Revamped Sling.com Launches to Spendthrift Public [Websites]

Sling.com has been in closed beta for some time, but now the Huluesque service is open to the public. The site includes 60 other content partners including networks like FOX and CBS and studios like MGM and Sony. And while you wouldn’t expect to see any NBC content on there, you can actually watch shows like 30 Rock that are badged with a Hulu logo. My first reaction is that Sling’s quality leaves something to be desired, but I certainly can’t complain about the price. [Sling via AlleyInsider]

New Medion Satnav Offers Bags Of Features At A Low Price

MedionGoPalp5430.jpg

Medion is a good choice for solid and reliable, if a little uninspiring, in-car satnav devices and is updating its range with the new GoPal P5430.

This little number will suit those who find smaller, budget alternatives a bit difficult to manage since it sports a large 5″ widescreen display and full maps of Europe are preinstalled.

Atari 2600 Crammed Into Sega Game Gear Is Wonderfully Backwards Mod [Modding]

An awkward cross-breed time-travelling mongrel is a fairly fitting description for this mod that’s jammed an Atari 2600 emulator into the shell of a Sega Game Gear. Sure, it’s not the prettiest of mods, but taking the ’80s-era Atari and squishing it into the ’90s-era Sega took some tricky work: it has a built-in 40-game Atari chip, and can actually take 2600 carts into a slot on the back. The resulting “Atari Game 2600” has a 2.5-inch screen and can go for 7-8 hours on AA batteries, which seems pretty impressive. [Ben Heck via Technabob]

Lenovo’s nixed ThinkPad Secure hard drive prototypes caught hanging out together

Just a few days back we got our first look at Lenovo’s ThinkPad USB Portable Secure Hard Drive, the one that boasts a physical pass-coded keypad. And this? This is the graveyard of Lenovo’s discarded ideas, dreams, and prototypes. We’re super fond of the sketch to the far right which shows how a button is pressed by a finger (or is that a toe!?) That’s all — we just really like this photo.

The Moto Kraver Strikes at Gizmodo [Crappy Viral Marketing]

Yesterday, Joel at BoingBoing Gadgets discovered a very aggressive, um, “fan” of the Motorola Krave trolling their comments for the last couple of weeks. Turns out, he’s a frequent pundit at Giz, CrunchGear and Lifehacker (and everywhere else on the internets) too! Did you know that the Krave matches perfectly with a sports car and an alien mountain shelter? It sucks the power out of the shill to actually say you work for Motorola, though, dude. But I guess that constitutes disclosure? Hit the jump to read all about how awesome mgoode says the Krave is.

No hard feelings though, we’ll totally laser etch your Krave at the Giz Gallery (if you promise to engrave Gizmodo on it too). Oh, BTW, I messed with the Krave at a press event a few weeks ago. It sucks.

Wakamaru’s latest gig: distraught thespian, clothes rack

After a failed career of house cleaning and guarding your kids, Mitsubishi’s Wakamaru was left with a choice: toll booth operator or actress — she chose the latter, easier option. Osaka University’s 20-minute play titled, “I, Worker,” focuses on a young couple whose seductive (don’t you think?) housekeeping robot has lost her will to work after struggling with the idea of human servitude. The play is expected to go full-length by the year 2010, at which point we expect Wakamaru to extend her brooding to the insatiable lust she feels to violate her programming and enslave humanity. It’s not like she can pull off a broad emotional range thanks to that chiseled face of apprehension anyway.

Simple Hack Adds Power-Charge USB Slot to VGA Socket [Hack]

Sometimes the simplest hacks are the most useful: If you’ve got a laptop with limited USB ports and you’re in the market for something small and handy to let you charge a device over USB, then this is for you. All it takes is a male-male VGA adapter, a spare USB socket and some accurate soldering: it’s all in the Instructable. Neat. [Instructables]

USB Toaster Cooks Bread From Your Desk

USBtoaster.jpg

If you’re wondering what to buy a tech-obsessed relative for Christmas then why not pick up a USB toaster so that they can prepare breakfast at their desk or via a notebook on the commute?

Only one slice of bread can be done at a time and it’ll take between seven and nine minutes to toast it properly. It also supports Firewire 400 and 800 for Mac owners and you can remotely control toasting levels via the supplied software on your computer.

Honda’s color-changing speedometer to drive out bad driving habits

So, you’ve a lead foot? What of it, right? Honda‘s hoping to make that bad little habit vanish by using the tried and true guilt trip method, or more specifically, the Ecological Drive Assist System. For starters, the technology’s ECON Mode works with the CVT and engine to “support more fuel-efficient driving.” The real kicker, however, is the color-based “guidance function” — drive like a granny, your speedo lights up green, drive a little wilder, and things get a bit blue, and if you toss fuel economy to the wind and let ‘er rip, expect a full-on blue screen and the voice of God to come thundering through your sound system instructing that those horses be held. The EDAS should appear in the automaker’s Insight hybrid as early as Spring 2009, though there’s no word if it’ll be standard equipment on the rumored S3000.

Dealzmodo: $10 FireFly Christmas Ornament [Ho Ho Ho]

FireFly may have gone down in flames, but the Serenity flies on with a little help of string and your Christmas tree. Usually going for upwards of $20—not that we obsessively check prices on all FireFly gear—the Serenity ornament is now on sale for a sweet $10. And just in case Joss Whedon stops by as part of some magical Christmas miracle, he’ll recognize that he should vacate the premises immediately, lest you request him to play the role of Angel in a Buffy Season 2 Episode 13 reenactment.
