SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 15, 2012

Welcome back to Monday everyone – we’ve got a heaping helping of news to recap, so let’s dive right in. Today we found out that Apple’s manufacturing partnership with Samsung may not last much longer, and that the Google Nexus 7 might just be the best-selling Android tablet ever (which, given its immense popularity, doesn’t surprise us in the least). One Walmart store has its shelves fully stocked with copies of Windows 8, and this afternoon, we have reason to believe that a new, slimmer iMac may be in the pipeline.

By now, you’ve probably heard plenty of iPad Mini rumors, but today we found out that Apple may reveal a new Mac Mini alongside the bite-sized tablet. Today we saw some pictures that appear to have been snapped by the camera on the yet-unannounced Nexus 4, and Apple has managed to bring former Amazon executive William Stasior on to oversee the continuing development of Siri. Android 4.1.2 was sent out to eager Galaxy Nexus owners today, and just in case you missed Felix Baumgartner’s death-defying jump over the weekend, you can see the highlights again today – complete with terrifying shots from his helmet cam.

LG delivered its Jelly Bean update schedule for a few of its devices today, and speaking of LG, AT&T announced that the Optimus G goes up for pre-order tomorrow with a price tag of $200. We heard that Windows 8 is getting an underwhelming response from vendors today, and Nintendo dropped the price of the original Wii down to just $130 in anticipation of the holiday rush. A new study is claiming that file sharers actually buy more music than people who don’t partake in that rather controversial activity, and Microsoft released a brand new Windows 8 ad today.

Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition players found out that they’re in for a treat tomorrow, while Notch was busy showing off new footage from his upcoming game 0x10c and Microsoft was handing out Xbox Live bans to Halo 4 pirates. Activision announced today that Call of Duty Elite will be free with Black Ops II, and we were told that the Wii U gamepad boasts a latency of only 1/60 of a second. Google is in trouble in Europe over privacy concerns again, and we got to take a look at a new robotic wheelchair that can actually walk up stairs. How cool is that?

Finally tonight, we have quite a few original articles for you to have a look at. Chris Burns puts the Optimus G through its gaming paces with Wild Blood, and we pit Xbox Music, Spotify, iTunes, and Google Music against one another to see the strengths and weaknesses of all four. We’ve got a new review of the Huawei Ascend D1 quad XL by Chris Burns, and a review of the Motorola Electrify 2 by your humble wrapper-upper. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Borderlands 2 makes strong showing on September software chart

We already took a look at gaming hardware sales for September, so now it’s time to pore over the software chart for the month. Unsurprisingly, Madden NFL 13 took the top spot for the month of September, selling over 2.55 million copies according to NPD (via NeoGAF). NPD told GameSpot that Madden NFL 13 sales managed to climb 11% over Madden NFL 12 sales in its first month, which is definitely good news for Electronic Arts and its yearly football franchise.

Of course, we expect Madden to sell well, so the fact that it took the top spot in September is no surprise. What is surprising, however, is that Borderlands 2 managed to come in second place. According to NPD’s numbers, Borderlands 2 sold 1.48 million copies in September, and analyst Anita Frazier tells Game Informer that represents a 234% increase over the first month sales of the original Borderlands. It’s important to remember that NPD only reports sales numbers for physical media, so none of Borderlands 2‘s digital PC sales are counted in that 1.48 million figure. In other words, Borderlands 2 could have easily sold more than 2 million copies during the month of September.

Also interesting: Guild Wars 2 managed to beat out the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria. Of course, we’re assuming that most of the sales for both Guild Wars 2 and Mists of Pandaria were digital, so it’s hard to say that Guild Wars 2 is the clear winner with any certainty. Still, it’s interesting to see that NPD has Guild Wars 2 outselling Mists of Pandaria. Have a look at the full top ten software list for September:

1. Madden NFL 13 – Electronic Arts (360, PS3, Wii, Vita)
2. Borderlands 2 – Take-Two Interactive (360, PS3, PC)
3. FIFA Soccer 13 – Electronic Arts (PS3, 360, Vita, Wii, 3DS, PSP)
4. New Super Mario Bros. 2 – Nintendo (3DS)
5. Guild Wars 2 – NCSoft (PC)
6. NHL 13 – Electronic Arts (360, PS3)
7. World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria – Activision Blizzard (PC)
8. NCAA Football 13 – Electronic Arts (360, PS3)
9. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes – Warner Bros. Interactive (360, Wii, 3DS, DS, PS3, Vita, PC)
10. Battlefield 3 – Electronic Arts (360, PS3, PC)

In September, we saw Battlefield 3 claw its way back into the top 10, most likely due to the recent release of the Battlefield 3 Premium Edition. Overall, it was a good month for sports games (and Electronic Arts), but it wasn’t so great for game sales in general. Software sales were down 14% year-over-year, but we can probably expect them to climb this month as we begin to close in on the holiday season. Stay tuned.

