Viewsonic G Tablet gets firmware update with Flash, USB peripheral support

Viewsonic’s G Tablet may not have made much of splash when it debuted last fall, but it’s certainly been picking up a bit of steam as of late. A recent price drop brought its cost down to just $280, and hackers have even managed to overclock its processor to 1.4GHz and get it running CyanogenMod 7 to boot. Now Viewsonic itself has given the tablet a further boost, with a new firmware update bringing support for both Flash and USB peripherals, which can apparently also be used with a docking station. The update’s of the over-the-air variety, and should be waiting for you if you haven’t turned on your G Tablet in the past few days.

iOS 4.3.2 / 4.2.7 now available to download, fixes iPad 3G and FaceTime woes (update: jailbroken!)

If you’re hankering to be riding the very latest mobile software from Apple, hit up your iTunes, for version 4.3.2 of iOS is now available for downloadin’ and updatin’. Fixes for occasional “blank or frozen” FaceTime video and iPad 3G issues get top billing, while the obligatory security updates fill out the rest. The size of this mighty software drop? A hefty 666.2MB.

Update: Well, someone’s skipping class today. A tethered jailbreak is already in the wilds, if you dare. Thanks, Jeff!

Update 2: Looks like Verizon customers are getting a slightly different update of their own: iOS 4.2.7. It promises only “bug fixes and security updates.”

Canon’s XF305 and XF300 pro camcorders can now shoot in 3D… if you buy two of them

Make no mistake: that whole 3D-everything trend is snaking its way into professional-grade products. Canon has issued a firmware update allowing its year-old XF305 and XF300 pro camcorders to record 3D HD video. There’s a catch, though: you’ll need two of these bad boys, which cost a princely $8,000 and $6,700, respectively. For those with a well-stocked studio, Canon’s “3D Assist Feature” aims to take some of the grunt work out of setting up two cameras to record in 3D by optically aligning their lenses and calibrating their zoom settings. The company also beefed up the scan reverse feature so that you can flip the orientation of the video to horizontal, vertical or diagonal — a strong likelihood if you’re using a 3D mirror rig. Canon slipped in a few extra goodies as well, including the ability to turn off relay recording from one memory card to another, and to simultaneously record to two memory cards, should you be paranoid about data loss. So what are you waiting for? Download the update. And, you know, get yourself a second camera.

Boxee details next Box update with iPad support and more in May

We refuse to be surprised that the next Boxee Box update isn’t actually arriving by the end of March, but just to tide us over CEO Avner Ronen has picked up his blogging pen and revealed many of the changes on the way. As mentioned on that Australian podcast, the browser will be faster, as well as a new on-screen display for FF/RW controls, options for sorting local files and additional language support. A smiley face is reserved for the news that support for Boxee for iPad will be included, before moving on to a list of bugs that will be stamped out. Early access users should expect to see test builds rolling out shortly, with plans for major updated to the Boxee Box (and “other Boxee based devices“) every three months or so so we should expect this one in May — no word on anything for the PC clients. Creative’s 7-inch ZiiO tablet gets Froyo this Friday, 10-inch model to follow suit

If you happen to be one of the handful of Creative ZiiO tablet users, then we have good news for you: come Friday, the 7-incher will be the first of the Ziio duo to receive its Froyo update, whereas its 10-inch sibling’s expected to follow suit by April. So what’s new? Well, the list includes greater language support, new passcode options, the ability to install apps onto external storage, and a text-to-speech engine. Once available, you can obtain the update from either Creative’s website or the tablets’ ZiiO Space portal; but by all means, feel free to butter up the folks over at xda-developers to slap some Honeycomb onto these ZiiOs instead.

If you’re rocking a PlayStation Plus subscription and can’t wait to boot your savegames into the cloud, you’ll be happy to hear that the System Update enabling that — firmware v3.60 — is available for download right now. If you aren’t paying $50 a year for PS Plus, what good is it to you? Well, it’ll let you set how long you’d like the system to wait before it tells your DualShock and Sixaxis controllers to shut down, hopefully conserving battery life without intermittent annoyance. Enjoy!

Nexus One Android 2.3.3 update arrives OTA, breaks Google Voice for some

We’re guessing that most of our readers pounced on the official Android 2.3.3 update just as soon as the links lit up last week. But if you did dawdle, don’t dally… the latest Gingerbread update is now rolling out over-the-air. Unfortunately, the update also broke Google Voice on our N1 — something that we fixed by downloading and installing an old GV.apk and then updating to the latest version in Market per instructions found in Google’s support forum left by others suffering from the same issue. Nexus S 2.3.3 update adjusts screen’s color temperature, we go eyes-on

We’ve been hearing reports about Nexus S’ Android 2.3.3 update adding a yellow tint to the screen and even washing out its colors, but according to Google’s Ry Guy, said patch is indeed intended to tweak the display’s color temperature. Here’s the full quote from Google’s support forum:

“With your new OTA complete, you may notice a slight difference in the way colors are displayed on your Nexus S. For Nexus S, we have adjusted the color temperature settings to more accurately reflect darker colors at all brightness levels. The Gingerbread UI being darker, we found that the colors were not as accurate when the device was being used at lower brightness levels. For example, some users reported that the initial color temperature was too high leading to some darker greys having a reddish tone; with the new color temperature this is no longer the case.”

So while this display tweak is well-intentioned, it looks like many commenters on both the forum and XDA-Developers aren’t too happy with this. Being curious geeks that we are, we went ahead and manually updated our own Nexus S (and by the way, be sure to match your build number with the appropriate patch). As you can see in our comparison photos (shot with the same manual camera settings and medium screen brightness), the new overall color temperature is no doubt subtly warmer, although the dimmer brightness settings no longer suffer from the aforementioned red tone. Interestingly, we actually approve this change, and the Super AMOLED display certainly doesn’t look washed out to us, nor do we see any noisy dithering that some have reported. Surely we can’t be alone. Well, there’s only one way to help solve this mystery: if you happen to be a fellow Nexus S owner who’s applied this update, why not chime in below?

Netflix on the Boxee Box is a much better Valentine’s Day gift than what you had planned

These days, a media streamer isn’t really in the game unless it has Netflix streaming and thankfully, the Boxee Box has finally corrected its most glaring content hole — sorry Hulu Plus. According to a blog post by CEO Avner Ronen, the oft-delayed addition has been the most common request by users so far but obviously they’ve cleared all remaining DRM hurdles, so once the latest software update is downloaded, either automatically or by manually checking, owners can enjoy everything the latest Netflix interface has to offer, whether they’re in the US or Canada. Of course, that’s not all there is to this update, with support for Dolby Digital TrueHD bitstreaming, high resolution SRT subtitles and updated support for IR remotes. All the details are in the changelog, although we figure most of you will just get straight to watching The Human Centipede or something similar.

Kindle gets software update 3.1 with real page numbers, public notes

It’ll still be at least a few more days before it’s automatically pushed out to Kindles around the world, but those looking to get a jump on things can now download an “early preview” of software update version 3.1 for the latest generation Kindle. That update adds a new public notes feature that lets you share your notes with others and view the notes of those you follow, as well as real page numbers that match the page numbers in the print version of a book — those have already been added to “tens of thousands of Kindle books,” and will also be hitting the various Kindle apps in the “coming months.” You’ll also get a new layout for magazines and newspapers that gives you a quick snapshot of the latest edition, and a new “before you go” feature that lets you rate a book as soon as you’ve finished it and share a brief note about it on your social networks.
