iriver’s $40 T5 USB stick-style audio player unboxed and reviewed

iriver’s T5 was launched and forgotten in one fell swoop, but with a starting price of under $40 for the 2GB edition, it’s at least worth a look, right? Critics over at Pocketables were able to secure one of the USB stick-styled devices for review, and they even bothered to host up a plethora of unboxing / hands-on shots for those keenly interested. Size wise, the unit is just marginally smaller than your average USB WWAN modem, and while the minuscule OLED display wasn’t much to look at, it sure trumped those screen-less rivals. Under pressure, the stick delivered “surprisingly good sound quality,” and while the device overall didn’t bring anything fantastically fresh to the table, the inbuilt USB jack, integrated display and excellent audio capabilities made it a pretty good option for the gym. ‘Course, there are formidable alternatives out there (Sansa Clip, anyone?), so we’d recommend giving the linked review a closer look before breaking out the plastic.

Text Messages Cost Carriers Nothing

Sms
Telcos are ripping you off. If you are surprised by this, you may also be interested in some prime real estate I have for sale. It’s on the Moon.

But just because we all know that we are being scammed doesn’t make the manner of the sting any less interesting. A piece in the New York Times goes into some detail on the cost of text messages to the cell carriers and concludes that it is close to zero. An SMS doesn’t even take any bandwidth away from the regular channels which carry calls:

That’s why a message is so limited in length: it must not exceed the length of the message used for internal communication between tower and handset to set up a call. The channel uses space whether or not a text message is inserted.

Cost to telco: $0.00. Cost to customers: $0.20. Number of text messages sent per year (worldwide): 2.5 trillion. We’ll leave you to do the math. Suffice it to say that  printer ink market now looks like a bargain.

HP MediaSmart Server ex487 gets hands-on love and full-blown review

HP’s 1.5TB MediaSmart Server ex487 (and its smaller 750GB sibling, the ex485) were just announced hours ago, but that hasn’t stopped a few lucky reviewers from putting their hands-on pictures and impressions online for the world to pore over. The biggest knocks that seemed to really grate the nerves of critics were that the single eSATA port was not port-multiplier aware, and despite the bump to 2GB of RAM, the TwonkyMedia and Remote Media Streaming software were still deemed “quirky and in need of some polish.” Those gripes aside, the newfangled unit was pretty well adored. In fact, WeGotServed flat-out called the device “stunning,” praising HP for its tightly integrated applications that worked fairly well on top of Windows Home Server. For those eying a simple-to-use media server, it looks like HP finally produced one that can be purchased sans regret; the real question, however, is will the outfit push these delectable new features down to existing ex470 / ex475 owners?

$99 iPhone Arrives, But Not at Walmart

123354walmartad
AT&T is knocking out refurbished 8GB iPhones at $99 apiece, and 16GB models for $199. This news comes in at the exact same time that Walmart’s iPhone goes official, at $197 for the 8GB handset.

That AT&T is selling refurbs is nothing special — both AT&T and Apple are veterans of the refurb game and some great bargains can be had. That Walmart’s iPhone price is not $99, as some gullible people believed, is equally non-shocking.

But the fact that Walmart, a company known for squeezing every penny out of its suppliers, managed to knock Apple down just $2 is astonishing. We wouldn’t be surprised if this discount is actually coming out of Walmart’s pocket.

Of course, Apple is a famously tough negotiator, too – just look at the fuss over the 99¢ track price at the iTunes Store – but this meeting reminds us of our tedious science teacher, who used to think himself very clever when banging on about "immovable objects" and "unstoppable forces". The moron.

XBMC caught running on Compal’s Jax10 MID

Mmm, do we like where this could go. Some engineering soul has managed to get the open-sourced XBMC onto a MID — Compal‘s Atom-powered Jax10, to be precise. In theory, at least, this combination would make for a decidedly incredible portable media player if the price of these Mobile Internet Devices were to hit a reasonable level. Sure, many of the Cowon / iriver / Archos units support just about every file format out there, but you’re still limited by whatever ecosystem comes loaded in. Have a look at the demonstration vid after the break, but don’t blame us if you suddenly get the urge to buy a MID.

IPhone Nano Clones Already on Sale

Iphonenano

We’re not quite sure if this is a direct result of the hot iPhone Nano rumors bouncing around or if it just a natural shrinking of an existing iPhone knock-off, but the tiny fake iPhone Nano is excellent nonetheless.

See! How the copied icons are too small for their titles. Gasp! At the ability for Thai manufacturers to replicate even non-existent products in mere days. Swoon! At the fact that this fake beast is still probably better than my newly-bought junk-phone. And Wonder! If this handset doesn’t just come from the same Chinese factory as the real iPhone.

If you want to see this in scale with the full-sized iClone, the picture is below.

Photobucket Celebrates 50 Million Users!

This article was written on August 30, 2007 by CyberNet.

Photobucket

It’s been just four years since Photobucket launched, and they’re already celebrating 50 MILLION users! That’s quite the accomplishment, and to help celebrate, they’re offering their users a free gift: 10 free 4×6 prints. That means that if every one of the 50 million members takes advantage of the free photos, Photobucket will have given away over five hundred million photos!

Photobucket has had an interesting year with both ups and downs. You may recall back in April when they found themselves feuding again with MySpace. Shortly after their little fight, they were friends again, and shortly after that, Fox Interactive Media acquired them. As you know, Fox is a subsidiary of News Corp. who also owns MySpace. They ended up getting acquired for $250 million, and they’re valued between $300–$400+ million.

So besides the fact that they just broke 50 million users, they also have an impressive amount of photos uploaded to their site. Right now the number is sitting at over 3.4 billion and just continues to grow! As of June, they ranked #47 in the Top 100 Global Sites per comScore’s Media Metrix.

To take advantage of your 10 free prints, you’ll need to visit their online store. All it takes is selecting your prints and then entering in a coupon code to get the credit. You will be responsible for paying the shipping charges, but they say it should only cost you a couple of bucks to mail.

Congrats Photobucket, and here’s to 50 Million more users!
