Twelve South, the same South Carolina-based outfit that’s been keeping the Bass(Jump) coming, has just outed the best MacBook power adapter accessory… ever. Almost. The PlugBug is an iPad / iPhone / iPod / USB-based-whatever charger that snaps right on top of your existing MacBook or MacBook Pro AC adapter, allowing you to charge your Mac laptop as well as a single USB-based device at the same time. It’s a ten-watt adapter, so your iPad and those other high-powered gizmos should take take to it just fine, and it’s actually capable of acting on its own should you ever need to dismount it. Unfortunately, those in need of a non-US adapter will be out of luck, but on the upside, this converts international adapters for US use should you head over this way. It’s on sale now for $34.99 at the source link below, and if it only had more than one USB port, we’d recommend it without hesitation. Ah well — there’s always version 2.0, right? The Nyko Power Pak+ does an admirable job of keeping Nintendo’s 3DS out of the red, but what if you want an extended battery that won’t fit in your pocket? Look no further than CTA Digital’s Deluxe Power Grip, the 3DS cradle that doubles your console’s bulk to match its newly extended battery life. The grip’s form mimics that of an Xbox 360 controller, replete with a 2600mAh battery pack and a game-card storing kickstand. The peripheral’s grips seem to lend better access to the handheld’s awkwardly positioned D-pad, but its real triumph comes in the option to charge the unit via USB; folks looking for a standardized charging solution can kick Nintendo’s official AC adapter to the curb. Guess what, Wintel loyalists? “Apple’s” Thunderbolt I/O port is coming your way. If you’ll recall, Thunderbolt was actually built with Intel’s collaboration (Light Peak, anyone?), and sensibly, the chip giant is now making it possible for the port to appear on non-Mac machines. The news was just broken here at IDF, where a Haswell-based machine was briefly teased with a heretofore unpossible T-bolt port. Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, was on-stage to showcase six pre-production Ultrabook designs (all based on 3rd generation Intel Core processors), but stopped short of telling us exactly when the Thunderbolt I/O port would make its debut on commercially available rigs (Acer and ASUS are onboard for a 2012 launch!). Naturally, we’re hoping it’s sooner (tomorrow) rather than later (the 2013 launch of Haswell).

We’re sure there’s at least one person out there who has been itching to shoot boat-loads of video with their iPad 2. Perhaps even a short film or two. Sure, Elgato already has an app that lets you stream TV to your iPad — but that’s only if they’re being broadcast online. To pull in live TV over the air you’d need a TV-tuner, something that has, until now, been unavailable for Apple’s popular slate. By the end of September that lack of broadcast television will become just a distant memory with the release of EyeTV Mobile, a £100 (about $163) dongle that connects to the iPad’s proprietary port. The tuner will be able to pull in MPEG 2 streams over DVB-T, but won’t work with DVB-T2 broadcasts like Freeview HD. Check out the source for more details.
