iTunes App Store Price Increase Begin To Takes Effect

apple-app-store-ozYes, we brought you word not too long ago that Apple would be revising the pricing system for its iTunes App Store in Europe, Canada, Iceland, Norway and Russia, and it looks as though the price revision has starting to take effect. Forthose who happen to reside in Europe or Canada, you would most probably have woken up to see prices of apps inflated, much to your dismay.

These price increases have been made to reflect changes in VAT and foreign exchange rates. Now that they are starting to take effect across the board as mentioned, folks living in the UK would see a 10 pence rise for the cheapest premium apps, which would mean bidding goodbye to previous £0.69 prices and saying hello to £0.79 price tags.

Other folks in the EU will be greeted by a new €0.99 starting price, while the minimum amount that one spend on the iTunes App Store would be $1.19 – meaning you can’t get much for a (Canadian) dollar anymore as the $0.99 price tag has been relegated to the history bin, and so too will folks at Norway who trade with the Norwegian krone see a similar increase in price. As for Russia, it remains to be seen just how high of a price increase will happen taking into consideration the beleaguered ruble in recent times.

Jide’s Remix Tablet Is An Android-powered Surface Lookalike

Jide-Ultra-Remix-Tabet-2Microsoft’s Surface tablets are actually some pretty nicely designed devices, but if you wanted such a tablet minus the Windows operating system, you’re in luck thanks to a trio of ex-Googlers who have created the Remix tablet. The company they formed is called Jide and the tablet they have created is the Remix, which based on the photos looks like a Surface-lookalike.

The tablet packs some pretty impressive hardware under the hood as it will feature an 11.6-inch Full HD display and will be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4+1 A15 chipset. It will be accompanied by 2GB of RAM, 16/64GB of storage, and will also come with a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, a 8,100mAh battery, and the usual connectivity options.

It will also come with a keyboard accessory that will attach to the tablet via magnets and will also act as a cover. It even comes with a magnetic charging port all in which seems like they have combined the best features from the Microsoft Surface and Apple’s MacBooks. The software that comes with the tablet is Android, but it is called Remix OS which is based on Android 4.4.2 that looks remarkably like Windows.

Priced at $349 for the 16GB model and $449 for the 64GB model, the company expects the tablet to go on sale in China first followed by the US and UK markets in the second and third quarter of the year.

5 NYC Uber Hubs Suspended Until Records Were Handed Over

nyc-uber-hubThose living in New York City who love to use the ridesharing service known as Uber enjoy the convenience of hailing a driver directly from the smartphone, being able to obtain a lift at any time. It must be said that many governments all over are not too thrilled with the idea, and countries such as Taiwan and Spain have issued bans. Not so in the US, but the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) are not too happy about how the business is being run though. It seems that the most recent run-in was attributed to a decision by New York’s Taxi and Limousine Tribunal closing down five of Uber’s six bases in NYC on a temporary basis because Uber did not submit trip data to the organization.

Regulations in NYC require each of the company’s drivers to be affiliated with one of these bases, which happen to be licensed by the TLC. The function would be similar to that of dispatchers, and as long as one of them remains open, the service will continue to function.

Among the information requested included the likes of “date of trip, time of trip, pick up location, and license numbers” that range from April 1 to September 20, 2014, which is what the ruling entails. Legal eagles for the bases claimed that such information would divulge trade secrets, and needless to say, the hearing officer did not agree from that perspective, fining each one $200 while suspending them from operating until the requested information is handed over.

The shutdown lasted just a while, as a couple of days after the ruling saw all five bases being operational. Uber has already filed an appeal, and prior to any other decision, it would be business as usual in these locations.

Next iOS 8 Update Rumored For Release Next Week

ios-8.1-mainBack in December, Apple released iOS 8.1.2 for iOS devices. This is an update that came with the usual bug fixes and improvements, although if there was one area that the update didn’t address, it was the fact that it did not seem to address any of the battery woes from before. We had heard that iOS 8.1.3 was in the works, and it looks like it could be released next week.

According to the folks at BGR, they have heard that Apple could be planning on releasing the next iOS update sometime next week. Their source has informed them that the update is coming, although they did not mention if this might be a beta seed or a public release, so it is possible that its release could only be for developers.

It is unclear if the next update will be iOS 8.1.3 or if it could be a major one that might bump it to iOS 8.2, but chances are we could be looking at a smaller update for now. Their source has informed them that the update should be arriving either on a Tuesday or Wednesday, so we guess we’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled for more information.

In the meantime we can only hope that the update Apple is planning on releasing will address some of the bugs and problems plaguing iOS 8 at the moment, like the battery issue we have mentioned above, and hopefully we can avoid another fiasco like iOS 8.0.1.

popSlate Case Gives Your iPhone 6 An E-Paper Secondary Display

Some of you guys might recall that back in 2012, we reported on an iPhone case called the popSlate. This is basically a cover for the iPhone that gives it an e-paper display on the back of the phone, which is essentially a secondary display for iPhone users. Well the good news is that if you wanted the popSlate but for your iPhone 6, you’re in luck.

The company has recently introduced the popSlate which has been designed for the iPhone 6. Unfortunately there does not appear to be a model for the iPhone 6 Plus yet, so perhaps that might show up later. The popSlate will allow users to permanently show off an image of their choosing on the back of their phone via the e-paper display.

Alternatively the e-paper display will also allow the phone to display notifications that will help save you battery as it will not use the more battery-draining main display of your phone. Heck, it will even be able to display a digital boarding pass, so if you’re a frequent traveller, this might come in handy.

