Zoe, the Custom Astromech Droid Gives R2-D2 Some Serious Competition

Don’t get me wrong, I love R2-D2, but Podpadstudios‘ Astromech droid is plain beautiful. Just look at the detail and all of those lights. Her name is R11:E1, a.k.a. Zoe. Her creator named her after Zoe from Caprica, which also warms my cold dead heart.
R11 E1
She’s not just all show. The ‘bot is powered by three 25Amp 12v SLA batteries, two running the 24v drive system and the third running the 12v electrics. Zoe has many gadgets onboard and built-in, including a router and IP webcam which broadcasts at charity events.

She’s got an on-board sound system, a fire extinguisher, working utility arms and claws, a 140db siren, working holo-eyes, periscope, a smoke machine ported through exhaust, lots of LED and el-wire, with light reactive paint, and a full working on-board DLP projector setup to display Princess Leia’s message from Star Wars. Holy crap! How did they get all of that in there?

Now THIS is the droid I have been looking for!

Star Wars LEGO Mosaics: The Real LEGO Star Wars

Technabob readers love LEGO and they also love Star Wars. So whenever the two worlds intersect, it’s geeky bliss. I’m especially impressed with these handmade LEGO Star Wars mosaics by UK artist Douglas Bagnall.

Each of his LEGO mosaics is made using thousands of individual 1×1 pixel blocks to create the image. The R2-D2 mosaic measures 30″x40″ and the stormtrooper is 30″x30″. Based on the 5/16″ square size of a single LEGO brick, that means that R2-D2 was made out of 12,288 bricks, and the stormtrooper was made from 9,216 bricks. Holy crap, that’s a lot of LEGO  – assuming my math is correct.

They’re certainly not inexpensive, with R2-D2 selling for £1,840.00 (~$3019 USD) and the stormtrooper going for £1,380.00 (~$2265 USD.) But when you think of all the work that went into making them, it softens the blow a little bit.

R2-D2 Scooter Rides for Princess Vespa not Leia

If you’re waiting for me to say something about “This is the scooter you’re looking for,” don’t. I’m doing my darnedest not to use that overused droid meme ever again.

This R2-D2 Vespa scooter was made by Geekologie reader Morgan, and it’s every bit as awesome as a scooter can get. Though I doubt the headlight can project a hologram of a princess in need. But that’d be pretty cool if it did.

The fifth grade teacher/Star Wars fan says he put together the bike using “adhesive vinyl, some meticulous cutting and a 12-pack of beer.” I’m not sure where the beer went, since I thought that Bender was the only robot who had a drinking problem. Beyond the R2-D2 styling, my favorite touch is the suitcase on back, covered with travel stickers from a galaxy far, far away.

Great job, Morgan. Just don’t try and ride this R2-D2 into the Dagobah swamp.

Star Wars R2-D2 NES console is truly in a galaxy of its own

There are case mods, and then there are case mods. What you see in the video above is truly one of the more outstanding case mods where the humble NES is concerned, taking the cult movie favorite R2-D2 from the Star Wars space opera and turning it into a moving console of sorts. Custom built by Mark Bongo of Major League Mods, this little astromech droid that could comes with the original NES console fitted within itself, where there is a cartridge slot located at the back alongside the power plug, audio and video plugs. In front, you will find the power and reset buttons which will respond in R2-D2′s now famous beeps and boops when pressed. You are also able to enjoy blue LED accents located along the bottom, not to mention the customized R2-D2-themed controller, red and blue buttons, and all that. Definitely one of the cooler case mods we have seen for an old school console, and C3PO does not seem to get much love at all.

R2-D2 Talking Plush Ball: Spaceballs: The Ball

From the day that Star Wars came out, I always thought R2-D2 looked like a trashcan on wheels. So an R2-D2 trashcan makes sense as a mechandising tie-in. On the other hand, I never really pictured R2 as an orb. But that didn’t stop Underground Toys from making him into one.

This literal oddball features what looks like the unholy spawn of R2-D2 and Wheatley, with its googly cyclops eye staring back at you. This plush R2-D2 ball even “talks” – whatever that means. I’m guessing that it just beeps like this guy, since the little maintenance droid never uttered an word of English in its life.

If you’re ready to play with your balls, then head on over to BigBadToyStore now, where you can pre-order the R2-D2 Talking Plush Ball for $19.99(USD), where you can also find plush ball versions of Yoda, Chewie and the Dark Lord himself.

