Hori’s PS3 MMO Controller is large and in charge

Hori's PS3 MMO Controller is large and in charge

With a name like “PS3 MMO Controller” there’s probably not much more that you need to know about this monstrous creation from Hori. It isn’t exactly Final Fantasy themed, but seems to be targeted for those who will be chocobo breeding in XIV. Its main component is, of course, the big white keyboard, but there’s also that extension on the left side, replicating the left portion of a Dual Shock and looking like something found on a Battlestar Galactica set (the original, natch). On the right side of the keyboard lies the other analog stick and full complement of buttons. We’re thinking we’d rather tackle the denizens of hell for real than attempt God of War 3 with this thing, but for the massive crowd it should do quite well — whenever it actually ships. Hori didn’t have a price in mine just yet either.

Developer gets Sony’s Remote Play working on non-VAIO machines

Developers get Sony's RemotePlay working on non-Vaio machines

Sony has been teasing its Remote Play functionality to a few devices, including the Aino and its VAIO laptops, but if your possession of Sony gadgets doesn’t extend beyond your home entertainment center you’ve been out of luck. Not any more, courtesy of a developer who goes by the handle NTAuthority, who has managed to get Remote Play to work on any machine — any machine that can run Windows 7, at least. NTAuthority’s patch allows Sony’s VAIO Remote Play app to run on non-VAIOs, and from the reports we’re seeing in forums it even works on a Windows VMware instance hosted on a Mac. That 400kb patch is on the other end of that source link below, so if you feel like giving it a shot it at least it won’t take long to download.

DualShock can be used in lieu of Navigation Controller

Remember that rumor a couple years back of PS3 motion control gaming being based around a pull-apart DualShock 3? Well, perhaps it wasn’t such a wild idea after all. No DualShock 3s have been harmed in the making of Move, but Joystiq has just confirmed that you can actually use the existing controller for Move gaming instead of springing for the Navigation Controller if you’d like. Obviously, you’ll be one-handing the DualShock, not quite as comfortable as the Move’s tiny, dedicated quasi-nunchuck, but it saves you $30 for your hassle. You’ll only have access to the d-pad or four face buttons, depending on which side you choose, but interestingly, the Nav Controller’s X and O buttons are redundant with the full Move wand, so hopefully this won’t impact gameplay too greatly.

Sony PlayStation Move hands on at E3: these lollypops don’t lie

Sony’s PlayStation Move was hardly the surprise of the show, after all we’ve been seeing it waved around in various forms for years. Likewise the price ($99 for a bundle with an Eye Toy camera and a game) wasn’t exactly a shocker. Still, the release date of September 19th is earlier than anticipated, and the wealth of titles supporting the gadgets was a little unexpected too. We had a chance to sit down (and stand up) with a few of the best, and we’re generally pleased. Move on after the break for our full impressions.

PlayStation 3 in 3D impressions: almost, but not quite

There are plenty of opinions to be had on 3D, and while many of the staff at Engadget could take it or leave it, this particular writer is a pretty firm fan of the concept. Notice the word “concept.” 3D is hard to pull off well. We’ve all had to come to grips with the dimming effect of most 3D tech, due to the fact that we’re only seeing about half the potential brightness of a display, and 3D gaming presents a whole different ream of problems. Follow after the break as we walk through some of our experiences with the PlayStation 3 in 3D and see if it can measure up to our hopes and dreams for a world with one extra dimension.

Nyko charge base for PlayStation Move available for pre-order

Yes, it looks like the PlayStation Move accessories are starting to trickle in. While we’re still lusting after the shooting attachment, we do realize the need for more modest hardware such as that supplied by Nyko. The Charge Station is a pretty straightforward affair: it features four ports for powering up as many Motion Controllers and / or Navigation Controllers, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon for $20. On a related note, we can’t wait to see what CTA comes up with for its Move accessories. We hope there are some Sony-compatible wings in our future!

PlayStation Move bundle up for pre-order at Best Buy and GameStop

We’re sure every other retailer in the world will have PlayStation Move orders up in the next week or so, but Best Buy and GameStop are leading the charge: the $99 Move bundle that include the PS Eye, a Move controller and Sports Champions is now available for pre-order, with an estimated delivery date between November 1st and the 6th — just a little bit after the announced September 19th launch date. We’re sure that’ll be revised as things get firmed up, though. So, what’s it going to be? Considering we’re still guessing at Microsoft’s final Kinect pricing, we’d say the decision’s a tough one, but honestly, you know we’re totally buying all of this stuff and having an all-night dance off.

[Thanks, William]

Sony Surround Sound System gives your PS3 a matching soundbar for $199

Lookie here — Sony’s snuck in one more announcement after today’s E3 press conference: this fall it’s unveiling an all-in-one Surround Sound System for the PlayStation 3. It will go on sale worldwide for $199 / €199 / ¥19,800 and accepts audio via optical or analog inputs — no HDMI 1.4 here — and supports Dolby digital, DTS, MPEG-2 AAC and Linear PCM audio formats. The company has established its S-Force PRO Front Surround technology that promises realistic surround sound without the additional speakers in its HT-CT150 and HT-CT350 soundbar systems, but those include a separate subwoofer, HDMI and retail for $100 and $200 more, respectively. Those shortcomings make it doubtful audiophiles will look twice, but for an easy dormroom or bedroom upgrade this CECH-ZVS1 could easily do the trick. Specs are after the break.

Sony announcing PS3 bundles with more storage, faster WiFi, and Move?

Sony announcing PS3 bundles with more storage, faster WiFi, and Move? We’re just a day away from Sony’s official press conference at this year’s E3, and CVG has heard rumors from a supposedly reliable source that some refreshed PS3 bundles are on the docket for officialdom. Word is that the new PS3s will pack 802.11n WiFi (up from 802.11b/g currently) and will come in 250 and 500GB flavors. Both bundles are said to be coming with at least one Move controller included, a move (zing!) that Sony had already said it would make, but the word of faster WiFi flies in the face of last week’s FCC filing for new bundles still offering only 802.11b/g. So, will a new 802.11n-equipped model become the standard edition, or does this “industry source” not have a clue? We’ll find out tomorrow.

Update: Looks as if Sony has updated Move’s official online portal with a slew of working titles. Have a peek while we get ready for the full reveal at E3, won’t you? Thanks, Tiaan!

TwistDock is the PS3 organizer for M. Night Shyamalan fans

TwistDock is the PS3 dock for M. Night Shyamalan fans

Looking for a dock… with a twist? Frankly we weren’t either, but that didn’t stop us from being intrigued by the aptly titled TwistDock for the PS3 from Vogel’s, a docking station for a console that we didn’t think needed one. On the front the TwistDock houses a PS3, either original or Slim, and on the back (here comes the twist) two controllers can be slotted in and charged, shown after the break. There’s also a USB hub for connecting other goods and overall it pledges to keep your layout “clean, stylish and sexy.” That would be lovely progression from our current entertainment center’s “dusty, cluttered and tangly” label. Can it deliver? It’s on display at this year’s E3, and we’ll go see for ourselves.
