Know what beats selling CDs (or USB sticks) and swag out of the trunk of your struggling band’s party wagon? Striking a deal with Google to pitch those wares on the interwebs, that’s what. Rolling out to official YouTube partners over the next few weeks, the newly created Merch Store will offer fans from all across the globe an opportunity to purchase MP3s, tickets for concerts and gatherings, and, of course, merchandise straight from your dedicated page. Helping ol’ Mountain View make these coffer-filling goodies available are a handful of established online retailers like Amazon, iTunes, Songkick and Topspin. So, if you just can’t wait for the Rebecca Black arena rock tour to blitz through your small town, keep clicking refresh on that artist channel for the inevitable slew of merchandising, merchandising.

Ice Cream Sandwich may have a built-in photo editor to help your pictures turn out halfway decent

If you envision Ice Cream Sandwich — the latest iteration of Android — as a revolutionary update that satisfies every single one of your geeky lusts, we sure hope you’ve been aching for a photo editor. It appears that AndroidPolice has hunted down a variety of icons and logos presumed to be associated with the feature, but it’s not certain if these will actually appear in the final build. The icons hint at a smattering of image editing tools: crop, sharpen, flip, rotate and a selection of 19 possible photo effects are among the options. Again, this is highly speculative, and rumors such as these will likely ramp up as we approach the official announcement. ‘Course, we won’t scoff at the idea of a native photo editor in Ice Cream Sandwich, but we’re sincerely hoping this won’t be the coolest thing about the new OS at Tuesday’s announcement in Hong Kong.

New Features in Google Docs & Presentation

It looks as though the teams working on Google’s Presentations and Documents applications have been busy over the last several months. Both have new features that make the online applications even better. 

We’ll start with Google Docs first.  One of the newest features will allow you to add a heater and/or footer to your documents.  It’s one of those basic features in desktop office suites that is often taken for granted. If you’d like to add a header or footer to your document in Google Docs,  just go to the “Insert Tab” and look for the “Header” and “Footer” options across the top. When you click to add a header, it will place a box at the top outlined with a dotted line where you can insert your text.  It works the same for the footer, except the box for the text is placed at the bottom of your document (as shown below). You can format those headers and footers, and align the text however you’d like (centered).

Moving on to Google Presentations, they too have a list of new features to kick off the new year. Here’s what you’ll find new:

  • Embeddable Presentations
  • Import slides from other presentations
  • Drag and drop image insertion
  • Easily rearrange slides
  • Change the background to a solid color or upload an image – apply to just one slide or all
  • Updated toolbar that’s easier on the eyes

LG DoublePlay makes its official intro on T-Mobile, offers dual-screens and split keyboard

Where have all the split-keyboard phones gone? It’s been roughly six years since the days of the Nokia E70, a messaging device with an innovative form factor, but handsets with a similar mold have become extreme rarities in the market — if they even make it to the market at all (remember the MotoSplit?). LG’s hoping to gain some ground in this area by officially announcing the DoublePlay, a unique Android 2.3 handset with dual touchscreens and split QWERTY. Here’s the scoop: the DoublePlay’s powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and offers a 5MP rear-facing camera capable of capturing 720p HD video. Where it gets interesting, however, is in the DoublePlay’s design — it uses a 3.5-inch display on top, sliding out to reveal a 2-inch internal screen sandwiched in between both halves of the keyboard. As it turns out, both screens can be used separately or in tandem with each other, depending on your needs. No pricing or availability was specifically announced, but the presser appears to coincide with the 2011 National Texting Championship beginning October 26th, so the phone will likely launch around the same time. Perhaps we have a device here that’ll be a legend in another seven years?

Official Android updates

  • Motorola Xoom owners who swapped in their devices for one with LTE capability may have found an OTA enhancement waiting for them when the tablet arrived.   • The update to the Motorola Droid 2 Global was pulled last month due to an Exchange encryption issue, but we’re hearing reports that it’s once again resuming the rollout with that concern resolved. [Droid-Life]
  • Motorola’s Photon 4G on Sprint is on the receiving end of a minor bug fix update, which includes video chat capability for Google Talk. [PhoneArena]
  • The good news for unlocked Dell Streak 7 users: the official update to Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) is now rolling out and you should see it over the course of the next couple weeks. the coming weeks. [Dell]
  • The bad news for T-Mobile Dell Streak 7 users: Honeycomb isn’t coming to your tablet, for unknown reasons. [Android Community]

Unofficial Android updates, custom ROMs and misc. hackery

  • A new piece of firmware for the AT&T Galaxy S II was leaked via RootzWiki, and includes a few bug fixes. Sadly, it adds some bugs as well. [Android Community]
  • Samsung’s officially released the kernel source for the Stratosphere, Transfix and Galaxy Y Pro. [Android Community]
  • And now for the best news for TouchPad owners: after several weeks of progress, it appears that CM7 is now ready to roll on the HP TouchPad. As always, download and install at your own risk — we have a feeling this may be a bit more involved than your typical Android custom ROM. [Redmond Pie]

Google Music Clues Start Popping Up

It looks like some more clues about Google Music are starting to make their way around the web. Garett Rogers received a tip stating that Google is currently working on some of the kinks in the service. Here are some things that they are supposedly working on:

  1. Possible names for the music service are GMusic or Google Tunes.
  2. These services will be integrated into Google Desktop.
  3. Music videos will either be undownloadable or 30 second clips that are stored in a .gvi format.
  4. Google Videos will have a music video section.

The truth behind these rumors are currently unknown but they are all plausible. Hopefully we will start to see some confirmed information about the Google Music service.

New Addition to Picasa: Flash Slideshows

First things first: If you haven’t upgraded to Picasa 2.7, now would probably be a good time to do that.  It’s been available for a couple of weeks, and there are major improvements, in particular speed improvements.

Once you have that done, go checkout Picasa’s new flash slideshow feature. A handful of startups have offered a slide-show presentation that could be embedded into sites and blogs, but Picasa has never offered it as a built-in feature.

The slideshow is created from your Picasa Web Albums, and you can easily embed the slideshow presentation into your blog or any other website. They even offer you a few customization options like size.  You can select whether you want the presentation to be small (144 pixels) or extra extra large (800 pixels), and a few options in-between.

Another choice that they give you is whether or not you’d like to have the caption for each of the photos displayed. The slide-show feature only takes a few clicks, and it’s easy to use. Now if they could just add an option to loop the slideshow so it doesn’t just end, I think people will be absolutely satisfied with it.

Google Voice pulled from App Store following iOS 5 crash

What once was there now is gone. Earlier today, Google Voice was just two clicks away in the iOS App Store. Now, all that remains is a page cache (at the source link below) and versions of the app that were already installed on iPhones and iPod touches. Vincent Paquet, Senior Product Manager for Google Voice confirmed that the app had been pulled, explaining “our last update of this week had a bug that caused the app to crash at sign in. We removed it so it did not affect additional users until the fix gets published.” We’ve been using the most recent version — 1.3.0.1771 — on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 without issue, but recent reviews cite the reported crashing, so it’s definitely affecting at least some users. We don’t have an ETA for when you can expect the app to return, so if you don’t already have it installed, you’ll need to hang tight for the time being. The service should function normally otherwise, assuming your phone number has already been registered, though you won’t be able to begin new text threads or make outgoing calls using your Google Voice number.