The company claims that the display should last users a week before requiring a recharge which is pretty impressive. It is priced at $129 so if you’d like to learn more or perhaps order one for yourself, head on over to its website for the details.

Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Ends Its Run

google-samsung-galaxy-s4

Over the past year several Google Play Edition devices have ended their run on the Google Play Store, devices included the likes of HTC One (M7), Xperia Z Ultra, Moto G and even the LG G Pad 8.3, and now its the end of the road for Samsung’s Galaxy S4. The Google Play Edition of this smartphone is no longer available for purchase from the Google Play Store, it had already been out of stock for quite some time now.

There are no major differences between a Google Play Edition device and its counterparts. GPE devices offer stock Android experience as opposed to the custom skins that OEMs throw on top of their devices, and they’re also the next in line for new Android updates after Google’s own Nexus smartphones and tablets receive them.

Customers who are looking for a stock Android experience and quick updates in a package that’s not carrier locked and can be purchased outright can go with Google Play Edition devices.

Only the HTC One (M8) GPE is available for purchase from the Google Play Store. All of the others have disappeared, including the Samsung Galaxy S4. The other devices being sold through Google Play Store right now include Nexus 9, Nexus 6 and the Nexus 5.

No word as yet from Google when new GPE devices will be added to the online store.

Spotify Won’t Be Supporting Google Cast Anytime Soon

spotify connectYou might recall that earlier this week, we reported on the Google Cast which is a new piece of technology that Google had announced. Essentially this is the Chromecast for music where users could beam their music from their devices onto Google Cast-enabled speakers, which we guess in some way is similar to Apple’s AirPlay as well.

This is great news for those who love to listen to music and control their playback wirelessly, but if you’re using a streaming service such as Spotify, you’re out of luck. The company has recently announced that they will not be support Google Cast anytime soon. Instead Spotify has chosen to focus on their “Spotify Connect” services instead.

The claim that by doing so, they will be able to own the technology from end-to-end to ensure that they are able to deliver the best experience possible. The good news is that at the moment Spotify already has a large backing of supported devices, so you don’t have to worry about being unable to find a device that supports its feature.

Thankfully it also appears that there are some Spotify Connect devices that will also work with Google Cast, so if you want to have the best of both worlds, you should be able to find a pair of speakers that will support both features.

Walkman-based Sony Xperia Z4 Music Rumored To Be In The Works

Sony-Xperia-Z2-06Many years ago in the age of the feature phone, Sony had launched a Walkman-specific phone where the emphasis was placed on the music playback capabilities. However once Sony entered into the smartphone market, the distinction was lost. However according to new rumors, Sony could be thinking about launching a Walkman-based smartphone in the near future.

The device has been tentatively dubbed the Sony Xperia Z4 Music. Presumably this is a phone that will share at least some of the upcoming Xperia Z4’s specs, except that there will be an emphasis placed on its music playback capabilities. What does this mean? Well for starters the rumors claim that it will be able to support a wider range of codecs out of the box.

It will also feature front-facing surround speakers made by S-Force Pro. Oddly enough the screen of the Xperia Z4 Music will be that of a 4-inch display and its resolution is nowhere near the rumored QHD resolution of the Xperia Z4. However it will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset which means that it is no slouch.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but given that we’ve seen Sony’s renewed attempts at recreating the Walkman, perhaps a Walkman-inspired Xperia phone might not be that much of a stretch. MWC 2015 is kicking off in the next couple of months so do check back with us then for more info.

VivaLnk Unveils eSkin Thermometer Wearable

NFCstickerLast year VivaLnk unveiled a digital tattoo in which users would be able to unlock their Moto X handset with. Safe to say that company’s technology has a lot of potential and during CES 2015, the company took the wraps off an eSkin Thermometer. The concept is similar to that of the digital tattoo, which is that users will be able to stick the eSkin Thermometer on their bodies.

The sticker comes in the form of a cute bear so that it doesn’t look too geeky and will be great for use with children who might be a bit fussy when it comes to things like this. The sticker itself features NFC technology and in order to check the temperature of the wearer, all they’d have to do is bring their phone (an NFC-enabled phone) close to the sticker in order to read its data.

We’ve seen low-tech versions of such fever-monitoring stickers, but presumably the eSkin Thermometer will eventually open up the door to more health-based wearables and monitoring devices. According to VivaLnk, the sticker will last about 15 days and is washable, so you could basically stick it on yourself or your child for the duration of their sickness without having to constantly change it.

The company expects to release the eSkin Thermometer in the spring of 2015 where they are hoping to price it at around $15-$20 for a pack of three.

Windows 10 Spartan Browser Screenshots Leaked

windows-10-spartan-1

Over the past few weeks it has come to be known that Microsoft is building a completely new web browser that will be introduced with Windows 10. This new browser is said to have the codename “Spartan.” Several reports have been published during this time which talk about the features and user interface that this browser is expected to bring. Now some screenshots of the Windows 10 Spartan browser have been leaked online by a Chinese publication.

windows-10-spartan-2

The screenshots affirm what we have read in most reports so far. Spartan’s user interface is clean and much more similar to Chrome and Firefox than Internet Explorer’s ever was. Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual private assistant, is integrated within the web browser itself and can be accessed through the URL bar.

One of the screenshots also shows a dark theme for Windows 10. It may only be an initial concept for now though so its possible that Microsoft might make further changes to the user interface before a final version is unveiled for the public.

Microsoft has an event scheduled for January 21st where it is expected to unveil the final consumer version of Windows 10. It may even show off Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets at this event, the iteration hasn’t been seen in many leaks up till now, so its will be interesting to see what Microsoft’s next iteration of Windows looks like on mobile devices.