Activision files for “Sing Hero” trademark, points at possible release on mobile devices

ActivisionPlaying Rock Band with my friends have yielded some pretty amusing results, especially watching them play as the singer and seeing them try to hit certain notes. However if you’ve always enjoyed playing as the singer, you might be interested to learn that Activision has filed for a “Sing Hero” trademark. This is not the first time Activision filed for the trademark (first time back in 2009), so technically this would be a re-application.

Rather interestingly though this particular trademark describes “Sing Hero” as a game for “mobile and cellular phones, personal digital assistants, electronic organizers and electronic notepads, handheld computers, and portable and handheld digital electronic devices,” indicating that it could arrive on mobile devices much like Guitar Hero for iOS. No word on when such a game would materialize, but what do you guys think? Anyone interested in a karaoke game on their mobile device?

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 26, 2012

We’ve made it through hump day, which means only two more work days to go before the weekend arrives again. Yesterday, we found out about a hack that was resetting Samsung Galaxy S IIIs to their factory settings. Samsung said that the security hole had since been fixed, but today we heard that the remote hack isn’t limited to just Samsung devices. The iPhone 5 might be heading to China soon, and we heard that Apple’s new Lightning connector isn’t identical on both sides. Google maps is rumored to be hitting iOS 6 by the end of the year, which goes hand-in-hand with new report that claims Apple ditched Google Maps because it doesn’t offer turn-by-turn navigation.

Facebook has been axing fake accounts left and right today, while we learned that the Galaxy S III will soon be launching at MetroPCS. Apple has been suspiciously ordering large quantities of carbon fiber, and RIM experienced a stock boost today after its BlackBerry 10 presentation yesterday. Xbox Music pricing details “leaked” out today, and Amazon has launched Vine.com, a new shopping service for those concerned about the environment.

Nintendo gave us a list of 23 titles that will launch alongside the Wii U on November 18, while Boost Mobile announced the LG Venice (which looks awfully similar to the LG Optimus L7). Facebook has implemented Dropbox integration for sharing among groups, and a new Nook video is taking a few shots at both Netflix and Amazon. O2 and HTC announced today that they will be selling an incoming, yet-unannounced smartphone without a charger, seemingly to cut down on the amount of spare chargers floating around out there.

Humble Indie Bundle 6 has a bunch of new games on offer for those who pay more than the average, and Activision delivered new details on the Zombies mode in Black Ops II today. Google launched Google Play services for Android developers today, which allows them to integrate a number of Google services into their apps. Finally tonight, Chris Davies takes a closer look at the fight ahead of the Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets, Chris Burns has a new review of the HiddenRadio Wireless Speaker, and Ewdison Then has reviews of both the Monster Inspiration Headphones and the BMW X1 Crossover, so be sure to give all of those a look!

Black Ops II Zombies mode debuts in new video

One of the biggest talking points about the original Black Ops was Zombies mode. When Activision and Treyarch announced Call of Duty: Black Ops II, footage from the game’s Zombies mode was surprisingly absent, but that all changed today. After teasing the mode last week, Activision has released a new trailer for Zombies, and a new write-up from Polygon gives us an idea of what we can expect to find when we delve into Zombies mode once more.

As it turns out, Zombies mode will be a little deeper than just “shoot all the zombies” this time around. The traditional game mode where players team up to take on wave after wave of zombies is still there, rest assured, but Zombies in Black Ops II will feature two additional modes: Tranzit and Grief. If you’re a Zombies fan, you might want to brace yourself before reading on, because both modes sound excellent.

In Tranzit, players will work cooperatively to make it through a zombie-based story mode. Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia says players will have a “massive world” to explore, and there will be items to collect and defenses to build as well. Did we mention that there’s a bus to use for transportation? There is, and though it provides some degree of shelter, it like like zombies can also board the bus, leading to a potentially sticky situation. Tranzit mode will apparently have ties to the story behind the Moon map that released for the original Black Ops, though Lamia didn’t get into specifics when talking about how the two are related.

