LG Thrill 4G officially arrives at AT&T for $100, fairy tales can come true

C’mon, admit it — you didn’t really think the LG Thrill 4G would ever be released, did you? After several weeks of unexplained delays, the AT&T-branded Optimus 3D is truly, honestly available on the carrier’s website for sale at a respectable $100. The device, announced at CTIA 2011 in March, isn’t hiding anything we didn’t already know: it’s got a 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4 CPU with 512MB of RAM, Froyo, a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display, 1080p video capture and dual 5MP rear stereoscopic cameras to add the extra dimension. So if you’ve been waiting for this phone to get the green light, it’s time to stop idling at the intersection.

The chrome trimmed, 14.4Mbps HSDPA capable handset’ll run you $350 (before a $50 mail-in rebate) with a two-year commitment, or you can always fork over the full $600 if you’d rather steer clear of the carrier’s contract chains. Sharp Galapagos A01SH tablet goes on sale in Japan from $1, comes with a catch

Sharp’s 7-inch tablet running Android 3.2? Yeah, it’s taking its sweet time arriving stateside, though our friends in Japan can get the Galapagos A01SH now for a starting price of… $1 (¥100). There’s more than a little fine print, of course, which states you have to sign up with an ISP to score that deal — a curious promotion given that this is a WiFi-only slate (carriers will bundle it with a portable hotspot). Those who like their tabs no strings attached can scoop one up for ¥44,800 ($583). As for those of you mumbling something about how we need another Tegra 2-powered Android tablet like we need a hole in the head, remember that this remains one of a handful of 7-inchers running Android 3.2 — a space currently occupied by the Acer Iconia Tab A100, ViewSonic ViewPad 7x and forthcoming Huawei MediaPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. So if you’re dead-set on a 7-inch tab, like Honeycomb and are lucky enough to be wandering the streets of Nippon, have at it, folks.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9900 available on August 31st, on presale to business customers today

There’s a good chance you’ve already heard a thing or two (or a hundred) about the BlackBerry Bold 9900 series, so by now you have a good idea whether or not you’ll want to pick one up. So if you’re leaning toward “buy,” T-Mobile’s got one coming to a retail store near you on August 31st, with the phone on presale for business customers starting today. HP Pre 3 now available for purchase on official European store

Pop quiz: what’s the best way to launch a phone that’s left us waiting with anticipation for seven months? HP’s answer is to quietly release it on its European store without any pomp or circumstance. We have no idea why the company chose to start selling the Pre 3, its new flagship phone, without any media buzz; the important thing here, however, is that the SIM-free device is now available for purchase on the Palm Eurostore. The phone can be all yours for £299 — the equivalent of $490 in the US — which is a respectable price point for a no-commitment smartphone of its caliber. So far we’ve only seen the phone get pushed out across the pond; European retailers Clove and Box are following HP’s lead by offering the Pre 3 as well, just in case the official store runs out of stock. It’s probably not too likely, given the company’s lack of marketing efforts on this particular launch, but we could always be surprised. After all, we’ve been waiting for seven months.

Update: PreCentral just received an official statement from HP confirming that the Pre 3 is indeed launching in Europe, and more information will be available for the US soon. Here’s the full quote:

HP is excited to begin its regional rollout of Pre3, the only phone today that offers users a slide-out keyboard coupled with a large touchscreen and the fastest speed (1.4GHz processor – the fastest on the market). We expect to share additional information for U.S. customers soon.

So that’s it — a four-line announcement to launch the Pre 3. But hey, it’s at least something.

Mozilla officially releases Firefox 6, wants to show you how it’s done

You may have caught wind of one sly fox unofficially popping up over the weekend. Well, as we reported, that fox — specifically Firefox 6 — is now officially ready for your downloading pleasure. If you’re a diehard Mozilla fan, or just an armchair browser expert, you’re probably already hip to the new Firefox rapid refresh cycle that’s seen three releases in the past five months. Firefox 6 breaks out ahead of schedule, gets official August 16th

It looks like the sly fox is ready to make its worldwide debut a few days early. In typical Mozilla fashion, a complete build of Firefox 6 is now unofficially available for your downloading pleasure, three days ahead of schedule. If you’re looking for a major facelift to the desktop edition, you won’t find one here — most of the new features aren’t cosmetic. Perhaps most visibly, you’ll find the domain name of the page you’re parked on highlighted in the address bar. On the Android side, version 6 makes much bigger promises, like a “fresh visual style in Chrome Gingerbread,” enhanced image scaling, and, perhaps most importantly, it’s “faster and uses less memory.” We’ve downloaded the desktop version of the browser ourselves, and we’ve found the release quite snappy. Sony Ericsson’s tiny Xperia Mini and Mini Pro on sale now in Taiwan and Hong Kong

They’ve been announced, manhandled (by us and the FCC), and now they’re finally on sale… in Taiwan and Hong Kong. That’s right, some of the first folks to put Sony Ericsson’s latest Android phones in their pockets will be the citizens around HTC’s very own turf. According to VR-Zone and our brethren over at Engadget Chinese, both the Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro are on shelves now for NT$7990 / HK$2,098 (about US$270) and NT$8990 (US$310) / HK$2,198 (US$280) respectively. It probably won’t be much longer now till these pair of itty-bitty, 3-inch Gingerbread phones hit the states but, if you’re impatient, those two cities are only about a 13-hour flight away.

Samsung Series 3 laptops crop up on Amazon, 12.1-inch model still AWOL

Samsung’s Series 3 laptops deliver more performance-per-dollar than the ultra-thin Series 9, at the expense of — well, ultra-thinness. That said, the 12.1-inch model hardly struck as megalithic when we went hands-on last month, and we’re keen to see it emerge from pre-order status. For those who can’t wait, or who prefer a bigger screen and keyboard, then a couple of larger siblings have just become available via third-party retailers at Amazon. There’s a 5.5-pound, 15.6-inch variant with an i3 processor, 4GB of DDR3 and a 500GB HDD going for $590. Alternatively, you can pick up a 14-incher for $60 more, with mainly the same specs but a slightly bigger 640GB HDD. As for us, we’re holding out for that elusive baby brother, for the sake of its superior i5 processor and our aging knees.

Poll: Did you download Mac OS X Lion (10.7)?

Apple confirmed Lion’s big day during the company’s Q3 earnings call this week, and Mac OS 10.7 hit the App Store right on schedule yesterday morning, allowing us to give Snow Leopard the boot and make room for the king of the jungle. We’ve already installed Lion on a half-dozen of our own systems, testing the new operating system with a variety of configurations for our review. But we want to know about your experience. Did you pull an all-nighter on Tuesday, backing up files, reformatting drives, and updating to 10.6.8? Are you still rockin’ dial-up and waiting for the $69 flash drive version to ship next month?
