SteelSeries Stratus Wireless Gaming Controller for iOS7: No Touching

The first two iOS 7-compliant controllers extended the battery of your iPhone or iPod Touch. But they needed to connect to your device to work and were flat out incompatible with iPads. Enter SteelSeries with what seems to be the best iOS 7 controller yet, the Stratus Wireless Gaming Controller.

The Stratus connects to compatible iOS devices via Bluetooth 2.1. It lasts up to 10 hours per charge and has all the inputs you’d find on a console controller, including two analog sticks and four shoulder buttons.

The face buttons and shoulder buttons are even pressure-sensitive. That feature’s actual usefulness is up to game developers though. The controller does have a few drawbacks. First off, it’s tiny. That will be a good thing for some people, but if you have large hands the Stratus is going to be uncomfortable to use.

The image below shows the Stratus in the hands of Kotaku’s Mike Fahey. For the record, he says it “works quite well”, even though the shoulder buttons were too small for his taste.

Mike also mentioned that the controller cannot be used while it’s charging, which he claims can take up to 2 hours. Then there’s its somewhat limited compatibility. The Stratus will work only with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, 4th generation iPad, iPad Air and the 5th generation iPod Touch running iOS 7.

But perhaps the worst aspect of the controller is its price. SteelSeries has priced the Stratus at a whopping $100 (USD) for US customers and €100 for those in Europe. I guess I’ll just stare at Bastion’s icon for now.

Mophie Space Pack For iPhone Couples External Battery With Additional Storage

Mophie Space Pack For iPhone Couples External Battery With Additional Storage

[CES 2014] Some of us find it hard to make our smartphones last an entire day on a single charge. If you are constantly using data hungry applications, playing games, streaming content and taking a lot of pictures and videos, chances are your iPhone’s battery will die out faster than it would if you sparingly used the smartphone throughout the day. In such cases, removable batteries save the day, but the iPhone’s battery can’t be removed. Which is why there are a plethora of cases out there that come with external battery packs for the iPhone. Mophie makes such cases, and at CES 2014 it has announced the Space Pack for iPhone, a case that solves yet another dilemma.

Despite the fact that the latest iPhones can be purchased with onboard storage as high as 64GB, some find it to be insufficient. The alternative is to carry a portable wireless HDD which let you store and stream content on your mobile device. If you don’t want to carry around another piece of technology but would appreciate the additional storage, the Space Pack is for you. It not only promises to double the battery life of your iPhone, it also offers 16GB and 32GB of storage to extend that baked into the smartphone. Space Pack comes with an app called Space that allows you to organize local files without having to connect the iPhone to a computer. Mophie Space Pack is available for pre-order now, it costs $149.95 and $179.95 for the 16GB and 32GB models respectively.

Microsoft: iPhone Outsold By Windows Phone In 24 Markets

Microsoft: iPhone Outsold By Windows Phone In 24 MarketsNow, when you hear a particularly provocative statement such as the above, what kind of conclusion can you draw? For starters, does this mean that the iPhone is in big trouble, and Apple’s stock is going to slide on a downward spiral with no way of checking it in sight? Not really, and a whole lot of it depends on how you read the situation. Basically, everyone knows that Windows Phone has gained some grounds in the last year, especially with the entry level Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 521 handsets, while on the high end of the spectrum, there is the Nokia Lumia 1520.

Courtesy of the GDR3 update, Windows Phone OEMs are now able to construct a smartphone with equal specifications to the Android platform, which is good news. Not only that, Christopher Flores, director of communications for Microsoft, touts that Windows Phone happens to be the second most popular platform in 14 markets around the world, and in two dozen markets, it has started to outsell the iPhone. The thing is, we do not know which markets that Flores was referring to, although it is a no brainer that most of the growth happens to be heading its way from emerging markets as the iPhone has proven itself to be cost prohibitive.
