Next-generation Apple Mac Pro eyes-on at WWDC 2013 (video)

Nextgeneration Apple Mac Pro eyeson at WWDC 2013 video

Historically, Apple hasn’t been one to offer sneak peeks of anything. That changed today with the next-generation Mac Pro — likely a function of the fact that teasing such a machine couldn’t possibly weaken sales of a desktop that hasn’t been updated in a technological eternity. Waiting just outside of the concourse walls was one of the prototype cylinders, and it’s perhaps the sexiest workstation this world has ever seen. All we know for now is that it’ll make its debut “later this year,” boasting four USB sockets, six Thunderbolt 2 ports, a full-size HDMI connector, a 3.5mm headphone port and a pair of gigabit Ethernet ports. And yes, it’s almost certainly a fingerprint magnet. Have a gander at the eye candy below (plus a vid after the break), and our apologies for the clear case surrounding it. We attempted to remove it, and we’re now being forced to type this post with just a single hand.

Colors Cartesia Desk: Open It Any Way Which You Can

There’s a saying that the right desk will make any office, and that’s probably true of this amazing desk. It’s got a few tricks up its sleeve, so that it remains multi-functional while still looking g in your office or at home.

colors cartesia desk

The Colors Cartesia Desk allows you to access more than one desk drawer at a time, letting you open them from the front or the side. This is definitely the only desk I know with this capability.

There is a convenient side drawer to store cords, cables, along with a long slot for neatly sliding cables up to the desk’s surface. The desk is made from Tamo Tree or Walnut.

While it looks pretty awesome, get ready to cry because this baby retails for $6,000 (USD). I guess my IKEA desk will have to do for now.

AMD roadmap shows Steamroller-based Opterons on track for 2013

AMD roadmap puts Steamroller chips on track for 2013

AMD gave us a tease of its next-generation Steamroller architecture in 2012, but things weren’t looking good for pro users when the initial timeline had current-generation Piledriver technology as the focus for Opterons in 2013. Thanks to a newer investor presentation, there’s a glimmer of hope for the workstation and server users among us. Its roadmap shows Steamroller-equipped Opteron variants arriving this year, with an Excavator follow-up coming at an undetermined point in the future. There’s nothing about specific timelines and models, as you might imagine — AMD isn’t going to spoil its plans quite so readily — but the presentation reminds us that Steamroller will put an emphasis on the parallelism that’s oh so vital to high-end computing. We’re mostly glad to hear that IT backrooms will have something genuinely new to play with while we’re off enjoying its Kaveri counterpart at home.

NVIDIA’s new Quadro cards offer workstation performance for as low as $199

When you want workstation performance and reliability out of your computer, you usually have to pony up over a grand for a high-end graphics card. However, NVIDIA has released four new Quadro graphics cards that come in many different flavors, including one option called the K600 that costs only $199.

nvidia-quadro

The other three Kepler-based Quadro cards are the K4000, K2000, and the K2000D. The K4000 is the beast of the bunch, racking up 3GB of on-board memory and costing a whopping $1,269. The K2000 and K2000D are similar to one another, both of which are priced at $599 and come with 2GB of onboard memory, but the K2000D comes with native support for two dual-link DVI display connectors, which NVIDIA says is ideal for “interfacing with ultra-high-resolution medical imaging displays.”

Furthermore, the K4000 has 768 CUDA Cores, a memory bandwidth of 134 GB/s,and 1.246 teraflops. The K2000 has 384 CUDA Cores, 67 GB/s of memory bandwidth, and 733 gigaflops. The budget card of the bunch, K600 isn’t as fast, but for the money you’re paying, it’s not a bad deal. You’re looking at 192 CUDA Cores, a memory bandwidth of 29 GB/s, and 336 gigaflops.

Currently, the Quadro K5000 is the flagship card of the series, but for those who don’t need that much power out of their rig, you can grab cheaper versions that may be suited for more your speed. NVIDIA says these new cards deliver twice as much performance as previous-generation cards, and features larger and faster on-board memory to keep your graphics-intensive projects going strong.

