coming year.

iPhone 5 being prepared for China release

The iPhone 5, touted to be the best iPhone yet, has just cleared the final hurdles that are in place before it is able to hit the China market. The latest iPhone model is compatible with the two largest networks in that part of the world, namely the GSM and CDMA networks. No idea on whether Apple will now take the big step of selling their iPhone in the world’s most populous country, but we would not rule it out that the iPhone 5 should pop up on China Unicom’s GSM network in due time. After all, with a CDMA (called the A1442 on a chart provided by Sina) and a GSM (A1429) model have both been approved, opening up the door for China Telecom to make millions of dollars along the way as well.

Right now, the most recent iPhone model in China (barring Hong Kong, of course) is still the iPhone 4S, so hopefully with the latest set of approvals, the iPhone 5 will be able to make its sales mark in China before 2013 rolls around. It would definitely make for a decent Lunar New Year present if you’re into that sort of thing.

Apple delays turn-by-turn navigation in Australia

Apple Maps isn’t exactly known for its quality, having garnered so many user complaints that Apple CEO Tim Cook offered a written apology. Now it seems the lagging service has developed another limp, with Apple electing to delay turn-by-turn navigation for Australian users. Originally, the country was set to get the feature this month.

According to Apple’s website, Australian users won’t get the turn-by-turn navigation feature until an unspecified date in November. Presently, the feature is available in 52 other countries, including fairly obscure locations. Back when it was first released in Australia, Apple Maps fubared quite a few landmarks and locations with incorrect placement and wrong names.

The original feature, Directions, which differs from turn-by-turn, had the peculiar habit of sending drivers towards bodies of water and the sides of buildings, and other places cars should not venture. This same issue is now marring turn-by-turn, with users (outside of Australia) reporting that it often gives the wrong instructions. Overall, things still aren’t looking up for Apple Maps.

This comes after a source claimed that Scott Forstall’s upcoming departure from Apple is due, primarily, to his refusal to sign an apology letter about the travesty that is Apple Maps. Forstall, who already has his share of enemies inside of Apple, insisted that the criticism regarding the service could be dealt with without an apology, according to the source. Ultimately CEO Cook ended up signing the apology, which states: “We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers.”

‘Tattoo Nightmares’: Man’s Drunk Friend Gave Him A Huge Tribal Tattoo (VIDEO)

Marshall was a cautionary tale about getting tattoos while drunk. He came into the shop on “Tattoo Nightmares” with a huge tribal tat on his forearm that he’d had now for about six years. He said it was the result of a night out partying with his friend Kara.

A nearby tattoo shop was running a special. If you agree to be blindfolded, your tattoo is free. Drunk and encouraged by his friend, Marshall was on board.

“I’m sitting there blindfolded and Kara’s being real quiet, which is odd, ‘cuz normally she’s a loud drunk,” he said. When they pulled the blindfold off, Kara revealed that it was her who had done his tattoo. So not only did he not have a professional tattoo artist inking him, but it was someone who was very drunk.
