Sony Xperia J possibly spotted, may court entrylevel fashionistas

That didn’t take long. We’ve only known about the Sony Xperia J and its reported ST26i codename for a short while, but ePrice has already given the purported starter smartphone the full photo tour. From cursory looks and specifications, the J will slot neatly between the Xperia miro and tipo at the start of the line and the small but potent Xperia U: while it’s not believed to be quite as fast or iconic as the dual-core U, the single-core, 1GHz J could still be faster than its tiniest cousins and strive for some chic with a brightly colored back wrapped around a 4-inch display. The real highlight may simply be an Xperia that ships with Android 4.0 from the get-go instead of requiring yet another upgrade merry-go-round. When the Xperia J shows is still up in the air, despite presumptions of an appearance at IFA; however, we won’t be surprised if the J appears side-by-side with the Mint when it’s officially ready for a close-up.

Sony LT30p “Mint” breaks cover, gets early review

Sony is planning to unveil some new handsets on August 29th before IFA kicks off in Berlin, and it looks like one of those has been detailed well ahead of the event. Mobile-Review has gotten its hands on the Sony LT30p, aka the Mint. In addition to the full specs, there are a bevy of pictures of the device from every angle, plus lots of screenshots of Sony’s user interface on top of Ice Cream Sandwich, which includes some new software tweaks.

The Sony Sony LT30p features a 4.3-inch screen with a 720p resolution, a 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, microSD card slot, microUSB capable of MHL output, microSIM slot, NFC, and a sealed internal battery. The star of the show is the 13-megapixel camera, also capable of 1080p video recording. A front-facing camera capable of 720p can also be found on the device. Mobile-Review indicates the screen is 4.3-inches, but as you can see below, it’s not far off the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III – the handset may be closer to 4.6-inches.

Mobile-Review notes that the hardware is smaller than the Xperia S, allowing for easier one-handed usage, but the most important change is that the phone uses the Ice Cream Sandwich onscreen navigation keys and ditches the physical buttons of the NXT range altogether. Still, other hardware buttons have been placed in a strange place: the power, volume rocker, and camera shutter buttons are all located on the bottom right hand side of the phone.

Software changes, meanwhile, include Small Apps, allowing you quick access to certain application from your homescreens. Mobile-Review provides screenshots of one example, a recording application that can be activated with just one tap. Other apps will reportedly be available for download from the Play Store, but as the phone hasn’t launched yet there aren’t any additional Small Apps. The site has also benchmarked the phone against heavyweights such as the HTC One S and Galaxy S III. It comes up a little short despite running the same Snapdragon S4 processor, but the software most likely hasn’t been finalized yet.

If you want the full details on the phone, head on over to Mobile-Review and take a peek. There’s a ton of screenshots for you to pour over, plus some additional benchmark comparisons.

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core tops the benchmark charts [Hands-on]

Qualcomm‘s been hard at work with their new quad-core chipset for mobile devices, and we’ve got one in our hands. Their brand new Snapdragon APQ8064 S4 Pro SoC packs quite the punch and we’ve just started taking it through it’s paces. Announced and available starting earlier today, this developer device isn’t for average users, but is a clear indication of what we can expect from Qualcomm later this year.

Without getting too technical here the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 developer tablet kit contains a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and is running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. This 10.1-inch display running a 1366 x 768 resolution is going to be put through its paces but for now here’s a quick glance at a few of the popular Android benchmark apps. Quadrant blew through the roof posting numbers nearing 8000, and AnTuTu clearly was ahead of the other quad-core options available today.

Being a developer based platform this tablet isn’t something any consumer will see, but we’ll still give a quick input on performance. Usual tasks such as browsing the web, scrolling through webpages, heading to the Google Play Store and more are all extremely buttery smooth. Android 4.0 ICS is on board, instead of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but performance is still quite swift.

