Upcoming Kinect Development Kit Could Change In-Store Shopping

The Xbox Kinect is Microsoft’s big push into motion-controlled gaming. You don’t even need a controller to play. Just move your hands and feet with gestures that the Kinect understands, and — voilà! — you’re kicking footballs, competing in dance challenges, and shooting down bad guys.

But now, one year since its launch, the Kinect has gone way beyond video games. It could change our retail buying experiences, and reinvent the way we shop.

A commercial version of the Kinect software development kit will be made available in early 2012, Microsoft announced on Monday, opening the door for businesses to create new applications for the popular platform.

“With the Kinect for Windows commercial program, Microsoft hopes that visionaries all over the globe will continue to transform the way we do things with new Kinect-enabled tools,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Wired.com in a statement. Microsoft is currently running a pilot program with more than 200 businesses across more than 20 countries, including partners like Toyota, textbook publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and digital advertising agency Razorfish.

If all goes as planned, we could see Kinect-based interactions show up at retailers, banks, automotive dealers and other commercial environments. Razorfish, for example, is looking at building kiosks in which customers’ bodies would be scanned in order to try on digital outfits without needing to take off any clothes — so said Razorfish VP of emerging tech Jonathan Hull in an interview with Kotaku. Other applications could include simpler tasks, such as waving one’s hands to navigate an ATM’s menu screens.

Microsoft previously released a non-commercial version of its Kinect SDK in June, encouraging hackers and open software enthusiasts to create off-beat, innovative applications that take advantage of the platform’s motion-sensing capabilities. From gimmicky motion controls for banking software to NSF grant-backed medical research, the non-commercial SDK spurred creative uses of the platform beyond what Microsoft expected.

Kinect first debuted in November of 2010 to much fanfare. The system eschews the traditional button-and-joystick controller scheme, and instead lets users navigate and play games via hands-free motion capture. The system was an instant hit, setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest-selling consumer device ever in the first few days after its release. In March, Microsoft announced it had sold more than 10 million Kinect devices.

Though the hands-free controller has been a fun novelty for gaming enthusiasts, the Kinect’s utility for hardware-modding enthusiasts has been more compelling. The Xbox peripheral is packed with a bevy of sophisticated motion-capturing instruments, including an infrared light emitter to capture the surfaces of items in a room, and a depth camera that builds a 3D model of all the objects captured by infrared.

The Kinect’s relatively low $150 price tag has been even more attractive for budding DIY-ers. Willow Garage — the Silicon Valley robotics outfit known for its robot control operating system — now offers a $500 open-source robotics kit that incorporates the Kinect. The company’s previous version (also pre-Kinect) cost $280,000.

The initial forays into Kinect modification began with the homebrew modding community, spurring a wave of creative software hacks that ranged from Street Fighter games to the intricacies of “boob physics.” (Yes, really.)

Instead of taking action against the hackers or trying to bar hardware nerds from further Kinect mods, Microsoft encouraged development, promising to eventually release SDKs to new segments of would-be Kinect hackers. “Kinect represents the first incarnation of the next big thing in computing — a world where computing is becoming more natural and intuitive,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Bloomberg Businessweek in a statement.

Kinect’s natural progression is to move into the commercial realm. Much like app developers for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, the release of the commercial SDK allows third parties to use Microsoft’s technology in bolstering their own brands and services. Partners, however, would use Microsoft’s hardware to augment their own businesses — this rather than providing content to a centralized store. In return, Microsoft would open itself up to untold numbers of potential new hardware purchasing partners.

David Dennis, group program manager of Microsoft’s Xbox team, told Kotaku that Kinect devices could be sold in bulk numbers — the “tens of thousands” — to partner businesses.

Microsoft hasn’t released any hard details on the commercial SDK’s release date beyond “early next year.” So don’t expect to start waving on digital fashion accessories right away.

