GM’s $30,000 Electric Chevrolet Bolt Breaks Cover Next Week

general-motors-logo

Tesla has made a name for itself as the company that’s leading the way in bringing all electric cars into the mainstream. However there’s a problem. Tesla’s vehicles tend to be expensive and that’s one of the places where General Motors plans to undercut it. According to a new report General Motors will show off the all electric Chevrolet Bolt at the Detroit Auto Show next week, the car will cost $30,000.

Apart from the Bolt, the new 2016 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid with extended range will be unveiled at the auto show as well, so there will be plenty to see for electric car aficionados

According to The Wall Street Journal, which cited “people familiar with the strategy,” the Chevy Bolt is going to be capable of driving 200 miles on a single charge by 2017. A concept version of this vehicle will break cover on Monday at the Detroit Auto Show.

Its not like the Bolt will not have competition when it finally hits roads. Tesla’s Model 3 is under development as well, a budget all electric car, expected to go on sale in 2017 for $35,000. This should make for some interesting competition in the market and not to mention much needed choice for customers looking to purchase an electric car.

While Tesla’s vehicles haven’t made much inroads internationally GM reportedly has global aspirations for the Chevrolet Bolt, expecting it to compete in lucrative markets like China.

Windows 10 Spartan Browser Screenshots Leaked

windows-10-spartan-1

Over the past few weeks it has come to be known that Microsoft is building a completely new web browser that will be introduced with Windows 10. This new browser is said to have the codename “Spartan.” Several reports have been published during this time which talk about the features and user interface that this browser is expected to bring. Now some screenshots of the Windows 10 Spartan browser have been leaked online by a Chinese publication.

The screenshots affirm what we have read in most reports so far. Spartan’s user interface is clean and much more similar to Chrome and Firefox than Internet Explorer’s ever was. Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual private assistant, is integrated within the web browser itself and can be accessed through the URL bar.

One of the screenshots also shows a dark theme for Windows 10. It may only be an initial concept for now though so its possible that Microsoft might make further changes to the user interface before a final version is unveiled for the public.

Microsoft has an event scheduled for January 21st where it is expected to unveil the final consumer version of Windows 10. It may even show off Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets at this event, the iteration hasn’t been seen in many leaks up till now, so its will be interesting to see what Microsoft’s next iteration of Windows looks like on mobile devices.

Samsung Reportedly Manufacturing Processors For Apple Watch

samsung-sign-bgr

The love-hate relationship between Samsung and Apple has long been documented. Both companies have fought long and costly battles in court against each other over patent disputes, and it has been rumored countless times that Apple wants to shift its business away from Samsung. The Korean giant has long been a component manufacturer for Apple and that relationship looks set to continue. A new report claims Apple has awarded orders to Samsung for the production of processors meant for its first smartwatch, the Apple Watch.

Apple introduced its smartwatch last year and said that it would be available for purchase in early 2015. So far a confirmed release date has not been provided but speculation is that the Apple Watch will hit the market in March.

Citing industry sources Digitimes reports that Samsung has received orders for the production of 3,000-4,000 12-inch wafers monthly on its 28nm process technology from Apple, and that the process it builds will be hosted inside the S1 system-in-package that Apple talked about during the Apple Watch’s unveiling.

The S1 system-in-package reportedly consists of other components as well like NAND flash, mobile DRAM and various chips. SiP modules for the Apple Watch are said to be provided by Advanced Semiconductor Engineering.

Neither Samsung nor Apple have confirmed this report, which isn’t surprising at all, supply chain speculation rarely gets a response from the companies.

Google Now May Welcome Third-Party Services

google now bill

There’s no denying that Google Now is a powerful tool for Android users but it does have its limits. Users have little choice because they’re locked into Google’s own services and are unable to get more work done able with Now when they’re driving or are in a position where staring at the phone is a bit hard. It looks like Google is working on improving these aspects of Now, so reveals the teardown of the search app on Android.

AndroidPolice took the app apart to see if they could find any hints of how Google Now will be improved in the days to come. It was discovered that Google is currently toying around with a couple of new ideas which would certainly improve the service.

Some preliminary code was discovered which revealed that support for spoken notifications may be added at some point. This would mean that users could get Google Now to speak traffic warnings out loud and not have to stare at the screen, and potentially get distracted when they’re on the road.

It was also discovered that third-party services may be allowed to tap into Now. This would allow users to share stuff to networks like Twitter and Facebook, as well as third-party applications to display their own cards in Now.

Discovering code like this is nothing new and doesn’t necessarily mean that these features would be added at some point. The possibility exists but nothing can be said for sure at this point in time.

You Will Soon Be Able To Settle Restaurant Bills At Your Table

verifone-e355-mobile-terminal

There are many businesses that allow customers to pay using their mobile devices these days. Mobile-based payments services have grown substantially in the past couple of years, and just last year Apple came out with one of its own, so businesses have adopted the new systems so that their customers don’t go elsewhere. This is not the case with most restaurants, and other similar establishments though, but change is definitely around the corner.

Verifone has launched a new wireless terminal which would allow restaurants to accept mobile payment. The Payware Mobile e355 wireless terminal is portable so it can be brought right to the table. It can accept NFC transactions so services like Google Wallet and Apple Pay will both be compatible from the get go, among a host of others.

