Evernote Brings Proper File Syncing to iPhone

Everfiles2

Evernote, the brain-replacement people, might finally have cracked the iPhone note-taking problem.

We’ve taken a few look at iPhone note taking applications and, while many of them offer some neat features, not one has yet achieved proper, over-the-air syncing combined with ubiquity across platforms. Evernote took a stab at this with its last update, which let you mark certain items as favorites to be mirrored across your iPhone, Mac and Windows machines.

The latest tweak is for-pay only, but the $5 per month will buy you full documents synchronization, not just for your notes but for anything you may drag into them. To illustrate, an example: Create a new Evernote note (on your computer). Until today you could add pictures and text. Now you can drag in an Excel sheet, a Word document or a PDF (among others) and it will sync across all your devices.

Big deal, you say? The trick is that if you then open and edit the files, those changes are reflected immediately upon sync, and can be viewed (although not edited) on the iPhone. You can also mail those documents from the iPhone, which is a rather rare feature even in apps like FileMagnet or AirSharing, which are dedicated to viewing and storing your files.

If this last feature gets your juices flowing then good news. It’s free. Only the doc sync costs money, although you do get a much bigger bandwidth allowance for the money.

Orange’s French iPhone Exclusive

Iphone
Orange’s exclusive iPhone deal in France is about to end — French telco regulator ARCEP has ruled that the Orange/Apple team-up stifles competition, going so far as to call it a "serious and immediate threat".

The ruling is a result of a rather obvious land-grab by rival French telco Bouygues Telecom, which filed a complaint back in September. Of course, the iPhone is hot and everyone wants a piece of that action, and Bouygues’ complaint is clearly aimed less at a free and open market (as if!) and more at taking a slice of the Apple pie.

While a few countries have multiple carriers offering the iPhone, most have the same exclusive relationship as Orange in France. And with very few notable exceptions (O2 in the UK and AT&T in the US), they all take advantage of that exclusivity to rip off the customer.

In Spain, for example, Movistar offers two tiers of data service, arguably the most important part of an iPhone plan. The lower is capped at just 200MB per month and will cost a minimum of €24 ($35). If you want the top-of-the-line (and still barely useful) 1GB per month, you’ll need to pay a minimum of €45 ($65). A little competition would lower that price considerably.

Bouyges Telecom is rubbing its hands in anticipation, and plans to offer the iPhone soon (if, of course, Apple agrees). Orange is doing the obvious, too, and will appeal the decision in court, further proving that good service and a great product is not important in the free market — you just need to have enough money for good lawyers.

Philips unveils Prestigo SRT9320 touchscreen universal remote

The last Philips Prestigo universal remote we saw was that gigantic SR-M80145 “tablet,” but it looks like the company’s toned it down with the sexy new Prestigo SRT9320. The company’s new top-of-the-line IR-only clicker has a 2.8-inch color touchscreen and can be programmed to control up to 20 devices entirely from the remote itself without using a PC — which can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your setup and macro situation. It’s all yours for $249 sometime in the first quarter of twenty-oh-nine.

SlingPlayer For BlackBerry Launching in Public Beta Before Next Year, Just [Sling]

SlingPlayer for BlackBerry, which was previewed in a usable state nearly a year ago, is finally coming to BlackBerry in a public beta.

The player will run on most BlackBerry phones, with the notable exception of the Storm, which it seems would be best suited for such purposes. According to the company, the app will run straight away and without caveat on the BlackBerry Bold, Curve 8900, 8820, Curve 8320, Pearl Flip 8220, and Pearl 8120, assuming they are updated to OS 4.5.

Beyond that, Sling says that the program may run fine on a variety of other OS 4.5 EDGE-only handsets, though these configurations will be unsupported. If our early hands-on is any indicator, a solid EDGE connection will generally do well enough, so for all intents and purposes this release will cover most of the operational BlackBerry line. The beta will open on 12/30. [Sling]

When created, the robot “jitters around, buzzing and clacking” which sounds pretty great.

Everything is supplied, you just need to bring an empty can, an AA battery and a screwdriver.

The kit is on sale now for $15 from X-treme Geek.

ElectraPole Seeks Publisher – Wii Pole Dancing

wii_pole_dancingRemember Peekaboo Pole Dancing’s Electrapole?

It’s the Carmen Electra-branded pole dancing kit I wrote about back in April.

Well, it sounds like the crunch has hit this interesting title.

Personally I reckon people are saving their cash for the real deal instead of investing in the Wii version ;)

So it seems that Peekaboo Pole Dancing is left with no publisher to make it happen.

A representative from the group said,

“We have not managed to tie up a deal for this yet but we still remain hopeful. We have, however, connected with a company that is manufacturing a peripheral product and we are investigating mutual publishing opportunities. Please feel free to give a shout out to any developers or publishers who want to give this a crack. [The game] just needs someone with a little nerve.”

Is there anyone out there willing to take a chance?

Can I be there for the release party?

Newegg’s Top 10 Sellers from February 2001

This article was written on November 08, 2008 by CyberNet.

newegg logo.jpgA few years ago we posted an ad from a CompUSA store that reminded us what prices were like for laptops back in 1994. This was before the Internet really started to take off as a means to sell products, but these days a lot of people are turning to the web to save a few bucks.

Newegg is a mass electronics retailer that is available in the United States, Canada, and China. They’ve often been lauded for their awesome customer service and prices that are hard to beat anywhere else.

I thought it would be fun to see what the top 10 items were at Newegg’s online store from just a few weeks after they launched in 2001. Thanks to the WayBack Machine we were able to do this, and I think you’ll find the list just as interesting as I did:

Is The PS3 A ‘Sinking Ship’?

ps3 sinking_cr.jpgThe weather outside may be frightful but it’s downright cataclysmic if you’re Sony’s PS3.

Plummeting sales have prompted some analysts to say that the PS3 is a ‘sinking ship’ and that unless Sony takes action fast, the Xbox 360 will get so far ahead that it may as well just give up.

Comparing sales from November 2007 and last month, PS3 sales are down a significant 19%: that’s 466,000 units sold vs. 378,000 [in the US], according to market watchers, NPD.

CNN’s Silicon Alley Insider has sounded an early death knell for the console claiming that the PS3 is falling behind even faster, and cites 3 non-recession related reasons.
