Leaked FCC document details AT&T’s 4G LTE rollout plans, talks up T-Mobile merger

On Friday, a law firm accidentally posted a letter to the FCC website, detailing AT&T’s confidential 4G LTE rollout plans and explaining how they would be bolstered by a merger with T-Mobile. Arnold & Porter LLP, which is helping design the deal on AT&T’s behalf, quickly removed its partially redacted document, but the folks over at Gizmodo have gotten their hands on it once again and recently posted it for our viewing pleasure. According to the document, AT&T plans to extend its US coverage to 70 million consumers by the end of this year, before ramping that figure up to 170 million by the end of 2012 and a full 250 million by the end of the following year. The carrier plans to achieve this by upgrading a full 44,000 of its nodes to LTE over the course of the next three years and, once its merger goes through, hopes to cover 97 percent of all Americans within the six years following approval. The letter goes on to explain how the economics behind the TIA-approved deal would help facilitate these aspirations, while confirming that the merger is indeed as expensive as earlier reported — a whopping $3.8 billion, to be exact. Windows Phone Mango RTM leaks into the wild, offers tropical sweets for the daring

For those who’ve longed for Twitter integration and multitasking capabilities on your Windows Phone, the folks at xda-developers have a weekend project you’re bound to flip over: the final version of Mango has leaked, and it’s available for download today. Internally, it’s known as build 7720, and it requires the post-NoDo update dubbed 7392. Alternately, users of Mango beta versions 7661 and 7712 may hop on board, too. If you’ve got a couple hours to spare, a full list of instructions — along with the operating system itself — is included in the source. So far, the software has been confirmed to work on the HD7, Mozart, Trophy, Focus, Arrive, Venue Pro and Optimus 7. As always, proceed at your own risk, and best wishes for your tropical getaway.

Sony announcing three NEX lenses on August 24th?

Last month we fell in love with a camera. Specifically, the Sony NEX-C3. We were so enamored with its lilliputian body and stunning image quality that we gave it a “9,” declared it nearly perfect and promptly began recommending it to everyone we know. But if there’s one thing we thought needed improvement, it was the selection of lenses. Well, it looks like we had nothing to fret about — a series of leaked shots suggest the outfit’s had at least three in the works all along. According to the shots, originally posted in DPReview, we’re looking at a 55-210mm / F4.5-6.3 zoom lens and fixed 50mm / F1.8 and 24mm / F1.8 numbers. Though the poster stopped short of revealing any pricing info, he seems confident Sony will announce them on August 24th. Now, while we typically take rumors with a grain of salt, it turns out that the tipster who posted these shots is none other than “Eddieaus,” the same guy who splattered forums with pictures of the VAIO Z next to its external Power Media Dock — the same press photos, in fact, that Sony unveiled days later. So we’re inclined to believe NEX loyalists are about to get a few new pieces of glass to play with. And if that rumored August 24th launch date is also on the money, you won’t have to wait too long to find out how many pretty pennies they’ll cost.

Sony LA-EA2 lens adapter gets ready for its close-up in ‘leaked’ render

Hey Sony, you hear that? Sounds like you might have another leak on your hands. We got our fourth unofficial look at Sony’s Alpha A77 this morning, and now it’s time for a little accessorizing. What you see above is reportedly a shot of a new lens adapter called the LA-EA2, which would apparently bring the outfit’s translucent mirror technology to its range of little NEX shooters. As you might recall, that mini-mirror brings with it continuous phase-detect autofocus. Of course, this is just a rumor, but it does lines up with previous reports of a forthcoming NEX-7. You know we enjoy a leak as much as the next guy, but we like hard facts even more. So what’s it going to be Sony?

Droid Bionic spotted in the wild, again, blurrycam still in full effect

We’re getting tired of all this teasing without any payoff, but when it comes Motorola’s forthcoming dual-core Droid, we can’t help ourselves. Just days ago we saw the Bionic’s guts when it passed through the FCC, and now we’ve got fresh pics of the phone in the wild. This most recent sneak peek comes courtesy of Howard Forums user ceb unit, who posted a couple photos of the device after a Moto rep let a friend get handsy with the newest Droid. It’s good to see civilians get their paws on one, but enough already, we want shots of this thing in the hands of some happy customers!

