Star Wars Wii mod realizes very few of our childhood dreams

Grab your Light Swords, it’s time to kill some Jedi to save the Empire from the Ewok menace! We know you already own seven Wiis, each one espousing a different sort of childhood memorabilia or cute-overload, but can’t you use the force to make room in your heart for one more? This Star Wars-themed Wii just hit the eBays, with a $500 starting price that includes the work of art you see before you, a red LED Wiimote and nunchuck, and a copy of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. You can’t usually put a pricetag on this sort of midi-chlorian concentration.

iTunes Freebies! 12 Days of Christmas

itunes-12-days-of-xmasGawd bless ya g’vnor! Mr Apple sir, bless ya heart.

It has been confirmed that Apple will be giving away free media content between Christmas and the new year.

The iTunes Store will be offering a free download every day for twelve days as part of its “12 Days of Christmas” promotion.

The tag-line seems to be “a great way to start filling the iPod you received for Christmas”.

I reckon it’s more a case of ‘download from us and not anyone else….especially that pesky Amazon MP3 lot!’ :)

The first download will be available on Boxing Day and then every day afterwards until 6 January 2009.

Apple says downloads will include rare singles, exclusive live tracks, free music videos from some of the biggest artists in the world plus classic TV episodes.

Any which way you cut it – it’s stuff for free so tis a goodly thing in my book….errr….iPhone :)

Robot Rinses Dishes, Puts them In Dishwasher [Robots]

Panasonic and the University of Tokyo have developed a robot capable of rinsing any dish and put it into the dishwasher. If you’re lazy enough to rejoice, you are probably too lazy to click

The dishwashing robot has three joints and enough sensitivity not to break your china. It moves on a rail, guided by TV cameras placed in the ceiling and sensors in the arm itself. According to the research team in charge, this is only the beginning. They are investigating the possibility of doing laundry robot too, as well as one capable of doing other household chores, like preparing cocktails and playing the bongos. OK, maybe that’s just me. Sky Declares 3D TV Broadcasts A Success

3DTV.jpg

Movies like Beowulf and Journey To The Center Of The Earth, despite one of which being a decent enough film in its own right, only really come alive if you can watch them in their intended format of glorious 3D.

Hollywood is starting to get more involved in the extra dimension but Sky isn’t too far behind going by recent reports. The broadcast giant recently completed 3D trials and declared them a success.

MAXIAN M1T Pocket Multi TV does the PMP thing like it means it

No use messing around in this space, if you’re gonna build the umpteenth 3.5-inch DMB-capable PMP for the voracious Korean market, you might as well put some heart into it. MAXIAN‘s new M1T Pocket Multi TV shines with 8GB or 16GB of built-in storage, SDHC expansion and just about every codec imaginable, including the extra-sexy ones like OGG, AAC, DivX and XviD. The whole kit is running Windows CE 5.0, with what looks to be a resistive touchscreen (480 x 320) and a purty home-grown interface. No word on price, but it’s not like we’d have much use for that DMB antenna anyways. We’re not bitter.

Dealzmodo: All PS3 Gold Box Today [PS3]

I’ll be honest. More than once, these all day Gold Boxes have let me down. But I’m shamelessly addicted to the format. And today, it’s all PS3, all day.

A few of the deals are obvious games, like Brothers in Arms Hell’s Highway and Tomb Raider Evolution Underworld, but it looks like at least a few unspecified Blu-ray movies are in the mix as well. Also, you can pick up Motorstorm: Pacific Rift for $40 or a 160 GB Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Pack PS3 with a free Blu-ray remote for $440 all day. [Amazon]

Xmas tree made entirely of SCSI drives, offers lower CPU load than IDE alternatives

Xmas tree made entirely of SCSI drives, has lower CPU load than IDE alternatives

Ever found yourself with 70 decommissioned SCSI hard drives and an awful, awful lot of free time on your hands? If so, and you’re bursting with holiday spirit, perhaps you’ll choose to do the same as an apparent sys admin who goes by the name of Trigger. He took those drives from RAID arrays destined for the scrap heap and, rather than perform the DoD wipe that would have otherwise been required, chose to build this lovely — if somewhat askew (see below) — “tree” from the bevy of mirrored platters within. In fact the geeky holiday decor was made entirely from the bits and pieces within the drives, the lone exception being a nut purchased for $.39, making it a far more affordable project than yesterday’s OLED tree. It’s impressive to behold, but given the amount of personal data within, we think it’s probably more likely to spread lawsuits than cheer this season.

Swarm-bots Converge On Child, Rescue Her From Freaky Parents [Robots]

The collective power of many little robots could do a lot of good for the world. But for now, it just pulls little children across the floor in a freaky way.

Still, I find myself transfixed as the robots self-organize, connecting to one another like a giant train to stack their power for a greater purpose. It’s also pretty funny to watch the poor child who must be thinking, “this was not worth that stupid Barbie, not at all.” [EPA via MAKE]

Rand McNally Releases Atlases for Kindle, Has Odd Vision for the Future of Maps [Kindle]

Rand McNally can’t be happy with everyone dropping their bulky atlases for GPS units and nav-enabled phones, so they’re fighting back. But they seem a little confused.

The company is releasing a series of atlases for the Kindle, which will be purchased, delivered and consumed like any other ebook on the platform. The first maps, for Northern California, Southern California, and Washington, will be available for $1.99 each, and like the Rand atlases of your childhood, will probably be exhaustive.

There’s nothing expressly wrong with the concept, and the price could well be worth the utility, but the fact remains that putting static map collections on an ebook reader only accentuates how outmoded they are, and how artificially limited the powerful Kindle is. Regardless, the Kindle’s search function and the carefully indexed maps will provide a workable map solution for that small Kindle-equipped, Google Maps-forswearing slice of the population. Samsung BlackJack II tops Consumer Reports’ list of best smartphones

Sometimes it’s the unsung workhorses that deserve the lion’s share of the praise, and that might just be the case with the aging Samsung BlackJack II — a phone that you probably wouldn’t expect to top Consumer Reports’ January 2009 ratings of popular smartphones. Sure, it may not be the shiniest device on the market these days, but you’ve got to admit it’s just about as functional as you’d ever need a business-class handset to be with GPS, HSDPA, and WinMo 6.1, which gladly sucks up Exchange accounts until you’re blue in the face. When you factor in the fact that it runs just $80 these days on an AT&T contract in a choice of four colors… okay, yeah, we can kinda see it. The iPhone 3G and T-Mobile G1 don’t play second fiddle terribly often these days (they were way down in the middle of the Consumer Reports pack in this testing cycle, in fact), so let’s just let this old dog have one more moment in the spotlight, shall we?