Changing gears completely, we come to Grief mode. This is a competitive survival mode that pits two teams of varying sizes against groups of zombies. The teams will compete to be the last team standing, though here’s the twist: you can’t shoot players on the other team. You’ll have plenty of ways to screw them over though, hence the name. It should give us an interesting spin on the played out team deathmatch mode, and that is definitely something to look forward to.

All in all, these new modes sound great, especially Tranzit mode, which immediately reminds us of the Arma II mod DayZ. We’re told to expect more information on Black Ops II‘s multiplayer modes later on this week, so you can bet we’ll be keeping an eye out for those. In the meantime, let us know what you think of Tranzit and Grief modes – have they managed to pique your interest?

Black Ops II Wii U details unleashed

As expected, Nintendo confirmed today that Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be coming to Wii U. Gameplay obviously won’t be too much different from its Xbox 360, PS3, and PC counterparts, but there are some features exclusive to the Wii U that helps this particular version standout from the crowd. Activision’s Eric Hirshberg ran through these features during Nintendo’s event today, with one of the most notable being that the game can be played on the Wii U GamePad’s screen.

That’s true for both local co-op and solo play. If you’re playing with a buddy, one of you can play on the TV and the other can play on the GamePad, whereas if you’re playing solo, you can play on the GamePad while the other people in your home do something entirely different with the TV. There will be an online multiplayer mode that lets players team up against AI enemies, but at the moment, we don’t know if that mode will feature alongside regular competitive multiplayer or if it will replace it entirely. Activision and Treyarch aren’t ready to talk about multiplayer in much depth yet, so expect more details on that soon.

According to VG247, Black Ops II on Wii U will feature “the most advanced textures, lighting and shadowing systems in series history,” in full force, and it will also give players a number of controller options. Those with the Wii U version will be able to play with the Wii U GamePad, the Wii remote, the Classic Controller Pro, and the new Wii U Pro Controller (which, according to Michael Pachter, may not exist were it not for the insistence of publishers like Activision). Zombies will also make a return in the Wii U version, but were going to have to wait for more details on that mode, and the Wii U version will also boast an expanded create-a-class feature, League Play, score streaks, and plenty of weapon enhancements, features we’re assuming will also be present in the other versions.

Finally, Activision says that the Wii U version is capable of running at 60fps in 1080p, even while playing online. That may not be the case when you’re playing on the TV and also streaming to the GamePad, but at least it’ll run at 60fps most of the time. All in all, the Wii U version of Black Ops II sounds like it will be able to hold its own, and we’re excited to find out more. Will you be picking up Black Ops II on Wii U, or do you need to find out more before you make that decision?

Activision details three Black Ops II special editions

With all of the hype surrounding Black Ops II, a collector’s edition was inevitable. Activision has done us one better, though, and announced a total of three collector’s editions for the game. The expected Hardened Edition and PC Digital Deluxe edition are present, along with the Care Package Edition, which comes packed full of goodies for the die-hard Call of Duty fan.

Starting off with the Hardened Edition, you’ll be getting the game (naturally), along with the Nuketown Zombies map and the Nuketown 2025 map. Also included in this package is a 2-sided steel book for your game disc, a copy of the Black Ops II soundtrack, two limited edition challenge coins “that serve as your key to exclusive digital content,” two player card backgrounds, and a multiplayer weapon skin. Those buying the Xbox 360 version will get a CLAW Avatar prop and a Zombie Avatar costume, while those on PS3 will be getting a dynamic multiplayer Turbine theme and a dynamic Zombies theme. The Hardened Edition will set you back $79.99, which isn’t too bad a price considering the bonuses you’re getting.

The Care Package Edition is almost exactly the same as the Hardened Edition, only with this one you’re getting a rather expensive bonus: a remote controlled MQ-27 Dragonfire Drone. The drone is a pretty excellent addition, but be prepared to shell out a significant amount of money for it, as the Care Package Edition comes in at $179.99. Also detailed today was the PC Digital Deluxe Edition, which comes with all of the bonuses featured in the Hardened Edition, but instead of Avatar items or dynamic themes, PC players will get a download code for Call of Duty: World at War. The PC Digitial Deluxe Edition also costs the same as the Hardened Edition – $79.99.