R2-D2 Costume Hoodie: Help Me Obi Wan Kenobi, You’re My Only Coat

Kids don’t want to be Luke Skywalker or Ben Kenobi or even handsome scoundrel Han Solo. Kids really want to be R2-D2. R2 is the man! Well, the ‘bot! Now you can turn your entire upper body into the Astromech droid with this excellent R2-D2 hoodie.

It’s up to you to do the sound effects. And it will be so amazing rolling through your neighborhood looking like R2. Until Jawas spot you and shoot you with a stun gun. It’s all downhill from there.

Just zip this bad boy up and just like that, you are a droid. This hoodie is 60% cotton, 40% polyester and 100% awesome. It will cost you $69.99(USD) from Superherostuff. If you try real hard, maybe you can project a hologram from your eyeball.

Officially-Licensed R2-D2 Skin-Tight Dresses Give You the License to Dress to Kill

If you love clothes and happen to a fan of geeky stuff like Star Wars, then I’m pretty sure you’ve already heard of Black Milk Clothing by now. They’re behind the uber-sexy TARDIS mini dress and leggings and a series of awesome geeky swimsuits featuring C-3PO, Pac-Man, and R2-D2.

Their latest offering is a mini dress featuring none other than R2-D2. So if you’ve already got the swimsuit, then you’ll probably want a matching dress to go with it. Not that you’ll be wearing both of them at the same time, but, well, you get the point.

The dress is officially-licensed by Lucasfilm and is made from 82% polyester and 18% Lycra. It also happens to be one of those bodycon dresses that’s already an outfit in itself. Just pull it on, put your shoes on, and don’t worry about accessorizing because the dress already does all the work for you.

This is just one of Black Milk’s Star Wars-themed offerings this season. You can check out the video below for more from their range.

R2-D2 Action Alarm Clock: Wake Me Obi Wan Kenobi, You’re My Only Hope

In this world of Star Wars inspired gadgets, sometimes the same device gets rehashed. Yes, we’ve seen an R2-D2 alarm clock before, but that model simply projected the time on the ceiling. This new one actually has movements and sounds like the little droid when it wakes you.

r2 dw action alarm clock

A recent import from Japan, this R2-D2 Action Alarm clock is a precisely-detailed model of R2 (other than the part where there’s an LCD clock hiding out in his chest.) What’s cool about this droid is that you can set him on the floor, and he’ll drive around when the alarm goes off. His head even lights up, and the alarm sounds are based on samples from the films. Just be sure not to step on the 6.5 inch-tall droid on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

r2 d2 action alarm clock 3

You can choose wake-up sounds from Princess Leia’s “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi” message, several R2-D2 beeps and bleeps, as well as the main title music from Star Wars and Cantina Band if you feel like dancing first thing in the morning. Sorry, no Yub Nub, though.

So scoot on over to Strapya World now, where you can grab the R2-D2 Action Alarm Clock for about $100(USD).

Epic Star Wars Cake is Epic

Sometimes you can’t just pick one favorite character from the Star Wars movies. Who says you have to? At least that’s the idea that one baker had when creating what could be the most awesome Star Wars cake ever. Ok, it’s not as incredibly crafted as the full-size Stormtrooper and Darth Vader cakes, but it’s still pretty great.

star wars mashup cake

This single cake combines Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and Yoda into a single, epic cake masterpiece. Nobody seems to know who made this amazing cake, but whoever you are, I bend the knee to you. The only thing missing are Boba Fett and Stormtrooper layers but I suppose you could always pick those up here.

R2-D2 luggage by Salvador Bachiller

This might not be the droid that you are looking for, but it definitely is the luggage that you have been waiting all your life – ever since R2-D2 made its appearance back in the 1970s with the debut of Star Wars, enthralling the imagination of geeks and non-geeks worldwide in a grand space opera conjured by a very young George Lucas back then. Since then, we have seen our fair share of R2-D2 incarnations which appeal to the geek demographic, but Salvador Bachiller might be on to a winner here with his €95 R2-D2 luggage that has rollers at the bottom so that you can drag it along the next time you step into your Imperial Shuttle, er, Airbus A380.

Of course, it would be cooler if the relevant electronics that are smart enough could be incorporated into the R2-D2 luggage here, allowing it to follow you around like the tootin’ astromech droid that it was in the movies. Still, I am quite sure that hard core Star Wars fans would find this particular R2-D2 luggage a must buy, never mind what the missus has to say about it.
