LG announces that all of its LCD TVs will be LED-based from now on (update)

LG announces its moving 100 percent to LEDs for its TVs, waves goodbye to Plasma

We’re here at LG’s CES 2013 press conference, where the company has just announced that it’s only going to be using LEDs for its LCD HDTVs from now on. The company will still be producing Plasma TVs, so don’t worry if you’re still wedded to the standard. At the same time, it’s also showing off its second-generation Cinema 3DTV design, that’s packing an even thinner bezel (if such a thing is possible).

Vizio unveils 2013 HDTV lineup, upcoming XVT Ultra HDTVs promise 4K for the mainstream

Vizio unveils 2013 HDTV lineup, upcoming XVT Ultra HDTVs promise 4K for the mainstream

Just as we expected, 4K TVs are all the rage here at CES 2013 and naturally Vizio won’t be left out. Among its 2013 lineup of LCD HDTVs is a new top of the line XVT-Series of Ultra HDTVs at 55-, 65- and 70-inches. The XVT551d, 651d and 701D don’t have much in the way of prices or release dates, but the company claims it will “bring the expensive new technology to mainstream consumers.” In the more accessible realm however are its M-Series displays, which will for the first time this year offer a universal backlit remote connected by WiFi Direct. Thanks to its connected remote, Vizio claims it will be able to control the entire home theater without the usual nagging setup process.

There are two M-Series lineups, the one with Theater 3D ranges in size from 50-inches to 80-inches, and in price from $849 to $4,499, while the models without max out at 47-inches and $699. Check below for a press release with all of the prices and specs plus a shot of that remote, although all we know about a release is that they’ll be arriving “later this year.”

HP unveils a slew of new IPS and LED monitors at CES 2013

Today things are officially off and running with CES 2013, and what better way to start some announcements from HP then with a host of new Windows 8 PC monitors. HP has a slew of 5 new monitor series. They’ll be featuring impressive LED, IPS, and ProDisplay monitors on the showroom floor this week, and we’ve got all the details so read on below to find out more.

heser

We’ll jump right in as they’ve just announced 5 different monitors this afternoon. The biggest of the bunch coming in at 27-inches is the new HP Envy 27 Monitor. This features a beautiful and vivid 27-inch IPS LCD panel with their thin blade bezel design. It’s also protected in edge-to-edge hardened glass for extra gloss and protection. It features built-in Beats Audio stereo speakers, and a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution. The new 27-inch IPS Envy 27 hits the streets February 3rd for around $499.

Next since we’re talking about IPS displays is their new HP Pavilion 20xi-27xi IPS monitors. While not covered in hardened glass like the model above, the xi series features a similar edge-to-edge bezel free design with their blade technology. They’ll come in 4 sizes: 22xi, 23xi, 25xi, and 27xi and all have 1920×1080 Full HD resolution options. You’ll then get support via VGA, DVI-D and HDMI connectivity, while a smaller 20xi offers 1600 X 900 resolution with VGA. The IPS panels ensure 178-degree viewing angles and excellent colors. The new Pavilion xi monitors start at $129 and go to $339 for the 27xi. All available around the end of January.

Then for those on the go HP’s announced their new HP U160 15.6-inch LED Backlit Monitor. This unique display features a built in stand that doubles as a carry case, and is ideal for those on the go needing a portable monitor. Weighing in around 3.4 lbs and measuring only 1.02 inches thin, this should be a great choice for many. It’s expected to be available in January starting at $179 USD.

Next up is the HP x2401 24-inch LED Backlit Monitor (pictured below and also at the head of this article). This is another high end Beats Audio powered monitor, only it is 24-inches and comes with an LED display instead of IPS — so won’t be priced as high as the 27-inch monitor above. The X2401 features an MVA panel, not IPS, but still gives excellent 178 degree viewing angles and extremely inky black colors. This monitor also rocks a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution 5000:1 contract ratio, and comes in a brushed aluminum finish. Oddly HP states it won’t be available until November, but will be priced at $249.

Then last but certainly not least is the new HP ProDisplay LED backlit line. These are more traditional monitors, and come in 18.5, 20, and 21.5-inch inch models. Respective names are P191 18.5-inch, P201 20-inch, P201m 20-inch, and P221 21.5-inch LED Backlit Monitors. These offer 250 nits brightness, 1000:1 contract, 3M:1 DCR, 5ms response time, and 170/160 viewing angles, so not quite IPS quality. These have the always welcomed 35-degrees of tilt adjustability and 90-degree pivot modes for multiple uses. I’d probably snag two P221′s and put them side by side. The new ProDisplay line will be priced at $129-179 based on size.

prodisplayfamily

Surely we can expect big things from HP here at CES, and we’ll be running around trying to get pictures and videos of all their latest and greatest. Stay tuned for plenty more from CES 2013.

