HP 11 Chromebook Review

As I was about to publish my review about a month ago, the HP 11 Chromebook sale was put to an halt upon report of overheating charger. It was decided to wait until how this will affect the future of the device before putting the article online. At the core of the issue, there were “nine reports of chargers overheating and melting during use”. The recall affected 145,000 units. The charger was from a 3rd party, and not from HP, subcontracted by Google.

On the 12/17/2013, Google and HP officially started the charger recall/exchange program. In case the user did not follow the news, the ChromeOS was patched to notify the owner about the recall. A picture of the “new” and the “old” charger was displayed to the user to identify. There is an option to opt out. The charger would be sent first with a packing slip to return the recalled device.

That being said, I did not notice any overheating with the charger. I actually used it to replace my Samsung Note 3 charger. I would charge my note 3 at night and the HP chromebook during the day while I am out of the house. Using an infrared thermometer gun, the reading are; 68.4°F for the Pixel and 68.3°F for MBA and 109.6°F for the HP 11 charger, room temperature was 68.2°F. I am awaiting the replacement charger from Google and would update this review if needed.

The timing of this was very unfortunate for HP/Google. Although the charger issue was addressed, the Chromebook HP 11 is still showing as “out of stock” on the main vendors websites. Hopefully they will get back on the shelves, because, although the Chromebook HP 11 is not perfect, it is still a cutie. Let’s take a closer look. (more…)

Google And HP Recall HP Chromebook 11 Chargers

Google And HP Recall HP Chromebook 11 Chargers Recalls are no fun, and they definitely do not do any kind of justice or favors to the particular device in question, either. After all, who would want to purchase goods from a company that rolls out defective items in the future? Well, people do make some mistakes at times, and Google as well as HP happen to be the guilty party this time around with a recall of the HP Chromebook 11 chargers happening because the chargers have been deemed to be fire and burn hazards, running the risk of overheating and melting.

Apart from that, the recall also cites that “consumers should stop using this product unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.”. Approximately 145,000 units of the Chromebook 11 chargers were involved in this particular product recall, where it comes in black with outlet pins and measures 1.75” x 0.75”, accompanied by a half dozen foot long cord, and a micro-USB connector on the end. You will be able to find the model number of the charger as MU15-N1052-A00S which has already been stamped on the face of the battery charger which features the outlet pins. So far, nine reports were filed concerning overheating chargers and melting during use, with a single report of a small burn to a consumer, as well as a solitary report of minor property damage to a pillow because of an overheating charger. Basically any single report is one report too many.

    HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1

HP launched its new flagship business notebook the HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1. At 15.9 mm, it is the thinnest Ultrabook in the Elite portfolio, according to HP which claims that it is also 16.1 percent thinner and 7.3 percent lighter than the previous generation.

Although the 14-inch device is getting really thin, it still passes the MIL –Standard drop test (30-inch, 24 drops) and the MIL-STD 810G for battery durability. The EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 features the latest generation (4th gen) Intel Core processors with integrated graphics, and comes with a choice of HD or Full HD 1080p 14-inch display. The notebook is geared for business so it comes with the typical enterprise features such as finger print reader, TPM inside, SmartCard and dual authentication. HP ProDesk 600 and 800 Are Tiny Business Desktop PCs

HP ProDesk 600 and 800 Are Tiny Business Desktop PCsAlthough desktop PCs are not really the flavor of the month in terms of “wants” from employees, they remain one of the more cost-efficient compute methods. Since it’s hard to make those desktop PCs “sexy”, it looks like HP is trying to make them as invisible and cost-efficient as possible by introducing an updated ProDesk series. The 600 G1 pictured above is the smallest of them and can be connected to up to 3 displays, comes with SSD storage and more importantly the latest Intel vPro manageability.

For regular consumers, the $489 price tag of the 600 G1 (the 800 costs $669)may not seem to be such a great deal, but keep in mind that in the Enterprise space, it is really the computer management and maintenance that become very expensive over time. The remote management features often save a ton of time to the IT staff, which translate into shorter downtime to the employee using the computer. Also, HP typically promises to provide this exact configuration for a number of years, which allows the IT team to easily replace them with the exact same configuration if needed. This is something that is nearly impossible to do with off the shelf computers. The new ProDesk desktop computers will be available in April 2014, so this is quite an early announcement.

New HP Classmate Notebook PCHP has just announced that it will introduce a new Classmate PC Notebook, which is an “affordable” laptop for schools with a worldwide target audience in mind.  Of course, this computer has low-end specifications to make it affordable enough, but one of the more important aspects of a Classmate PC is that it comes with specific software like the Intel Educational Software suite. Those programs have been designed especially to be deployed in schools, and used by kids and is rather unique in its genre. To date, Intel says that 6M Classmate PCs have been shipped around the world. (more…)
