iPad 2 cases surface, rekindle SD card slot fire and add a pinch of mystery with topside cutout

There’s usually as much fun to be had before an Apple product launch as there is after, and this upcoming iPad 2 device is no exception. The latest scuttlebutt it has succumbed to comes courtesy of some cases that have cropped up in China — AppleInsider and MIC Gadget have independently found iPad 2 shells that feature nearly identical cutouts — with the resulting allegations pointing toward a rear-facing camera, an SD card slot, and perhaps even a Mini DisplayPort receptacle. Our own sources have confirmed the former two, but the latter, a miniaturized video output already featured in MacBooks, is a new development and less of a certainty. Then again, looking at the size of the hole leaves few alternative options (and a USB slot is extremely unlikely), so we’re willing to believe that a Mini DisplayPort will be an inclusion Apple makes for the sake of offering choice — even if it prefers you to send your video streams over an untethered AirPlay connection.

Go Retro with VintageVinyl

VinylCase.jpg

For those who love the look of a vinyl record but would prefer to actually listen to an iPod, there’s the new VintageVinyl Record case. It gives the appearance of vinyl, as if a real vinyl record was molded onto the back on an iPhone 4. It’s available today for the AT&T and the Verizon iPhone 4. It’s new school meets old school, says case-maker Lenntek.

How realistic is the case? There are precision-cut grooves on the case to fully give the look of a vinyl record. The case comes with two record labels that can be written on and placed on the back of the case for a custom look. It’s a smart choice for the clumsy, as the soft-touch rubberized coating on the sides gives owners an extra grip. Lenntek is selling it for $34.99.

Ask Engadget: best non-garish ATX mid-tower for the budget gamer?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Zach, who needs a new home for his PC internals. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“For various reasons, I am going to be moving my computer around a lot more frequently soon, and I am looking for a new computer case that’s relatively easy to take around. Basically, I mean the type of case with handle(s) on the top. It needs to be an ATX mid-tower, and I’d like it as cheap as I can get without it being horrible (I do have an overclocked CPU and a dedicated cooling unit, so it needs to be well-vented).

I’m not a fan of garish cases with lots of LEDs — I especially really dislike green / blue LEDs (I’m getting really sick of my current case, which is decked-out in blue). I might be cool with red or orange, though. However, any aesthetics come second to utility and price.”

Zach, we like your style. You’re probably well on your way to becoming a man, and a sophisticated one at that. Here’s hoping you’ll receive loads of similarly sophisticated answers from sophisticated men and women below.

Powermat’s 2011 product roadmap: colorful iPhone cases, extended batteries, and more

Much of this stuff was shown off publicly for the first time at CES last week, but we thought it might be interesting to get everything that wireless charging company Powermat has planned for 2011 into one convenient place — and that’s exactly what this here slide deck has done for us. The first products in the pipeline for this year include a charging case for the Nokia N8, targeted for early Q2, along with a two-device portable charging mat that includes a built-in battery (7,800mAh!) that promises up to four full smartphone charges while staying completely off the grid; look for those to run $40 and $130, respectively. Later in the quarter, you’ll get a white two-unit mat (all of Powermat’s gear is black right now, so it’s a nice change of pace), several colored iPhone 4 cases, a BlackBerry Torch case, and an $80 so-called Power! Case for the iPhone 4 that integrates an external 1,800mAh battery for extra juice on the go.

Moving on to the third quarter of the year, you’ll see a dual-power one-device mat that can be powered either from the wall or a USB port for $40, a car mount that inductively charges your Powermat-enabled device, and an iPod touch case. Finally, the 1X Rechargeable Mat comes late in Q3, packing some undetermined (or at least unlisted) amount of juice into a mat that looks roughly similar to the existing one-device mat that’s already on the market; like Powermat’s other battery-powered mats, this one lets you juice devices when you’re not near an outlet, and it’ll be available for $70. Hit up the gallery for the full deck!

Incipio shows off Game Boy-themed iPhone case and no, you can’t have it

Do you want this Game Boy-themed iPhone 4 case? Well, how does it feel to want? Not all that hot from where we’re sitting, that’s for damn sure. Spotted at Incipio’s CES booth, the company put the case together to demo the company’s production capabilities. Sadly, for us, the thing won’t be coming to market at any time in the near future (unless someone in Shenzhen decides to take on the cause, that is). We must say, this is a big improvement over the company’s iPod nano watch bands — and an immense improvement over the guy who shoved an HTC Aria inside his old Game Boy (throwing in a fake iPhone 4 for good measure). Get another look after the break.

