Tactilu Sensor Bracelet: Touch People from a Distance

You can touch people from all over the world with kindness, but now you can use something called the Tactilu to literally touch people, even when you’re miles apart.

The Tactilu is a wrist device that lets its wearers communicate and “touch” each other, but only on the wrist for obvious reasons. Its described by its maker as a bracelet for remote tactile communication.

    Sensor bracelet

The Tactilu is powered by an Arduino Pro mini microcontroller and a custom circuit board with a Bluetooth module. It connects and communicates to another device via Bluetooth or through the Internet to deliver the other person’s “touch” using actuators mounted on the inside of the bracelet.

It’s still a work in progress, so expect to see more changes to its shape and form before the final version’s eventual release.

The Tactilu was made by Poland-based design studio panGenerator together with the Polish bureau of Cheil for ITAKA Foundation.

Natalia Project is perfect for civil rights activists

There will always be tyranny in this world, and of course, it is up to the rest of the general populace to step up and be responsible in toppling such tyrants, although most of the time, such activists will be at a disadvantage for obvious reasons – they lack the machinery, military might and of course, financial backing to take up so public a cause. Not only that, the risks are high for campaigners, as they could end up beaten, kidnapped or in the very extreme, murdered, whih is why Civil Rights Defenders in Stockholm has rolled out the Natalia Project.

Why the Natalia Project? This particular title was named after Natalia Estemirova, a human rights activist who was abducted and subsequently, murdered, in Chechnya in 2009. The Natalia Project will see the development of an electronic bracelet which will be able to send a pre-programmed text alarm should it be activated or forcibly removed. Not only that, within the bracelet lies a wireless assault alarm system that will hopefully draw immediate attention to any assaults on human rights activists.

Civil Rights Defenders has so far remained rather quiet on the kind of technology that they have packed in the Natalia Project, but this is understandable. We do know, however, that it will use GPS and GSM technology, in addition to the fact that bracelet itself has been programmed with “individual protocols for security.” Apart from the bracelets, the Natalia Project will also encourage folks to sign up using Twitter or Facebook so that they will be on the receiving end of weekly updates on the project, in addition to being part of a global alert network. Civil Rights Defenders has every intention of deploying 30 of such bracelets sometime this year, and want to see up to 55 of these in use by 2014. Unfortunately, only one has been funded to date.

LinkMe Puts Your Messages on Your Wrist

Several years back, I spotted these watches that could be programmed to display scrolling messages. The problem was that they were pretty tricky to program, and had significant limitations in terms of the length of messages you could display. Fast forward to 2013, and we have LinkMe, a dot-matrix LED moving message board which can display messages sent over Bluetooth.

    linkme wristband

Instead of just outputting silly messages, the elliptical LinkMe bracelet can display messages sent to you via SMS, Twitter or Facebook. Simply configure the companion smartphone app to display messages from specific senders and you can read messages without having to take the phone out of your pocket. In addition to working as a display for messages, the LinkMe works as a watch, and you can also program custom messages so you can use it like a wrist-worn billboard too.

Matt Sandy, Colin Glaum and Tim Goldburt – the team behind the LinkMe – are currently raising funds for production of the LinkMe over on Kickstarter. For early backers, a pledge of at least $99(USD) will get you a LinkMe bracelet in red. For $120, you can get the limited-edition blue model, which looks even cooler, IMHO. You’ll need to get in on the project before May 5, 2013 if you want one of the first batch.

Embrace+ Bracelet: Like a Smartwatch without the Watch Part

Maybe I’m an old-fashioned geek, but I’m never really understood the interest in a bracelet or a watch that can notify you of what’s going on your smartphone. I mean, all you have to do when it beeps or vibrates his pull it out of your pocket to see what’s going on. It seems like that would be much easier than trying to remember what notification a specific color on a bracelet goes with.

    embrace 1

If you like technology that keeps you from the first-world problem of having to pull your phone out of your pocket, a new product has landed on Kickstarter called the Embrace+. The device is a bracelet that has RGB LED lighting inside, which makes the bracelet glow. The color of the bracelet can be customized to notify you of just about anything your iPhone or Android device can do. Simply use the companion app to attach notification colors to events on your smartphone.

    embrace 2

For instance, if you want bracelet to turn blue when a new Facebook post is made, it will do it. If you want the device to turn red when someone retweets your posts, you can do that too. You can even set the bracelet to show you a color when the battery on your smartphone is low, or you have an upcoming appointment.

If you want one of the Embrace+ bracelets, you’ll need to pledge $39(USD) or more and can expect delivery in June – assuming the project hits its rather lofty $220,000 funding goal by March 23, 2013.

Flask Bangle Bracelet Lets You Wear Your Drink Around Your Wrists

Whether you need to stay hydrated or you’re just a drunk, you should have a flask. But if you find that carrying one is inconvenient, then you might want to wear one instead. We have the FlaskTie for the guys, and now the Flask Bangle for the ladies.

    Flask Cocktail

These Flask Bangles were designed by none other than Cynthia Rowley. Those who fancy accessories like these and those who love the fact that it’s actually more than just a bracelet will love them. Unfortunately, the $225 fashion accessory is currently sold out (yes, it’s that popular) but you can sign up to get in-stock notifications.

Women who aren’t into huge, chunky accessories might want to skip this, though, and stick with actual flasks they can hold and carry instead.

USB Bracelet: Never Lose a Flash Drive Again

If there’s one thing that I’ve lost a lot of over the years, it’s USB flash drives. From people just taking them, to just losing them because of their diminutive size, USB drives need to be replaced at rapid rate. However, if you had a USB drive hidden in your bracelet, you’d probably be less likely to misplace it.