Android Ice Cream Sandwich pictures leak, leave us slightly cold

Well what do we have here? It looks like Ice Cream Sandwich might have escaped from Google’s freezer a little early. Let’s be clear here — we’re not 100 percent sure this is the next major version of Android, but the evidence is somewhat convincing. Both Android Police and RootzWiki posted screenshots of a Nexus S running a blue-ish themed skin which appears similar to the Gingerbread UI, but with a revised dock containing four icons instead of the usual three. Most of the changes are mild, but introduce functionality that already exist in Honeycomb. The camera app is said to gain a panorama mode, and the Gmail app is supposed to match the design of the new OS. New Nokia WP7 handsets either leaked or faked, it’s hard to tell (video)

This is a tricky one. You’re looking at a grab from a slightly shaky video that was emailed to Jay Montano and MyNokiaBlog. The tipster claimed to be a Microsoft insider, but used a .ovi email address. The video itself certainly looks polished, although it culls a couple of bits of footage from marketing clips that have been out for a while, including a futuristic segment from a Microsoft Office Labs promo. It’s either a genuine leak revealing new handsets that look substantially different to the Sea Ray, or it’s one of those silly Nokia-style manufactured leaks, or — very possibly — it’s just a nicely edited bit of fakery from a fan. But, whoever made it, we think they have some style.

Acer’s Aspire 3951 leaks with MacBook Air-like specs, available in October?

It looks like Acer may be dropping down to the lightweight laptop division, now that images of its so-called Aspire 3951 have leaked out of Vietnam. An ostensible rival to the recently refreshed MacBook Air, the 13.3-inch 3951 reportedly boasts a similarly slim design, measuring 13mm thick and weighing less than 1.4 kilograms (about three pounds). According to Sohoa, the aluminum-cased device is powered by a second generation Intel Core processor, features an optional 160GB SSD, and offers more than six hours of battery life, along with Bluetooth 4.0 support. Much like the Air, this Aspire can purportedly boot up pretty fast, as well, rousing from sleep mode in just 1.7 seconds. It’s rumored that Acer will release this new line in October within the curiously affordable price range between $770 and $960, but we’ll have to wait and see whether that actually comes to fruition. Update: Oddly enough, it appears that we’ve caught a glimpse of this exact same laptop before, except it was portrayed by M.I.C. Gadget as a Thunderbolt MacBook Air leak. Perhaps the folks received some bad intel, be it intentional or not.

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE phone surfaces in Korea, codenamed Celox?

There’s a new Samsung Galaxy S II rumor circulating the web today — this time, it’s emanating from South Korea, where specs and images of an LTE smartphone, reportedly codenamed “Celox,” have just surfaced. According to its listing, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor, sports a 4.5-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, and boasts 16GB of internal memory, with a microSD slot offering an extra 32GB. The phone also runs on Gingerbread, rocks a 1750mAh battery (compared to the smaller Galaxy S II’s 1650mAH cell), offers 800MHz LTE support (at up to 50Mbps upstream, 100Mbps downstream) and features an 8MP rear-facing camera, along with a 2MP sensor up front. It all seems pretty similar to that Hercules handset we recently spotted, except for its noticeably different home button, protruding back, and LED flash. No word yet on if or when the handset will hit the market, but considering that both Verizon and AT&T support 700MHz LTE, this particular model may be destined for Europe’s 800MHz networks, rather than the US. We’ll be sure to bring you all the details as soon as they pour in.

Leakster names Sprint’s latest: Samsung Epic 4G Touch, HTC EVO Design 4G, and Motorola Admiral

We love starting the week with a good leak, and thanks to an anonymous tipster, we’re swimming in a flood of juicy names. First, it appears the Samsung Within is getting a new alias, and without delaying your anticipation, let us re-introduce you to Sprint’s upcoming Galaxy S II handset: the Epic 4G Touch. As the moniker suggests, the QWERTY keyboard is likely sliding away, though lovers of physical buttons might find solace with the mysterious Epic 2. If your ideal smartphone combines qHD resolution with HTC Sense — and eschews the 3D display and dual-core CPU — the Kingdom is one step closer to reality, and it’ll be known as the EVO Design 4G. Finally, a new Motorola will arrive at the Now Network, and it’s been christened the Admiral. Unlike its peers, it’s lacking the “4G” nomenclature, meaning it’s avoiding the upper echelons of Sprint’s stable… and hopefully sporting longer battery life, too.