Strangely enough, a subscription to Call of Duty Elite doesn’t appear to be included in these special editions. After including an Elite membership with Modern Warfare 3‘s special editions, we assumed that Activision would do the same with Black Ops II, but that assumption was apparently wrong. Will you be picking up one of these Black Ops II special editions, or is it the standard edition for you?

Angry Birds Trilogy will be getting DLCs to justify its $40 price tag

Back in July we reported that an Angry Birds Trilogy would be making its way onto the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo 3DS. For those who might not have seen the news, well Angry Birds Trilogy is basically a compilation of the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio, all three of which will be bundled together and sold for a packaged price of $40 for home consoles, while the 3DS version will be sold for $30. This is a pretty expensive game considering that its mobile version costs a fraction of its price, but according to Activision who spoke to Kotaku, this is “justifiable” because the game will be receiving DLCs on top of the regular levels.

Not just a rehash of the mobile version, Angry Birds Trilogy is expected to feature 19 new levels, 1080p graphics, motion control support, achievements and other features not seen in the mobile versions. There are reportedly two DLCs planned for the game although it was not stated as to whether these DLCs will be free or if they will bring about additional costs. In any case it seems a little ridiculous that Activision will start charging for the DLCs considering how much more they are asking for the game itself, but what do you guys think? Should the DLCs be free, or should they be charged?

Black Ops II reportedly in the works for Wii U

It would seem that Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be getting a release on Wii U, if the LinkedIn profile of one QA tester from Activision is to be believed. Uncovered by IGN, this profile belongs to someone named Randall (though details on the account have been changed since the discovery), and claims that he performed “QA testing on PS3 and Wii U” while working at Treyarch. His profile also said that he did multiplayer testing while working with the team, along with “ad hoc testing, and regression.”

He’s been performing those duties since May, which suggests that the Wii U version of Black Ops II has been in development since at least then. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise to hear that Black Ops II is in development for Wii U, as its predecessor appeared on the original Wii. Indeed, many Call of Duty titles have been featured on Wii too, with the most notable exception being Modern Warfare 2.

Most of those ports were pretty solid too, if not as fully-featured as their Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts. That should all change with the Wii U though, as it won’t suffer from the same hardware limitations the original Wii did. Still, that’s assuming that Black Ops II is coming to Wii U in the first place, and even though we’ve received some pretty solid evidence that it is, neither Activision nor Nintendo have made any announcements yet.

We have a feeling that it is coming, but Activision may be waiting to announce it until Nintendo unleashes more details about the Wii U. Remember, much to dismay of players, Nintendo still hasn’t talked system specs, pricing or even given us an actual release date yet, despite the fact that we’re supposedly only a couple of months away from launch. Once that information is out there, Activision will probably announce Black Ops II. For now though, it remains confirmed only for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, and it’s hitting those platforms on November 13. Stay tuned for more details.

Mists of Pandaria’s excellent opening cinematic revealed

The release date for World of Warcraft‘s latest expansion, Mists of Pandaria, is right around the corner, and as such, Blizzard has started to ramp up the marketing. Today we’re being treated to a brand new cinematic trailer for the game, and we have to say it’s pretty excellent. The question is: will it be enough to get players interested in returning to World of Warcraft?

The trailer focuses on a Human and an Orc who have washed ashore in a strange place after a naval battle. Once they discover each other, they begin fighting it what appears to be some kind of old ruins, destroying some ancient-looking relics in the process. It’s then that one of the Pandaren interrupts and shows them both what’s what. After both of them have been beaten back by the Panda, the Human and the Orc realize that they have washed up on Pandaria, and we’re treated to shots of sprawling, beautiful wilderness, populated by Pandaren who are training for battle.

It’s definitely one of the better cinematic trailers we’ve seen in a long time. With an exciting battle, a wonderful soundtrack, and a little bit of humor, cinematic trailers don’t get much better. Blizzard knows it has to impress too, as World of Warcraft‘s numbers have been slipping a bit lately. Couple that with the fact that reaction to Mists of Pandaria was mixed when the expansion was revealed at BlizzCon last year, and Blizzard has its work cut out for it.

World of Warcraft‘s subscriber numbers will almost certainly increase once Mists of Pandaria is released, but the hard part will be getting those returning (or new) subscribers to hang around once they’ve finished the expansion. Blizzard has wowed us with the opening cinematic, but now it has to wow us with the expansion itself. We don’t have much longer to wait, as Mists of Pandaria is releasing on September 25.
