Withings was one of a pretty busy section of the CES 2013 show floor demoing health, fitness and lifestyle monitoring apps, and it had a couple of new things to add to its line of Wi-Fi scales and monitoring devices. One was the new Withings Smart Body Analyzer, which is a version of its Wi-Fi scale that, for the first time, measures heart rate. The other was the Smart Activity Tracker, a FitBit-style device for keeping track of your activity.

The Withings Smart Body Analyzer will be hitting stores in Q1 2013 and retails for $149.95. It does weight and body fat readings like the existing versions and beams all that info either over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to its companion app for iOS or Android. The scale can also detect air quality and is intended to be used in a bedroom so that you can check its readings to figure out when you need to open a window to increase air flow.

The Withings Smart Activity Tracker is like the Jawbone Up, FitBit One, etc. It’s tiny, and it’s hard to convey just how small in words, but you can check it out in the video for a better idea. Besides being incredibly small, which is a big advantage for a device you have to wear constantly, it also connects to your iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth, has an on-device display, and can send you alerts.

It’s never good when your bathroom scale gives you inconsistent readings. That’s probably one of the reasons why people seem to like these new high-tech scales that can track your weight history via your smartphone. There aren’t too many available on the market yet, so it’s good to see more alternatives popping up like this one from Wahoo Fitness.

The Wahoo Balance Smartphone Scale is powered by Bluetooth, and it allows you to track your weight and BMI over time. It will send your weigh-ins directly to your iPhone or iPad via a free app. The scale itself can manage up to 16 different users and it can hold up to 130 weight readings. Keep in mind that it only works with the Phone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (5th generation), iPad (3rd and 4th generations), and iPad Mini – presumably because it’s using Bluetooth 4 tech.

The scale is available for pre-order now for $99(USD). Orders will start shipping in the first week of December, so they could make a nice gift idea – assuming the recipient doesn’t think you’re trying to send them a message about their weight.

There’s nothing quite like charting out your progress, right?

Say you want to watch a TV program or a video of a recipe while you cook? While you could always bring your smartphone or tablet into the kitchen, there’s always a chance you’ll get it wet or get food stuck on or inside of it. This unique scale not only can weigh your food, but it’s got a 4.3″ (480×272) LCD screen and a media player built into its surface. It’s also got a speaker for the audio portion. The scale can play back media in .AVI, MPEG 1/2/4, or DiVX formats or stills in .JPG format. The scale itself isn’t waterproof, but most digital kitchen scales shouldn’t be submerged anyhow. Its also got a built-in rechargeable battery and can be juiced up via its Mini USB port. A 2 to 3 hour charge should give you about 2 hours of video playback – plenty for most meals I’ve ever cooked.

Too bad I can’t have one of these on hand in time to cook for Thanksgiving this week, but I doubt I could get it shipped all the way from Japan or China by then.

We did take a look at the Withings wireless scale in the past, and needless to say, living a wireless lifestyle is always worth looking into. Not only that, as a user, you are able to decide just where else you would want such information to be sent to – including your physician, Twitter feed, and over 60 Withings compatible applications such as Lose It!, Runkeeper, MyFirnessPal, Daily Burn, Zeo, and Body Media.
