Gameplay
Spore is definitely a new concept. I have never played anything like it and it was just blown away. Basically the game is separated into 5 separate sections with each section having its own goal which you need to complete to enable your creature to reach its final goal; galactic supremacy. The first stage is called the Cell stage; basically it’s like PacMan on steroids: eat or be eaten. Once you manage to evolve a brain it’s time to go on land and enter the Creature stage. Judging from your previous decision of whether you were a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore plays a major role in the types of evolution characteristic you can give your now land locked animal. Meet other player’s creatures and decide whether to befriend them or find a new buffet; however which ever you choose could ultimately change your future. Once you get smart enough to build a tribe it’s time for war or parties. Go and make friends with other tribes or conquer them for weapons. The fourth stage is the Civilization stage, here you main goal is global domination! Capture enemy cities until everyone marches under your banner. With the world yours it’s time to claim more by making a spaceship and set a voyager into the great unknown.
Game Features
You have the power – You decide how your creature will dominate the universe, whether it be through military supremacy, industrial take-over or religious propaganda; it all depends on the decisions you make from the beginning of the game.
Not just a creature creator – Although this is the main focus of the game, it’s not the only feature in the game. Design cities, spaceships, aircraft, ships and more, all of which you can utilize in your civilization.
Massive single player on-line – Yes that’s right Single player on-line! Everyone playing Spore can upload their creations to the new Sporepedia which allows other users to automatically download those creatures and allow the AI to use them against you in your universe. Of course, if you find you don’t like you can always delete it from your system.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- New technology. The Spore graphics engine gives the whole new definition of awesome. The game filters everything smoothly and makes you feel part of the action.
- Funny moments. Some of the stuff in game is just plain funny, whether it’s the creatures way of dancing, the crazy one legged hopping thing or the stupid cave creature damaging himself with a branch, it’s just endlessly entertaining.
- A whole new scale of EPIC. Seriously no other game can compete in the scale of Spore, at first it may look like small but when you zoom out and out and out eventually till you see where you are in the universe, you kind of get the idea of how small you really are.
Cons:
- Not multi player. Which can be annoying as you can’t really go head-to-head against other players to see whose creature is the best. You can only go against their AI driven creatures which can be stupid and some stages.
- SecuRom. The DMR anti-piracy installed with the game can be a nightmare to un-install and is known to cause driver problems for Vista users. However it does enable you to play the game without the CD.