EU Apple Online Stores list Mac Pro as unavailable prior to March 1st cutoff

EU Apple Online Stores list Mac Pro as unavailable prior to March 1st cutoff

We already knew the current line of Mac Pros would be discontinued in Europe due to new regulatory standards come March 1st, but we didn’t think Apple would pull the plug on its tower desktop this early. According to 9to5Mac, several European Apple Online Stores now show its Mac Pros as “currently unavailable” a couple of weeks before the computers are to be sunsetted. We’re not sure if this is the case with machines in brick-and-mortar locales, but Europeans keen on the existing Mac Pro should get to their nearest reseller before it’s completely out of stock. Either that or you can choose to sit tight and wait for that impending Mac Pro refresh, whenever the folks in Cupertino get around to it.

Minimal Float Wall Desk: We’ll All Float on Okay

My two desks are quite cluttered. There’s no denying it, but something like this minimal desk might actually encourage you to cut down on the wires and clutter in your home office.

minimal float desk workstation

The Minimal Float Wall Desk can be wall-mounted at any height, making it either a sitting or a standing desk. It can be ordered in walnut or rift oak, and mounts sleekly onto any wall at the height you choose – assuming you have wall studs to mount it into. It’s got a full-length slide out tray for a keyboard, mouse, writing pad or other accessories.

The design is extremely clean, but there’s one problem: you’ll have to work extra hard to hide away all of your wires, because the exposed nature of this minimal desk seems to abhor wires of any kind!

You can get the Minimal Float Wall Desk on sale for $699(USD) over at the dlab shop – it’s normally priced at $1199, so that’s a great deal.

IKEA Dioder Relief Lights: DIY Low-Budget Ambilight

If you’re like me,  you probably spend way too much time staring at a computer screen. There are some ways to reduce eyestrain, but I have to say that using IKEA’s Dioder LED light strips is one of the most effective since it’s kind of a low-tech, low-cost way of hacking your monitor into a Philips Ambilight.

ikeahack dioder monitor light

IKEA Hacker Skipernicus did this, by mounting the $30 Dioder lights on the back of his monitor. He used an Ergotron arm to prop his monitor up, but this should work with any type of monitor, including HDTVs. He also Velcroed the controller the back of the monitor, for easy access, and zip-ties were used to connect the wiring to the monitor arm.

While they won’t match the on-screen colors like an actual Ambilight, the Dioder strips can cycle through colors, and the the backlighting can reduce eyestrain, which is definitely a plus.

And for those of you who are more electronically-inclined, there actually is a color-matching hack available here.

Apple halting Mac Pro sales in Europe on March 1st in the wake of new standards

Apple Mac Pro 2010

Apple has hinted that it will give Mac Pro aficionados some love with a professional Mac follow-up sometime this year. For Europeans, though, it might not come soon enough: the company has confirmed that it’s officially stopping sales of the current Mac Pro in European Union-affiliated countries as of March 1st. Why? Soon-to-be-implemented tougher standards require that companies shield their fans and electrical ports more thoroughly than we see in the existing system, Apple says. While there’s no immediate sign of a replacement, prospective customers who want the tower for projects won’t be completely left out — resellers will be free to sell what stock they have after the cutoff date. That might still be small consolation to European pros who need heavier iron for their tasks than an iMac.

IKEA Expedit Workstation Hack: Bibiophiles Rejoice!

I use IKEA Stolmen components as my library shelves, but this sweet setup makes me think that the Expedit series could be even more versatile. This convenient workstation was nested inside an Expedit bookshelf, allowing its owner to maximize the efficiency of his available space.

ikea expedit hack 1

Space was at a premium in Jason Outlaw’s one bedroom apartment. So he decided to use his Expedit as not only his bookshelf, but as his computer workstation and a TV stand. Jason added IKEA Non-Spotlights to add a bit of light, but the cooler, energy-efficient LED Dioders could work pretty well too. A slide-out Kensington keyboard holder fit his MacBook perfectly. Because of the depth of the shelves, his radio and receiver are hidden away behind books, and speakers are used as bookends. When not in use, the TV is covered up by a removable art panel.

ikea expedit hack 2

It’s a cool hack, though I prefer large desks to allow my clutter to spread out.