With popular tests such as Quadrant and AnTuTu we clearly see some extremely impressive results. Boasting nearly 8k in Quadrant was plenty exciting, considering most devices are lucky to break 5000 — those of which are all running Qualdcomm’s dual-core S4 processor. Anything older isn’t quite as lucky, and that includes some other quad-core options on the market. Vellamo, Qualcomm’s own in-house benchmark suite that focuses on web browsing also takes charge and scores well with their new quad-core. Results aren’t as chart topping as the others, but certainly shows some real progress.

While this is just a MDP device geared at developers, it’s already clearly beating the Nexus 7, and Samsung’s Exynos 4 Quad powered Galaxy S III easily. These devices don’t give us an idea of battery life so that is still up in the air, but Qualcomm promises “all-day battery life.” For now take a quick glance at the results below. We’ll continue to update with additional screenshots and more tests, but Qualcomm has another winner here to top the charts. We can expect to see the new S4 pro quad-core arriving in devices later this year.

SnapDragon S4 Pro Devkit Preview + Benchmarks

We’re attending a Qualcomm event in which we had the opportunity to get our hands on the quad-core SnapDragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) development platform. If you’re not familiar with the new chip, the stated goal of Qualcomm is to come up with a high-performance “all-day” mobile computing platform. To increase the speed, Qualcomm is using a quad-core architecture and a new Adreno 320 graphics processor – all in the same chip die.

The tablet itself has pretty much everything that the platform can support: stereo surround sound, multiple microphones, all the sensors that we may expect, including pressure, temperature and fingerprint reader. There is 1GB of RAM and 16GB of local storage (+ microSD slot). The development tablet has just launched and is available from BSquare, the company that usually manufacture the development kits for Qualcomm ($1299). Although this is a quality product, it is not meant as a “sexy” consumer device – it’s really a hardware that is meant to mostly sit on a developer desk, so don’t assume that actual products will look like this.

Lenovo IdeaTab S2110 quietly goes on sale as the Gobots of transforming tablets

Lenovo IdeaTab S2110 hybrid tablet

Lenovo’s 10-inch IdeaTab S2 was one of the belles of its CES ball in offering a distinctly Transformer Pad-like experience for those not beholden to ASUS’ view of the world. While there wasn’t much attention given to the Android 4.0 tablet outside of the FCC filing we saw last month, it’s getting its time to shine at last: the device is now sitting on Lenovo’s virtual shelves as the S2110. The 10.1-inch slate’s selling point remains its (strictly optional) keyboard dock, which supplies a trackpad, an SD slot, USB and 10 extra hours of battery life to keep that movie marathon going. Even if you have no intention of constructing the Gobot to ASUS’ Transformer original, though, the S2110 is still a big leap over the so-so S2109 from the spring. A 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon APQ8060A, a rear 5-megapixel camera and a landscape 1,280 x 800 screen are all incentives to pay the premium over the S2110’s budget predecessor. Not that there will be much of a premium to pay — despite setting a $449 official price, Lenovo is already discounting the S2110 to as little as $343. That’s low enough to lure the cost-conscious away from the Transformer Pad elephant in the room, even if it reminds us of relatives that always bought us the cheaper robot toys when we were kids.

Samsung Jasper for Verizon leaks on Twitter, dual-core Snapdragon and ICS in tow

Samsung Jasper for Verizon leaks on Twitter, dualcore Snapdragon and ICS in tow

Such is the natural order of things. First the blurrycam, then the FCC sighting (albeit the Sprint version) and if you’re lucky, a final juicy leak. This is the story of the Samsung Jasper for Verizon. Details of the mid-range chin-heavy phone just showed up on Twitter, and claim the device will have a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon MSM8960 processor, a mediocre 800 x 480 display and Android 4.0. The skinning looks lighter than some other Samsung attempts, and the buttons along the bottom are also a deviation from other recent big hitters. While the DNA all seems a bit familiar, it seems Verizon will finally have a version to call its own.