CyanogenMod 7.1 brings support for Xperias and 20 other handsets

All it took was a little love from Sony Ericsson and now CyanogenMod’s latest official release includes support for a happy cohort of 2011 Xperias as well as the X8. The same goes for Samsung, which doled out a free GSII and some employment and now finds that the Galaxy smartphones are on version 7.1’s list too. Arduino-powered modder recreates ‘first PC’

Before the Altair 8800, before the SCElBI, there was the Kenbak-1 — considered to be the first personal computer by the Computer History Museum. Designed in 1970, it used Transistor-Transistor logic instead of a microprocessor — which is one of the reasons only 40 of the units were ever sold, of which 14 are known to still exist today. That’s what prompted modder funnypolynomial to produce his own using an Arduino. It may look a little more functional than the gloriously retro hexagonal design of the original, but it wouldn’t take much to copy that look, too. What are you waiting for? Harrison Krix may never actually be invited to join Daft Punk, but at the very least, he’ll likely have the coolest Halloween costume in the room for pretty much the rest of his life. Keeping an eye on your server health isn’t the most romantic of pastimes. That’s what compelled modder mkanoap to build a computer-free monitoring system that was as cheerily simple as Xymon’s red-yellow-green symbols. His solution? On one hand, the cubicle creativity factor just has to be commended, but on the other, we’re guessing it’s not an entirely selfless endeavor — it’s not exactly enthralling answering those system status calls, you know? Play Wii games on your Android tablet via network streaming (video)

In case you haven’t met him already, Obiwan222222 represents the minimalist alternative to hardcore modding. He’s already shown us Wii games running on the PSP and iPod Touch, and now he’s pulled off the same trick on his Asus Transformer. It’s all done with network streaming: he loads up Super Mario Galaxy 2 on his PC using the open-source Dolphin emulator and then transmits it to his tablet via the Splashtop HD remote desktop app for Android. He also throws in an Xbox 360 controller to make things look more confusing than they really are. We’d obviously worry about lag with this type of setup, but the video after the break makes it look just about playable.

Xbox 360 modders claim CPU hack, make it party like an N64 (video)

The security system built into the 360’s motherboard has more layers than an onion, which is why previous hacks have generally focused on the optical drive instead. But a couple of circuit breakers named Gligli and Tiros claim to have finally freed up the console’s CPU, allowing all 360 variants to boot homebrew software while also making them invulnerable to patches sent out by Microsoft. The video after the break purports to show the fruits of their labor, including an N64 emulator running on a version of Linux. It doesn’t really prove anything, except perhaps the lengths these guys have gone to: they use various hardware tools to slow down the console’s CPU and then confuse it with so-called ‘glitch’ pulses in an effort to make it forget its normal boot-up checks. Certainly not a trick for the average F-Zero X racer, particularly when speed-boosting around copy protection like this may be shady in the eyes of the law. (One more thing: don’t be put off by the video’s soundtrack — starts out weird but gets better, baby.)

Popular Android Mod Creator Jumps to Samsung

The creator of one of the most popular Android software mod programs is now an employee of one of the largest Android smartphone manufacturers in the world.

Samsung Mobile has recruited Steve Kondik, creator of the highly popular CyanogenMod software, to work as a software engineer for the company.

“I will be working on making Android more awesome,” Kondik wrote to tech blog AndroidandMe.

A Samsung spokesman confirmed Kondik’s new employee status, but could not provide further details on the modder’s position or duties.

Kondik refused a request for further comment. According to a screenshot of Kondik’s Facebook page, however, his CyanogenMod software side project won’t be a part of his new gig at Samsung.

For phone geeks, one of the biggest draws to Google’s platform is Android’s customizability. As Android emerged as the true competitor to Apple’s iPhone over the past two years, the platform’s “openness” became one of Google’s main selling points. Unlike iOS, Android is available under an open-source software license, which means anyone who wishes to see the code behind the software can do so.

Kondik’s CyanogenMod software was a perfect fit for Android. Essentially, CyanogenMod replaces the stock Android software with a custom build, allowing for adjustments to your phone that you wouldn’t be able to make otherwise. From custom wallpaper to wireless tethering to even CPU overclocking, CyanogenMod became the official program for phone hackers since it was first released in 2009.

While Kondik says CyanogenMod and Samsung won’t have anything to do with one another, it’s easy to think his background in user interface tweaking and phone customization will influence Samsung’s software design. Especially after the company sent Kondik and a number of other CyanogenMod hackers free Galaxy S2 handsets well before the wide release of the phone.

And Samsung has proved willing to experiment with its own Android software interface. The company’s TouchWiz UI is also a custom version of Android, markedly different than the stock versions that come on other phones. In hiring Kondik, the company may go further with tricking out its own flavor of Google’s mobile platform.
