Canada could drop banhammer on Huawei due to security worries

Huawei logoIt was not too many days ago when the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence did share their recommendation for U.S. companies to actually be more wary of both Huawei and ZTE, as those two Chinese firms were not to be trusted, and a change in vendors would come across as highly recommended. There is this cloud hanging over the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence’s heads that the Chinese government could covertly use both companies as a platform to spy on the U.S., with Huawei and ZTE stepping forward to naturally deny those allegations. Our friends living in the Great White North too, have their alert levels stepped up.

Canada originally intended to construct a secure network which would carry government calls, emails and data services with Huawei being bandied about to be a vendor, but it seems that with the latest development and security concerns, Canada might just drop Huawei from the project altogether. What do you think about this – unnecessary paranoia, or good old fashioned common sense?

Canada vaguely hints it’ll block Huawei from government projects, cites security concerns

Canada mulls blocking Huawei from government projects citing security concerns

After the hammering Huawei received from the US Congress, it was probably hoping to catch a break north of the border. Unfortunately for Huawei, Canada’s government has obtusely hinted that it, too, would block the company from bidding to build its new secure network. Spokesman Andrew MacDougall said it would use national security provisions to avoid international trade laws, and when asked directly about the Chinese company, was quoted as saying “I’ll leave it to you if you think… Huawei should be a part of a Canadian government security system.” The telecoms business may think it can get around the any obstacles because it has a locally incorporated subsidiary — but given the clout of those lobbying against it, it probably shouldn’t get its hopes up.

Motorola RAZR HD LTE now available in Canada through Rogers for $100

Motorola RAZR HD LTE now available in Canada through Rogers for $100

Motorola had said its dearest RAZR HD LTE would be coming “later this fall” as an exclusive to Rogers, and today’s the day that relatively thin and powerful Android handset hits shelves across the border. Available now for $100 (with the obligatory three-year commitment, of course), the RAZR HD LTE will hand interested Canadians a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich (sorry, no Jelly Bean for now), a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD, 720p display and a 1.5GHz, dual-core S4 CPU — not to mention the ability to surf on Rogers’ LTE waves in areas where the network’s live. Meanwhile, those who would like to go the “outright” way will have to spend a cool $600 on Moto’s Kevlar-sporting slab, but, needless to say, that’s the price folks have to pay for walking out the door with a bit of leeway. Usually we’d say you should check out Rogers’ website to snag one for yourself, however the site appears to be experiencing some technical difficulties right now — but, hey, there’s always the good ol’ brick-and-mortar store.

RIM’s PlayBook disappearing from online retailers in the US

RIM's PlayBook no longer available from US online stores

If you want to get your hands on RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook, you might be running out of time. It seems that the QNX-based device is no longer available in the US from retailers like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, RadioShack and Staples, with Amazon and RIM’s own online store being the exceptions. We’re wondering if this means newer PlayBooks are in the works — we’ve already seen updated 4G LTE models out in the open and recent OS updates indicate the company hasn’t given up on the much-maligned PlayBook. Potential upgrades include the upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS, and hardware improvements wouldn’t be a bad idea (Perhaps a flip-out keyboard addition a la Microsoft Surface?). In any case, RIM might want to move fast if it wants any chance of competing in the increasingly crowded tablet space.

Space Invaders Light Installation is Exactly How I Picture the Invasion

This is how the end of the world begins. The landscape is filled with thousands of these glowing invaders. You can shoot and shoot, picking them off one by one, but they just keep coming in wave after wave. Dear God, will we ever be rid of them? I heard an rumor that some guy in Iowa shot down the mother-ship, but I don’t know man. They just keep marching across the sky.

space invaders led

Soon my platoon will run out of ammo. These aliens don’t even care. They just keep flapping their arms. Also, soon those pylons that we are taking cover behind will be all shot up. Tell my wife and kids I love them. I gotta go kill some more of these green bastids.

Yeah, that’s how it happens. But anyway, enjoy this Space Invaders LED light show in the streets of Toronto, Canada. Then go prepare for the inevitable day when the aliens arrive.

Nokia Lumia 920 to be a Rogers exclusive in Canada, we wonder if red is an option

Nokia Lumia 920 to be Rogers exclusive in Canada, we wonder if red is an option

Where goeth AT&T, so often goeth its one-time partner Rogers. That’s certainly true for the Nokia Lumia 920: Rogers has confirmed that it will have an exclusive on the Windows Phone 8 flagship in Canada, much as AT&T has a lock on the device in the US. While there’s no pricing or color options yet, the Canuck model will share the November shipping window and LTE support, and it’s easy to imagine Rogers gravitating towards its signature (and coincidentally patriotic) red. Other Canadian carriers haven’t chipped in about the Lumia 820; if history is any indicator, though, we’d anticipate the less expensive portion of Nokia’s lineup going Telus’ way.

Rogers LTE hits 18 new regions, delivers speedy data in Saskatoon

Rogers LTE hits 18 new regions, delivers speedy data in Saskatoon

Rogers promised that October 1st would be a grand day for its LTE expansion plans, and we’re now learning that it might have been underpromising to overdeliver later. The carrier just flicked the 4G switch for 18 cities and regions, or eight more territories than it had promised just two weeks ago. Most of the coverage still focuses on the southern tip of Ontario, including London, the Oshawa area and RIM’s hometown of Waterloo, but there’s a much more trans-Canada bent to the official deployment. Western cities like Saskatoon and Victoria now fit into Rogers’ LTE map beyond a previously announced Edmonton, while the Quebec rollout is going past Quebec City to include Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières. All told, the one day of growth is enough to supply Rogers LTE to almost 60 percent of Canada’s population — a convenient figure when one of the year’s more important LTE smartphones just became available less than two weeks prior.

[Thanks, Jon]

The Canadian Government Accidentally Ran a Bunch of Ads on the Pirate Bay [Piracy]

The Pirate Bay tends to be a website that national governments aren’t particularly fond of. That being the case, it’d be surprising if a national government ran ads on the site, advertising an Economic Action Plan, right? Canada did that, but not on purpose. More »