Qualcomm Q3 2012 earnings show revenue ($4.63b) and profit ($1.21b) up sharply over last year

Qualcomm is reporting its financial numbers for the last quarter and has been the trend, it’s a good time to be everywhere in the wireless business. Continued strong demand for 3G and 4G-connected hardware is keeping sales high, driving “strong year-over-year growth” according to CEO Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, contributing to a bottom line of $4.63 billion in revenue and net income of $1.21 billion. The company’s MSM (mobile station modem) chipsets continue to be the main contributor with 141 million units sold, also up yearly by 18 percent but down 7 percent from Q2, with reported device sales following the same pattern at $47.8 billion.

About that slight drop from last quarter, the Doctor continues by saying the company expects demand to be back-loaded as “new devices” are launched for the holiday season. With that in mind, it’s ramping up production for 28nm Snapdragon S4 chipsets, a move that reportedly has required help from Samsung and UMC. With the next iPhone, new Android Jelly Bean hardware, Windows Phone 8 / Windows 8 devices and much more expected to arrive soon, we’ll keep the old money-flying-at-Qualcomm’s-HQ graphic close by. For more details, hit the source link for the PDF or read the press release after the break.

Mystery HTC device flaunts class-leading benchmarks, 1080p display

Mystery HTC device flaunts classleading benchmarks, 1080p display

When we say “mystery,” we totally mean it. We don’t know if this is a phone or a tablet, or even if it’s real — stranger things have happened that concocted benchmarks. All we can say for sure is that a previously unheard-of device called the HTC 6435LVW has appeared over at the Community Uploads section of the GLBenchmark site, scoring a ridiculous 121 FPS in the Egypt Offscreen 720p test — that’s more than twice the score of the HTC One X (LTE), and 20 percent higher than the current performance supremo, the Galaxy S III. But that’s not all, because the benchmark listing also throws up some specs: notably a 1794 x 1080 resolution (could that mean a new HTC tablet with onscreen buttons?) and a Qualcomm MSM8960 processor (could it be the Pro version?). There are too many questions to contemplate, but here’s one final detail: the Android ICS version is described as a Verizon build, so if this thing is legit maybe that’s where it’s headed.

LG VS930 for Verizon leaks

Just a few days ago we heard rumblings that LG was planning another high-end smartphone that would feature a quad-core processor and 10-megapixel camera, and now it looks like the company is about to release another LTE handset on Verizon. Engadget has scored pictures and specs for the VS930. It looks quite similar to the LG Optimus LTE II, and the specs are certainly nothing to sneeze at.

The phone will reportedly come with a 4.7-inch screen with a 720p IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, NFC, and global radio support on top of Verizon’s LTE. The phone will also come with an 8-megapixel camera, and come in at 9.2mm thick.

A leaked service manual for the phone indicates that it will be running Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, have a 2,150mAh battery, and that it may possibly be released very shortly on July 13th. Feast your eyes on the service manual in the meantime, and we’ll bring you the official announcement if the handset does indeed drop on the 13th.

Optimus LTE II makes a cameo on Verizon as LG VS930 (Updated)

Optimus LTE II makes a cameo on Verizon as LG VS930

Oh hello there, LG VS930. This handset — which was caught in the wild by Mr. Blurrycam’s cousin, Ms. Quickiecam — looks an awful lot like an Optimus LTE II for Verizon. This makes even more sense when you consider that its predecessor, the VS920 aka. Spectrum, recently received end-of-life status. According to the anonymous tipster who sent us these pictures, the phone will ship with the following features:

  • Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 SoC
  • 4.7-inch “True HD IPS” display (1280 x 720 pixels)
  • 16GB of built-in storage
  • Global radio support (GSM/UMTS/CDMA/LTE)
  • NFC (it comes with programmable tags)

There’s no word on whether the VS930 will inherit the Optimus LTE II’s 2GB of RAM [see update below] or the VS920’s branding — Spectrum 2 perhaps? We’ll keep you posted when we find out more, like pricing and availability. In the meantime, take a look at the gallery below for some closer shots.

Update: More information is coming to light about the VS930, including a possible July 13th launch and the service manual (PDF link), which contains a ton of photos and information. The 9.2mm (0.36-inches) thick handset features 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel autofocus camera.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]
