Battech rolls out long-lasting iPower SX solar charger

It’s getting increasingly more difficult for solar chargers to distinguish themselves from one another these days, but it looks like Battech’s new iPower SX has a few somewhat unique things going for it, the most notable of which is a beefier than usual 2200mAh battery (compared to 18000mAh or less on most other units). That should be enough to keep an iPod Classic going for a full 50 hours, as opposed to 18 hours using something like the Freeloader. The device also boasts a few other nifty touches like a battery status indicator (which all to often goes overlooked) and, like other similar devices, you can also simply top off the battery by plugging it into a USB port. No word on a release ’round here just yet, but folks in the UK can apparently pick one up right now for £40, or about $60.

Dealzmodo: One Year of Popular Mechanics for $5 [Magazines]

Whenever I fly, I go to the airport newsstand and pick up a few magazines…often in spite of already having a subscription because I’m a poor planner. Popular Mechanics is one of them. Now Hearst is having a $5 sale on one-year subscriptions of many of their magazines, including Pop Mech, along with Esquire, O The Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan…OK, I’ll cut this list off before it gets any girlier and leave you to stare at the awesome retro cover art. Motorola intros energy-saving D10, D11 digital cordless phones

They may not do something crazy like connect to the internet, but Motorola’s new D10 and D11 cordless phones do break some new ground in their own little way, with each boasting an eco mode that promises to automatically reduce power consumption based on how far the handsets are away from the base. To add a bit more green cred, Motorola also manufactured each of ’em using a minimum of 20% recycled material. Otherwise, you can expect the usual backlit display, 100-number phonebook, and speakerphone functionality from each, with a bit of SMS messaging and three-way calling thrown in on the D11 model. No word on a price just yet, but both should be available by the end of the month — in the UK, at least.

DOH! Homer Simpson Doorbell

homer-doorbell2jpg
If ‘ding dong’ no longer rings your bell, you can always upgrade [downgrade?] your doorbell for the Homer Simpson Talking Doorbell.

The package comes with a Homer bell featuring Homer’s mug and the words ‘Ding Dong’ and a receiver sculpted as Homer doing what he rarely does: sitting on his ass taking a well-earned break from a hard day’s graft.

It comes with the wall-fixings needed to install it, including a 23A doorbell battery, and once installed place the receiver somewhere you can hear it and wait for someone to call. There are 5 Homer phrases to snigger at:

How to Build an Igloo

A wonderfully illustrated guide to making snow shelters. How to build with snow, how to work with snow rather than against it, and what not to do. Amazingly informative, succinct and fun. This book is the kind of expert you dream of.

Nikon outs D3x in own Pro magazine

Uh, oops. Sorry Nikon but your D3x is now even less of a mystery. According to your own Pro magazine, the D3x will sport an FX-format, 24.5 megapixel sensor shooting 5fps at full resolution or 7fps at a reduced 10 megapixels. Nikon made a few other tweaks including an extended ISO 50-6400 range but the body design, AF, metering, and main functions remain the same as the D3. The only thing we need now is a price and confirmed release date. Back to you Nikon. One more shot detailing the features after the break, full details beyond the read link.

Has Stephen Fry Killed The Blackberry Storm [A Bit Of Fun]

stephen fry 1.jpgFor all his Ye Olde Worlde charm and love of knitted jumpers and tweed, Stephen Fry is a gadget freak and, every now and then, he gets to play with new devices and give his opinion. He’s particularly keen on smartphones. All of this is a good thing, unless you are the new Blackberry Storm which Fry recently took to pieces on Twitter. Here’s a few of the things he said:

“Been playing with the BB Storm. Shockingly bad. I mean embarrassingly awful. Such a disappointment. Rushed out unfinished. What a pity.

Yes, I blame n’works more than RIM. Problems are terrible lag: inaccurate t’screen, awful, slow and fiddly text input. I SO wanted to like it.

Plus the GPS maps won’t work – issue with BIS connections. I see from forums postings this is widespread in the UK. iPhone killer? Ha!”

Over at the BBC’s dot.life though, they felt that Fry’s comments – which are well-respected by smartphone lovers – could stop the Blackberry Storm’s UK advance. That’s probably a bit OTT, considering many phone buyers never even read a review, but Fry responded to the piece and this is what he said:

Meizu M8 unboxed before December 8th launch

Can you believe it? After two years and any number of missed targets, Meizu’s M8 cellphone is bound and determined to meet its November 30th 8 December launch date. As proof, they’ve shipped a first unit to China’s PConline for review. Hmm, white earbuds, charger, and USB cable… imagine that.

Gaze-controlled robot gets demoed on video

It’s hardly a new concept, but we’re not about to bemoan the appearance of another sight-controlled robot, especially one that seems to be as simple and effective as this one created by a team of researchers from the Technical University of Denmark and the IT University of Copenhagen. That simplicity begins with the LEGO NXT-G kit that the bot is based around, which gets paired with a webcam and a laptop that’s connected to the bot via Bluetooth, and to a desktop PC via WiFi. The PC comes into the picture with an eye-tracking system that lets folks control the robot as they watch the live feed from its webcam which, as you can see in the video after the break, appears to work remarkably well. The researchers apparently aren’t content with things just yet, however, and they’re already looking to use the system to control a wheelchair, and add some head-tracking to the mix for good mesure.
