Kindle for Android update brings Kindle Fire-like design

Amazon has outed an updated for its Kindle app on Android, most notably bringing with it a new design and UI overhaul that mirrors the user interface of the company’s Kindle Fire tablet. The updated app includes a redesigned home screen, an improved Kindle Store layout for Android tablets, and navigation changes.

The update also incudes a section in the sidebar meant for users who are new to the Kindle platform. This section is called Popular Samples, in which users can browse a number of free samples of books to read, to get them acquainted with the Kindle app, as well as find interesting books that they might like.

The new tablet interface has definitely changed according to our experience, and the home screen features the same Cover Flow-esque navigation that’s on the Kindle Fire, allowing you to swipe through different books, newspapers, and magazines. The sidebar also gives you quick access to other sections of the app, including the Kindle Store and the aforementioned Samples.

The app also comes with a slew of the usual bugfixes and general performance enhancements that we see in every app update, so if you’re not a big fan of the new design, you’ll at least have a more rounded-out app that’s a bit quicker and snappier than before. The update is available now in the Google Play store.

Twitter for Mac update brings Retina support, improved sharing and uploading

Twitter has updated its Mac app with several improvements that users can take advantage of now. The app has been updated to include support for Retina displays on the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros, and users will be greeted with improved photo sharing and uploading features, as well as support for 14 more languages.

With Retina support, the updated Twitter app will be able to take advantage of the added pixels, and Twitter claims that the whole app will appear sharper and crisper on high-resolution displays. Twitter also made it easier to share photos. You can either drag-and-drop photos into the app, or click the new camera icon in the corner and browse for a photo to add.

Twitter says that “more improvements” will be coming in the future, which we would hope so, given the fact that Twitter’s client restriction are resulting in numerous third-party Twitter clients to shut their doors, most notably TweetDeck, which is set to close down on May 7 due to the restriction of the number of users that third-party clients can have.

TweetDeck is only one of the beloved Twitter clients seeing its end, which not seem like a huge deal since Twitter has their own apps to use, but the company has been surprisingly lacking in their offerings, with many third-party clients out-performing Twitter itself with unique features that you can’t get with official Twitter apps.

Tumblr for iOS update brings Facebook, Twitter integration

Tumblr has been out like mad working on its mobile prowess over the past few days. After releasing a dedicated app for Windows Phone 8 yesterday, they’re back again with an update to their iOS app. Tumblr has added support for sharing blog posts to Facebook and Twitter, complete with third-party app support for apps like Tweetbot.

The updated app also includes the ability to save blog posts for later using read-it-later services like Instapaper and Pocket. Users can also email blog posts to friends and family using Tumblr’s all-new template. There’s also some new navigation tweaks, like swiping up or down to close photos, as well as added support for animated GIFs on the dashboard.

Overall, it’s not a huge update, but avid Tumblr users who take advantage of the app while on the go will appreciate some of the new features, especially if they’re all about sharing blog posts with friends. However, users will begin to be bombarded with mobile ads, so be prepared to see sponsored content show up in your feed.

The Tumblr apps for Android and Windows Phone 8 already allow for easy sharing of blog posts, but iOS users are now honored with the feature. Tumblr released a dedicated app for Windows Phone 8 yesterday, bringing lock screen and live tile support along with it, giving Tumblr users on Microsoft’s mobile platform a unique experience unlike iOS or Android.

Yahoo iOS app adds Summly content curation

Yahoo has updated its iPhone app today, which most notably integrates a new Yahoo feature known as Summaries, which comes from the fruits of the labor of a 17-year-old app developer who released news summary app called Summly back in November last year. Yahoo bought the app for $30 million, and have integrated the app’s features in their updated app.

yahoo

The new app takes after Yahoo’s recently-launched Weather app for the iPhone, which features a beautiful, modern-looking user interface. The Yahoo app allows you to scroll through news items, with the article’s image appearing as the background, and a short summary to give you the gist of a long-form news article.

If you log in with your Yahoo ID, you’ll get more personalized results, allowing you to read only the things that you’re interested in. The app also comes with an improved search engine that provides better video and image search results. Overall, the app has received a major overhaul over what it used to be, and it looks great.

The app is only available for iPhone, however — just like their Weather app, but it’s possible we may updated Yahoo apps make their way to iPad eventually. The app is also only available in the US, so international users are out of luck for now. However, the company said it’s looking to expand its Summly technology further, so we could see the app expand to other platforms and regions soon.

SimCity getting first major update on April 22

After the whole fiasco with the release of SimCity earlier this year, it seems that things have finally settled, and players are now able to build their cities in peace. However, there’s going to be another server shutdown come Monday, but only to make room for the game’s first major update, which is set to hit April 22.

simcity-580x32512

Electronic Arts has announced that the update will hit on Monday starting at 1 pm PT and will bring the game to version 2.0. It contains “a number of top-requested bug fixes and improvements,” but the publisher was kind enough to provide a massive list of everything that will be provided in the update.

Some of the more important updates address issues with tourists, delays in receiving invitations, and phantom audio problems. It will also provide color-corrects when in a colorblind mode in the HUD, and data maps will show the filtered color when a color filter is enabled, unless you’re in a colorblind mode.

Other than that, casinos will be more profitable, and there will be a slew of fixes to the game’s budget-based systems, including fire, garbage, and sewage. Public transit will also see a number of improvements, including a fix for that annoying infinite loop problem that some players have been experiencing.

