$99 iPhones Available–While Supplies Last

Of course Sascha’s right about the $99 Wal-Mart iPhone rumor–it was just that. While the big box retailer is in fact selling the Apple handset, the store’s $197 price tag is a mere $2 off of the original Cupertino price. Those still looking to pick up the popular smartphone for under $100 are in luck, however–AT&T is offering an 8GB 3G iPhone for a cool $99.

The rub, however, is that the thing is refurbished–that’s industry code for used. Says AT&T:

Each refurbished phone is independently quality tested and loaded with the latest software to meet current factory standards. Some refurbished iPhone 3G devices will have minor scratches.

Too good to be true? Well, yeah, sort of. As great a deal as $99 seems, you’ve still got to opt into that two-year AT&T contract, which will wind up costing you a lot more than $197.

The deal ends December 31st.

Leaked Snow Leopard image potentially indicates a 32 / 64-bit divide

Apple’s said it’s taking a break from adding flashy features to OS X to focus on the foundations and stability of the system with Snow Leopard, and this latest leaked screenshot might indicate that those foundations are moving to 64 bits — it shows System Preferences saying it needs to restart in 32-bit mode to open the Network panel. That’s certainly interesting, given the rumors that Apple’s dropping support for non-Intel machines and maybe even 32-bit Intel processors with this release, but it could also just mean that whoever took this screenshot doesn’t have a 64-bit-friendly version of that preference pane installed. (We’re guessing the latter, since there are a lot of 32-bit only Core Duo Intel Macs out there.) Restarting apps to change modes seems pretty clunky, though — shades of System 7 and the 32-bit Enabler, for the olds — so we’re hoping Apple’s got a more elegant solution in the works. Macworld’s just around the corner, we’re sure we’ll hear more from Steve Phil soon.

Casio Exilim NX9250 phone spotted in Verizon livery

We had an inkling that Casio and Verizon were up to something when we caught an Exilim-branded phone working its way through the FCC, and it looks like that hunch was right-on — check out this hot snap of an Exilim NX9250 that just turned up. We’re told that the chubby-looking handset features a 5.1 megapixel camera (right, Exilim) and “possibly” a WVGA screen, and those hinges suggest a swivel-flip design — too bad it doesn’t look as slick as that W63CA we were secretly hoping for. We’ll see what this one looks like all dolled up — we’ve got a feeling we’ll find out soon enough. One more shot after the break.

Is this the VAIO P?

Sony isn’t being too coy with the VAIO P, is it? In addition to that teaser image, oh-so-beautiful FCC shot, and mistakenly-posted specs page, CNET’s uncovered this pic of the rectangular netbook with its lid open. We can’t really tell if the machine pictured has that crazy 8-inch 1600 x 768 display we’d heard about, but there’s a lot of the VAIO TT in those lines — so much so we’re wondering if it’s a ‘shop, albeit a super-hot one. Of course, there’s no word on pricing, but we’re hoping it’s somewhere close to reasonable — we’ll find out in just a couple weeks at CES.

Update: We knew it looked a little too much like the TT — it’s a ‘shop. Oh well, at least we can dream.

John Lennon eerily returns to push OLPC cause

John Lennon may have departed this planet 28 years ago, but that’s not to say he can’t still have an impact. With the assistance of technology and the consent of Yoko Ono, the heralded Beatle has returned in a new OLPC spot. In the ad, the late musician proclaims: “Imagine every child no matter where in the world they were could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want.” If this sounds like just the inspiration you needed to get your donation on, hop on past the break to see the vid in its entirety.

Creative’s Zii actually a CES-bound processing chip

While our vivid imaginations certainly had something more invigorating than this in mind, we suppose Creative could still surprise us at CES 2009. The curious Zii website we peeked a few days back is reportedly referring to an all new processing chip, and while eipZENter isn’t being too forthcoming with details just yet, we are told that it will likely be “one of the biggest projects Creative has invested in.” If that’s just too vague for your tastes, try this: “[Zii] is completely different from the X-Fi audio chip and it will be used in a variety of upcoming products.” Alrighty then.

[Thanks, Swild]

Inelegant hack connects T-Mobile G1 to iPod dock

Come to think of it, this mod wouldn’t even be necessary (though, we suppose it would still be useful) had HTC bothered to put a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack on the T-Mobile G1, but alas, we’re stuck with some random ExtUSB port. In order to make that output jack compatible with the litany of iPod peripherals (namely sound systems), the modders over at WebNetta figured out what pins linked to what in order to connect the G1 to Made for iPod gear. Best of all, the secrets of the connections are all spilled out in the read link should you care to try this yourself, but please, tidy things up a bit if you do.

Blockbuster Lends Support to Blu-Ray

This article was written on June 18, 2007 by CyberNet.

BlockbusterHD DVD’s and Blu-Ray DVD formats have been battling ever since they entered the market as competitors.  Now Blu-Ray has a huge supporter on their side as Blockbuster has decided that when they increase their selection of high definition DVD’s next month, Blu-Ray will be the chosen format.  This will occur in 1,450 stores and will be another push to determine which format will be the overall market preference.

Up until this point, Blockbuster had both Blu-Ray and HD DVD’s. However, what they found was that those who rented the high definition movies were choosing Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. In fact, the number was as high as 70%. Senior Vice President of Merchandising at Blockbuster when speaking to the Associated Press said, “The consumers are sending us a message. I can’t ignore what I’m seeing.”

Blockbuster isn’t totally ditching the HD DVD format because they will still be available online, but also in the 250 stores that were originally testing the two formats. It will be a limited availability though, which really pushes Blu-Ray ahead in this battle.

Blu-Ray Rot

And while we’re on the topic of Blu-Ray, it appears as though there has been a recent issue with disc rot. Some of the discs are rotting, and others are falling apart. This source gives us indication that this is not the first time that DVD rot has been an issue. They say that “failures are a combination of corrosion – known as “DVD rot” – and delamination, where the layers of the disc separate.”

Gizmodo is reporting that as of now, it looks like only The Prestige is turning up problems. Hopefully this is an isolated incident, and those with faulty DVDs will be able to get replacement discs.  Any problems with your Blu-Ray discs? Let us know in the comments….