Samsung reveals TV and audio accessories galore at CES 2013

Samsung knows there’s more to a home entertainment room than a big screen TV alone, and the company has a bevy of new A/V kit for CES 2013 including home theater systems, Blu-ray, and the wireless speakers. Those looking for the complete surround sound experience have the Samsung HT-F9750W Home Theater System to consider, offering 1,330W of 7.1-channel surround sound (and virtual 10.1-channel support thanks to the DTS-Neo Fusion codec “upscaling” from 5.1- or 7.1-channel source material). It uses a vacuum tube and digital amp combo for sound as well as a 4K scaler processor and de-blocking algorithm for video – running on a 900MHz dualcore – together with the same AllShare streaming support as Samsung’s Smart TV line-up over the integrated WiFi connection.

HT-F9750[1]

There are two HDMI inputs and Bluetooth, while the bundled speakers include two towers and a rear wireless unit. All get Ceramic Polypropylene Injection Diaphragm spacer cones, for what Samsung promises is an improvement in audio response times.

If that’s too big for you, the Samsung HW-F750 Soundbar also features a vacuum tube and digital amp comp, with 310W out of 2.1-channels and support for virtual surround sound. A wireless subwoofer keeps the bass end happy, and there’s 3D Sound Plus processing which matches the virtual surround sound depth with the depth of 3D images on-screen. Bluetooth streaming supports mobile devices and certain Samsung TVs.

Also toting Bluetooth is the Samsung DA-F60 Portable Wireless Speakers, using aptX for higher quality streaming (with compatible source devices, such as Samsung’s more recent smartphones) and NFC for easier pairing. It also supports streaming from select Samsung TVs.

DA-F60

While streaming from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Video on Demand, and other online sources has been built into Samsung’s Smart TVs for some time now, the company also has a new Blu-ray player for CES. The Samsung BD-F7500 can upscale to 4K resolution, and features integrated WiFi for AllShare streaming from mobile devices. It can also stream to a Samsung phone or tablet, thanks to Smart View support. Inside there are two 900MHz dualcore processors, and 7.1-channel analog audio outputs.

Samsung BD-F7500

The Samsung HT-F9750W Home Theater System, HW-F750 Soundbar, DA-F60 Wireless Speakers, and BD-F7500 Blu-ray player all will go on sale in the first half of 2013, with pricing to be confirmed.

Samsung Series 7 SC750 Display Flips Images on Their Ears

With CES 2013 just days away, more items from the show are beginning to surface. One of the many items you’ll find in Samsung’s booth will be this cool looking touchscreen display, which can rotate 90 degrees.

samsung sc750 series 7 display

Reminiscent of the clunky old Radius Pivot displays which could do the same thing, the Samsung Series 7 SC750 is designed specifically to offer images in either landscape or portrait modes. The ergonomic display also helps you get the screen up off the surface of your desk and to a better eye level when in landscape mode.

The display offers full 1920×1080 resolution, along with a 5000:1 contrast ratio, and a speedy 5ms refresh rate. The display has a modern brushed-metal stand, and a bright wide-viewing-angle LED backlight.

The SC750 will ship during Q1 of this year, but Samsung has yet to announce pricing.

Striker LED Light Mine Professional Won’t Blow You up But It Will Light You up

While I haven’t been around naval mines much, I have to say that this does look like a naval weapon of some kind. Thankfully, it’s not. It’s actually an intelligently-designed task light.

striker light mine

The Striker Magnetic LED Light Mine Professional is about the size of a baseball, and has 11 neodymium magnets on the spikes. Each of these will let you attach the light to a variety of surfaces. In the middle are 12 Lumen Tech LEDs that provide plenty of light, using one of four different modes. There’s a low-power spotlight, high-power floodlight, a red light for nighttime visibility and a high-visibility signal beacon.