Rocketfish iCapsule keyboard case looks ugly but exceedingly useful

So far, iPad keyboard cases seem to follow two schools of thought — the folio and the mini-clamshell — and while both have their merits, neither do the job quite as well as the set of chiclets on your standard netbook. Best Buy’s in-house Rocketfish label has a different idea: forget about making it svelte, and just hand you a full-size Bluetooth laptop keyboard that holds your iPad as well. It’s called the iCapsule, and as you can probably tell it can accommodate your slate in both portrait and landscape modes, and when you’re done it folds up into a hardshell case with an integrated carrying handle. The unit takes two AA batteries — rather than a rechargeable Li-ion cell — and costs $100 to own, though it’s presently both on sale for $80 and unfortunately out of stock. We’ll let you know if we get the chance to try it for ourselves. Two more pics at our source link, if it has piqued your curiosity by now.

[Thanks, Yeti]

Case-Mate Announces Verizon iPhone Accessories

Verizon_iPhone_Case-Mate3.jpg
It’s been a little over 24 hours since Verizon announced it will be selling the iPhone 4 in February, and the accessories manufacturers are already jumping at the chance to sell their iPhone cases to new Verizon iPhone customers. Just how different will the AT&T iPhone case be from a Verizon iPhone case? That’s yet to be determined. That being said, Case-Mate has announced its line of Verizon iPhone accessories.

Its new line of cases will vary in a range of colors, textures, and materials. They’re not available for sale just yet, but you can sign up to get e-mail updates and arrival notifications when they are.

Some of the cases look familiar, like the Vroom, and the Gelli, but there are many new designs that are sure to tickle your fancy. Personally, I like the Waddler and the Monsta.

The US+U Swivel Pro iPad Case Fits Your Palm

US+U Swivel Pro

Remember the Colorware Grip for iPad, that case that’s pretty much a shell for your iPad with a handle on one side for easy transport? Well, the US+U Swivel Pro is an iPad case that takes the concept to the next level.
Instead of giving you a handle, you have a full grip on the back that you slide your hand into and hold the iPad in one place. If you need to switch from portrait to landscape mode, you don’t need to change your handhold, simply rotate the iPad to the orientation you prefer and your hand stays put, thanks to the swivel grip on the back.
The case also features a kickstand with variable height so you can work or watch videos on your iPad, along with openings for your power and volume buttons and dock connector.
The US+U is made of synthetic leather and the inside is micro-suede so it won’t damage your device. Best of all, 3% of the purchase price of the US+U Swivel Pro goes to one of five charities that you can choose from when you make the purchase. It is available now for $69.99 list price.

How About a Case for that Verizon iPhone?

MoGoTalkXDVerizon.jpg

That didn’t take long. ID8-Mobile, which creates accessories for mobile devices, just released the MoGo Talk XD2 for the Verizon iPhone 4. It’s a Bluetooth headset and a case all in one. The included MoGo Bluetooth headset stores and charges on the iPhone. The case now features a sleek industrial design with a carbon black headset and case. It will begin shipping on February 3, 2000, to ensure that new Verizon iPhone 4 users will have it already when their new iPhone ships.

The whole package gets you the MoGo talk headset, the Easy-Grip case, six different earbuds, a microUSB charging table, and a quick start guide. Look for it to list for $99.99.

M-Edge: Make Your iPad Look Like a Book

fahrenheit 451 ipad.jpg

Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper burns. I’m not sure what temperature it would take to ignite, but I imagine it would be considerably hotter. There’s something about the concept of an iPad wrapped up in the cover of that Ray Bradbury classic that really caught my imagination. I’m not whether it’s a good thing or not.
You see, gadgets like the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad certainly get points for keeping people, but for someone like myself who really does still fetishize paper books, it’s maybe a little troubling.
Of course, that book is just one of several titles you can pick to cover your iPad or Kindle, courtesy of the folks at M-Edge. The Website lets people create their own cover for those devices, either by uploading their own design or picking a number of pre-configured ones, a list that also includes classic covers of Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and several issues of The New Yorker.
