LG’s BD300 next in line for HD Netflix streaming

Remember when we heard that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was just one of many boxes that would support HD Netflix streaming over the next few months? Yeah, well we get the impression that the first week in December will be the go-live date for a smattering of new units. Just hours after hearing that Samsung’s BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray decks would be receiving a free update to enable high-def Netflix support, along comes a strikingly similar release from LG tipping us off on a strikingly similar update for its BD300. Said BD player, which has supported Watch Instantly from day one, will also support HD streaming after a gratis firmware upgrade in “early December.” Mmm, we definitely like where this is headed.

BYK-mac Can Analyze and Match Your Car’s Paint Color Perfectly [Car Tech]

The worst part about having part of your car repainted is that if it’s more than a few years old, you can generally tell where the car was touched up because the paint match wasn’t perfect. Sometimes it’s because factory paint was used, but the paint on your car has faded over time. Other times it’s because they don’t make your car’s color anymore, and paint matching becomes an artform. But now, as The Economist writes, a European-funded collaboration between three companies has yielded the BYK-mac, a device you hold over any car’s paint, and it will tell you exactly how to recreate the color from scratch.

This device came to fruition because of EUREKA, an EU research agency that brought together Merck, a power player in the chemicals industry, AkzoNobel, one of the world’s biggest paint producers, and BYK-Gardner, a firm that makes quality control equipment. Together, they were able to produce the BYK-mac, which has a database of more than 100,000 colors to work with.

The device has a spectrometer that not only analyzes color, but also can pick apart the texture of any paint. Texture is referred to as paint components that affect the appearance, but not necessarily the color—most of the time these are the glittery or sparkle effects in the paint, which can change the appearance of a paint job depending on what angle you view it at. All these colors and textures in the database of the BYK-mac have mathematical values attached to them, and fiddles around with all these different colors until it can match what it reads in the spectrometer perfectly.

The Economist also writes that paint matching is much more difficult these days because the complexity of how car paint is made and how it’s applied has increased significantly. Even using a stock paint, applying paint in the wrong direction can make it look mismatched. In any case, there’s no mention of when this will leak into the public sector, but seeing as they have a working prototype, I’d assume we’d see it sooner rather than later. [The Economist]

iPhone 3G Ad Gets Banned in the UK for Being Too Fast [Apple]

After banning an Apple iPhone ad earlier this year, the British Advertising Standards Authority has pulled out another one that glossed over how “really really” fast the new iPhone 3G is. As the demo shows, “really fast” is not as fast as Apple shows in their ad. In fact, as any iPhone user knows, any similarities between reality and those iPhone ads is a coincidence, which is exactly why it got banned in the UK. Shouldn’t these ads be banned here for being completely misleading too? [PC Pro]

Imagination Technologies said to have signed on with Sony for PSP successor

Well, this is certainly interesting. While Imagination Technologies itself isn’t going any further than to say that it has signed a licensing deal with a “major international consumer electronics company,” EETimes.com is reporting that the company in question is, in fact, Sony, and that the deal concerns Imagination’s PowerVR architecture being used in the successor to the PSP. More specifically, according to EETimes’ unnamed sources, the PSP 2 will be using Imagination’s SGX55x core, which itself, of course, still hasn’t been officially announced either. As EETimes notes, if that turns out to be the case, it would certainly be quite the coup for Imagination, especially considering that its PowerVR MBX technology has already found its way into the iPhone, among other devices.