It sounds like it’s something quite useful to have in your Bug-out bag, in case of the upcoming zombie apocalypse. The Striker Light Mine Professional sell for about $18(USD) each over on Amazon.

dreamGEAR i.Sound Glow Bluetooth Speaker Turns Your iPhone into a Discotheque

I just bought myself a bunch of those cool Philips Hue wireless lightbulbs, so I can now see the appeal of adding colored lights to a room to set the mood. But if you’re looking for more of a disco feeling rather than just solid colors, you might want to check out this new Bluetooth speaker coming from dreamGEAR.

isound glow

While it borrows its name from a dated old iPod nano dock, the upcoming i.Sound Glow Sound Bluetooth Speaker is a horse of several different colors. For starters, it’s a wireless audio speaker that works with smartphones, tablets and MP3 players. It can be connected via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm audio jack and music plays through its pair of full-range speakers. But what really sets it apart are the six glowing LED orbs on its face which can be set to automatically change color to go with your tunes. You’ll also be able to set the orbs to cycle through pre-programmed color patterns if you’d prefer.

Pricing and a release date for the i.Sound Glow Sound Bluetooth Speaker haven’t been announced yet, but dreamGEAR will likely be showing it at CES from January 8 to 11, 2013.

DIY Doctor Who Crack in the Wall Could Destabilize Space and Time

Remember that season of Doctor Who when there was a crack in Amy Pond’s wall? Well, now you can have a crack in your wall that looks just like it. Let’s just hope it doesn’t cause the universe to explode. Or implode. Whatever.
crack in time
This Crack in the Wall is a custom made, battery powered LED array, set into a metal frame. It’s not only a cool modern design, but it makes for a stylish way to illuminate your wall, while keeping things true to Who.

If you want to try and build one for yourself, there are a few pictures here that might help you create one like it. Just make sure that you do it right. I don’t want to be erased from history because of your shoddy craftsmanship.

LG details LCD, plasma HDTV lineup for 2013: 4K, Miracast, NFC, WiDi and more

LG's details LCD, plasma HDTV lineup features for 2013 4K, Miracast, NFC, WiDi, and more

As LG continues its slew of CES pre-announcements, it’s revealed details about the new HDTVs it will be showing off in Las Vegas next week. Predictably, they include three lines of plasma models (fewer than previous years, but still kicking) in 42- to 60-inch sizes, and new LCD HDTVs in various levels of trim and sizes from 22-inches up to 60-inches. Most notably, this year all of its new LCDs are LED, as it’s kicked the old CCFL tech to the curb. LG has already detailed upcoming changes for its voice/gesture Magic Remote control and a couple of Google TV models, however other new features for 2013 include an “On Now” recommendation system that learns what you watch and offers relevant selections from live TV and video on-demand services. Expect new tie-ins to be announced with both streaming and local TV providers to help fill out the selection around the world.

Hardware-wise, new feature boxes checked this year include NFC, thanks to a new “Tag On” sticker smartphones and other devices can easily pair with. Getting content from mobile devices to the display will also be easier thanks to Miracast and WiDi support, and MHL ports will be readily available as well. LG’s FPR 3D tech isn’t going anywhere, and Smart TV features should be speedier than ever thanks to CPUs with a promised 120 percent speed boost, and 300 percent faster GPUs. As seen in the pics, the design has also been altered slightly with a new stand that both swivels and rolls, plus a reduced bezel size.

If you’re looking for the latest and greatest however, LG will be showing off the 84-inch Ultra HD 4K set it just started shipping and the 55-inch OLED display we’re waiting for. No word yet on shipping dates or price for any of the new models, but as we surmised from LG Display’s plans, we should see a couple of 55- and 65-inch Ultra HD TVs appear before the year is out. There’s a couple more pictures of the new HDTVs in the gallery plus a press release with all the details after the break. Beyond that, HD Guru has a model-by-model breakdown of the available information — we’ll check back with our in-person impressions in a few days.

Xbox 360 Bullet Buttons Get Lit up

I’ve already swapped out the buttons on one of my Xbox 360 controllerswith some bullet buttons, and they look cool. But now I’m really jealous because somebody is now selling a bullet button mod that actually lights up. Sweet.

led bullet mod xbox controller 1

DeadEye Modz takes actual 9mm brass bullet casings, drills out the centers, and mounts colored LEDs inside of them so you know which button is which by color, not just by touch like with other bullet mods. The installation process is pretty straightforward, but unlike other button mods, you’ll need basic soldering skills to attach the LEDs and resistors to the board to provide power. Instructions are provided, so if you’re reasonably handy, it shouldn’t be a big deal.

There’s also a matching, light-up Xbox Guide button – made from a shotgun shell – and available in a variety of LED colors of your choice.

A full set of LED bullet buttons is $20.99(USD) over on Etsy. The shotgun shell guide button sells for $12.99. And if you’ve got lots of money to burn and don’t feel like modding your own controller, you can always go for this fully-pimped-out customized controller for $259.99:
