Engadget HD Podcast 272 – 11.01.2011

A year after its debut, Google TV is finally getting a fresh UI, its first taste of Market apps, and all-new Honeycomb underpinnings, so naturally that gets most of our attention this week. Of course, it seems like everyone is doing what they can to shake up the TV industry, putting Sony, Roku, Plex, Microsoft, DirecTV, and Redbox in the news as well. The one common thread joining these companies is that they can’t do it without content, and it appears Warner Bros. and other studios may be locking the windowing gates tighter than ever. After all of that, we’ll dig into what we have been and will be watching, so press play and see if you agree with our choices this week.

Engadget HD Podcast 271 – 10.25.2011

Now that Netflix has revealed exactly how many subscribers it has lost over the last few months, we’re wondering what’s next for the video service and its competitors like Amazon. In other pay-TV news, we have an upgraded UI on the way from DirecTV and new social media hooks from AT&T that could signal a change in the way we watch TV. Before closing things out with our picks of what to watch this week, we even had some time for new ultra HDTV standards, mobile app consolidation for FiOS and Sony’s PlayStation 3D Display.

Engadget Mobile Podcast 109 – 10.23.2011

We get excited. More specifically, we get excited about phones. Most specifically, we get excited about dead mobile phone platforms and the hardware they inhabit. Does that make us weird? We would say yes, but combine that with the fact that we also get excited about very alive, very dessert-influenced mobile platforms and you’ll have us giving ourselves a “5” on the scale of totally weird to not weird at all. As usual, we’re a 10 on the exciting/excitement scale, so check it out: the 109th edition of the Engadget Mobile Podcast.

Gadget Lab Podcast: Ice Cream Sandwich, Nokia and Apple Updates

On this week’s Gadget Lab podcast, the crew talks shop about Google’s recent Android updates, a new Nokia phone and, of course, the obligatory week in Apple news and rumors.

First up, staff writer Mike Isaac and product reviews editor Michael Calore kick off the show with tasty news about Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of the Android mobile platform. We recently played with the new Android OS running on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone, and can tell you it’s the best Android version yet.

Next, the two Mikes discuss another smartphone, the obscure yet playfully adorned Nokia’s N9. While the N9 itself is easy on the eyes, its Meego operating system is just this close to obsolescence.

Finally, staff writer Christina Bonnington stops by to chat about Apple. The company has announced an unlikely fourth U.S. carrier for the iPhone, and it’s not T-Mobile, but rather C-Spire Wireless, which provides coverage to a number of Southern states. Perhaps Apple is trying to hone in on territories that aren’t covered well by AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. Or maybe Apple just likes the South.

Christina finishes the show off by debunking rumors of an imminent smaller, 7-inch iPad. A mini iPad is unlikely for a number of reasons, she says, including complete disinterest on the part of Steve Jobs himself.

Engadget HD Podcast 270 – 10.18.2011

Even though it’s been a week that’s all about cellphones, there’s still plenty of HD news to decipher, from last week’s comments to our review of the Logitech Harmony Link. If you know us, you know Harmony = rant, but you’ll probably want to tune in just to see where Logitech’s latest effort to connect all our devices simply succeeds, and where it failed, failed and failed again. Apple, Intel, Boxee, Google, Roku, Slingbox and Crestron are all other names coming at the connected living room from a different angle and unsurprisingly, they’re all here. Give a listen to find out what they’re up to, plus our picks of what to watch on your HDTV this week.

Gadget Lab Podcast: iPhone 4S, Krypton Laser and the Grid 10 Tablet

This week on the Gadget Lab Podcast: The gang talks about the brand spankin’ new iPhone 4S and checks out a powerful laser from Wicked Lasers, some great gear for fun at the park, and a funky 10-inch Android tablet called the Grid 10.

Our show opens with reviews editor Michael Calore and Gadget Lab editor Jon Phillips talking about all the excitement surrounding the iPhone 4S, which officially launched today. Jon can’t wait to check out Siri and start dictating his text messages.

The duo then break out to a wicked ant-killing, plastic-melting device called the Krypton Laser. The 1-watt laser is so powerful it can shoot its beam up to 85 miles away, and can light a match on fire. Careful not to burn yourself, or, you know… blind someone.

Then we take a trip out to the park where Wired product reviews contributor Billy Brown demos a few products that will make your outdoor experience far more enjoyable: the ENO DoubleNest Hammock and the Stanley Nineteen13 Carbonated Drink Bottle. Finally: a way to relax and drink a beer without worrying about spilling it everywhere.

We finish off the episode with Michael and staff writer Christina Bonnington taking a look at Fusion Garage’s Grid 10 tablet, which will be getting a final software update in the coming weeks. It’s got an interesting grid-based user-interface that’s not quite as intuitive as those of other tablets, but the price point can’t be beat for a tablet that size.