Evernote Skitch for Mac and iOS updates with PDF annotations and stamps

Evernote has updated its popular screenshot and feedback tool Skitch today with some pretty nifty features catered towards those who like to mess around with PDFs. The app now comes with the ability to annotate PDFs, as well as use “stamps,” which are essentially small symbols that you can place in a PDF to tell a collaborator whether something gets the thumbs up or thumbs down.

Stamps1

You can import single or multi-page PDFs into Skitch, and then you can annotate them with different shapes, arrows, and of course text. This allows you to point out items that need to be changed or want to give special attention to. You can also use the Highlighter tool to draw attention to a specific section of text or imagery.

The new stamps feature includes five stamps. There’s a red “X” stamp for bringing attention to things that need changed, an exclamation mark to draw attention to something that possibly needs attention, a question mark for items that may be confusing, a green checkmark to give the all clear, and a heart stamp for marking something that is excellent and shouldn’t be changed.

Once you place a stamp, you can add text next to the stamp to elaborate on your change that you want made. These features are actually only available to premium Evernote users, but the company is offering a 30-day free period where anyone can use these new features. The update is available now in the Mac App Store as well as in iTunes.

Nintendo Wii U update coming next week

We knew an update to the Wii U would be coming at some point this month, but Nintendo has finally announced that we should be seeing the update land sometime next week. The update will fix slow load times that have plagued Wii U consoles lately, and it’ll also bring background downloads as well as Virtual Console.

wii-u

Ever since the console officially launched back in November, gamers have been complaining about glacially slow load times with games, and overall sluggish performance. However, Nintendo has promised that a major update would fix the problems, and hopefully it does, because if it doesn’t, Nintendo will have so serious explaining to do.

Nintendo will also be adding background downloads to ease the inconvenience of downloading full retail games. The new system tweaks in the update will allow gamers to not only download games while they’re in-game, but also when the console is turned off, which will no doubt put a smile on digital downloaders’ faces.

As for the Wii U Virtual Console, that will be included with the major update next week, and it will allow you to play your favorite classic games from older consoles like the GameBoy Advance and Nintendo 64. These games will be playable on the Wii U gamepad. Such games include Kirby’s Adventure, Super Mario World, Donkey King Jr., Punch Out!, and F-Zero.

TeleNav’s Scout gains support for 3D buildings and landmarks

The last we heard about TeleNav’s Scout GPS app was back in December, but the folks behind the popular navigation app are back with a new update. This time around, users will be able to take advantage of 3D buildings and landmarks while they navigate through unfamiliar cities, thanks to the SSAO technology that TeleNav has added on to the app.

Screen Shot 2013-04-15 at 2.47.54 PM

TeleNav announced the update via their Twitter account, noting that the new 3D features will “give drivers a better view and navigation experience.” The feature will be available later this year, along with crowd-sourced traffic reporting like we’ve seen in Waze. It’s not said exactly when the update will hit, but hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.

TeleNav will rely on its 34 million subscribers to report various accidents and traffic jams around the country, and the app will update itself in real-time with the traffic information it receives from its users. This means that Scout will suggest faster alternate routes when it detects that you’re about to hit some heavy traffic.

The video above shows off the 3D buildings in a demo, and while you can clearly see the outlines of the buildings, they don’t get in your way of the navigation, and you can still through the buildings and look ahead to what roads you’ll be turning on. When the update eventually does hit, it’ll be available for both free and premium users of the app.

Xbox SmartGlass for Android updates with 10-inch tablet support

Microsoft’s Xbox SmartGlass for Android has been around for a few months now, and while it supported Android tablets, only the popular 7-inchers were able to use the app, leaving larger tablets out of the questions. However, Microsoft updated the app again, adding support for 10-inch tablets, like the Nexus 10 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab (and Note) 10.1.

smartglass

If you happen to want to download the app onto your 10-inch Android slate, you’ll need to be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher, as the SmartGlass app doesn’t support older Android versions. Other than that, the app comes with some new features and slight design updates that users may find useful.

The app now includes a feature called Activity Browser Link, where you can open a web browser from within the Xbox SmartGlass app. There’s also Expanded Messaging, which lets Xbox LIVE members use SmartGlass to send and receive messages from their other Xbox LIVE friends, making it easier to chat with friends using your tablet or smartphone.

There’s also a new “Awake” State that allows users to prevent their devices from going to sleep with using the SmartGlass app, which could come in handy during those times where you don’t use the app that often during a session, but you want to keep it on and readily available. As for design changes, the updated app brings a more streamlined user interface that’s easier to use. The activity launch screen is simpler, and excess text has been removed.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket gets Jelly Bean update

Just a few days after Jelly Bean landed on the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II, it’s slightly larger brother, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket on AT&T, is now receiving the honors. AT&T announced today that Jelly Bean is now on its way to the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, and users will be able to download the update starting today.

P1070620-580x435

The Skyrocket was released was released back in November 2011 as an AT&T exclusive, and it ran Android 2.3 Gingerbread right out of the box. It was eventually updated to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and now owners are able to take advantage of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean by downloading the update either over-the-air or via Samsung Kies.

The Galaxy S II Skyrocket wasn’t a huge change over the original Galaxy S II, but it does offers a larger display at 4.5 inches over the Galaxy S II’s 4.3-incher. The Skyrocket also comes with 4G LTE that the Galaxy S II unfortunately lacks. The Skyrocket also sports a slightly faster processor at 1.5GHz and double the internal storage space.

Jelly Bean will allow Skyrocket users to take advantage of some of the great new features of the new Android OS, including Google Now, improved notifications, and smoother performance thanks to Project Butter. This may be the last update that the Galaxy S II Skyrocket receives, so savor the moment while you can.