This means that patrons will not have to brandish their credit cards or even worry about having enough cash in hand to settle the bill. They’ll simply use mobile payment like they already do at places like drug stores.

There will be significant wait involved before this new terminal becomes commonplace. For starters Verifone will not be shipping e355 until this summer and even then patrons will have to wait for their favorite establishments to acquire the new Verifone terminal before they start accepting mobile payment.

New Samsung Windows Phone Devices Expected In 2015

samsung_logo

Windows Phone isn’t the operating system that’s most commonly associated with Samsung. Almost all of the company’s smartphones run on Android. It has been working on Tizen powered smartphones as well but they have no traction in the market as yet. The last Windows Phone to come out of Samsung was the ATIV SE, launched back in spring 2014, and even that was an exclusive for Verizon. A Korean publication claims Samsung now wants to cut reliance on Android and may very well launch new Windows Phone devices in 2015.

Sources that spoke to Korea Times say that Samsung is running pilot programs to test the stability of Windows 8.1 on its devices. An official directly involved with the process is quoted as saying that Samsung is “interested in promoting Windows mobiles.”

Apparently what’s holding Samsung back in fully committing to Windows Phone is the royalty dispute that’s currently ongoing between the company and Microsoft. The aforementioned official says if the litigation is sorted out Samsung will develop more Windows Phone handsets this year with an expected release around the third quarter of 2015.

It is unclear right now if Samsung is going to use existing handsets and offer them with Windows Phone instead of Android, much like the HTC One (M8) for Windows Phone, or if its going back to the drawing board. Perhaps we may see a bit of both.

Microsoft Studios Allows Users To Monetize Gameplay Footage

Halo_4_review_Volt

Gameplay videos are increasingly becoming popular. There is a dedicated community of people who create and watch such videos, and it continues to grow with each passing day. Microsoft Studios has seen this trend and adapted accordingly. It will now allow users to monetize gameplay footage provided that they agree to a couple of things.

The updated Microsoft Studios rules state that “a personal, non-exclusive, non-sublicenseable, non-transferable, revocable, limited license for you to use and display Game Content and to create derivative works based upon Game Content”.

This means that gamers will be allowed to create derivative creative work using gameplay footage, as well as music, screenshots and other content from the various gaming titles that belong to Microsoft Studios. Its not like this isn’t already being done but the change in formal policy gives it a legal cover.

Video creators will have to agree that they will not reverse engineer software to use content that’s objectionable and offensive. They will be allowed to make money off of those videos as well, only on YouTube and Twitch though, advertising on other platforms will not be allowed.

These new rules apply to all titles that are owned exclusively by Microsoft Studios with the exception of Minecraft. Mojang was acquired by Microsoft last year but so far the Minecraft brand guidelines remain the same as before.

Barnes & Noble Nook Sales Declined 55% During Holiday Season

galaxy-tab4-nook

The holiday season is usually one of the most lucrative times for many consumer electronics companies. That’s because shoppers are out in full force, picking up new things for themselves and as gifts for friends and family. Its no surprise that many companies see strongest sales during these weeks but the reality was different for Barnes and Noble it seems. As per a new report B&N Nook division’s sales dipped 55 percent during the holiday season.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Barnes & Noble’s Nook division saw sales decline by 55 percent during the nine weeks ending January 3rd. This period included Black Friday, a day known for record-breaking purchases of gadgets and gizmos, as well as Cyber Monday and Christmas.

The total revenue collected during this period stood at $56 million. Barnes & Noble also saw a decline in digital content sales, much like what happened with its Nook e-readers.

Last year Barnes & Noble launched two devices in collaboration with Samsung, the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook and Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 10.1. These devices have custom software from B&N while providing full access to Google’s services and the Play Store but clearly they were unable to bring in enough customers for the company’s Nook division.

Some analysts are now of the view that even if B&N wanted to sell off the Nook division it would have trouble seeing how the performance has decline in the recent past.

LG G2 Android 5.0 Update Video Pops Up

It may have been a few months since Google released Android 5.0 Lollipop but the new iteration of its operating system isn’t running on many devices out there. The latest Android distribution stats show that Lollipop hasn’t made many gains and KitKat remains at the top. One of the biggest reasons behind this is the fact that many of the most popular devices have yet to receive Lollipop, for example majority of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 users are still waiting, and so are those who possess the LG G2.

It merits mentioning here that LG was the first OEM to get this update out for its mobile device. The LG G3 received Android 5.0 Lollipop last year in select markets and now the focus is on LG G2.

A short video has been published online which shows LG G2 with Android 5.0 Lollipop installed. One can see that LG has carried over the user interface changes it made in the Lollipop update for G3 along with a few tweaks. This makes the overall user interface much better.

All of this comes second to the features and improvements that Lollipop itself brings and there’s no doubt that LG G2 owners are anxiously waiting to be able to take them for a spin.

So far LG hasn’t said when G2 owners can expect Android 5.0 Lollipop to land. Users in the U.S. may have to wait even longer once you factor in carrier delays.

Qualcomm puts SafeSwitch kill switch in Snapdragon 810

qualcomm-safeswitch“Kill switch” is the buzz phrase of lawmakers and security enforcers these days, at least when it comes to the issues of smartphone security and theft.
