CES 2009: Gaming wrap-up

It’s no secret that gaming’s presence at CES can barely be felt, but we were lucky enough to find some diamonds in the rough, including a few that made us want to phone a lawyer.

While there was no new gaming software to be found, there was a

Olidata Conte ultraportable makes its shiny debut

It doesn’t look like this one was actually on display at CES, but Italy’s Olidata does seem to have taken the opportunity to announce its shiny new Conte ultraportable, which takes square aim at the growing ranks of 13.3-inch ultra-thin laptops out there. From the looks of it, this one will be available in two different versions: one with a 16:10, 1280×800 display, and one with a 16:9, 1366×768 display, each of which will come equipped with a small form factor Core 2 Duo processor, optional built-in 3G or WiMAX, and a promised battery life of more than four hours (or seven with an extended battery). The 16:10 model will also add a few bonuses like Intel Turbo Memory, a fingerprint reader, a backlit keyboard, and 3GB of RAM as standard. Sadly, there’s no indication of a release’ round these parts just yet, but both models will supposedly be hitting Europe in May for “less than €1,000” (or somewhere under $1,300).

[Thanks, Faber]

Fully Equipped: Where’s the 64GB iPod Touch?

More memory, please: waiting for the iPhone to go to 32GB and the Touch to hit 64GB.

OK, now that CES and Macworld are behind us, it’s time to take a moment to ponder just what was missing. For me, anyway, the biggest letdown was the absence …

Sony’s Spring camcorders: changes at the extremes

While Panasonic and Canon look like they’re delivering a solid if somewhat uninspiring line of camcorders for the first half of the year, Sony emerged from CES with the most newsworthy set of models–newsworthy for what the product line doesn’t include, as well as what it does.

First Photos, Details on 50 mpg 2010 Toyota Prius

Toyota Prius
DETROIT – The Empire struck back. Toyota unveiled its 2010 Toyota Prius at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show and it’s roomier, more efficient, loaded with more technology, and it’s even faster to 60 mph. The first Prius that breaks 10 seconds in the 0-60 mph derby goes on sale late this spring and Toyota estimates Americans will buy 180,000 Priuses in the first full calendar year vs. 160,000 for the outgoing model. Here’s why Nissan, Honda, Ford, and GM may have their hands full after making up ground in the past year as the old, second-generation Prius stayed too long on the market. Highlights of the third-generation Toyota Prius include:

Sharpen Your Math Skills with Nintendo DS Personal Trainer

professor-kageyama-lifestyl.jpg

Quick, what’s 236 divided by 5? OK, math can be hard. According to a study conducted for Nintendo, 1 in 5 (out of 400) children surveyed believe they’re more likely to grow up to become a professional athlete, actor, or singer than to get As and Bs in math. More than one-third of those surveyed say that math is their most difficult subject, and nearly one-third of kids have very negative feelings about math. Eighteen percent of those surveyed called math “boring” and 13 percent called it “torture.”

Nintendo has come up with a fun solution to get kids interested and confident in their math skills. “Personal Trainer: Math” is a new software for Nintendo DS that both entertains and improves basic math abilities.
Personal Trainer: Math is the second in Nintendo’s Personal Trainer series; the first was Personal Trainer: Cooking.

Etape Measures Up in Analog and Digital

Digital_measuring_tapeThis nifty tape measure has been likened by some to the iPod, and with the white case and clickwheel-alike controls its easy to see why. But hidden under the design "homage" (plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery) is a rather useful upgrade to the analog tape measure.

It works just like any other tape measure. Complete, we expect, with an eye-gouging, quick-spring retraction. Unlike other measures, it gives a readout of the distance on the top LCD display, in both metric and the more stately imperial system, right down to 1/16th inch. For the forgetful, it also has a memory function to record measurements and you can even add the length of the body for those tight corners.

Our only worry is build quality. If it’s built like a toy, it will be useless. If it’s rugged enough to survive a dunk in a cup of over-sugared, milky British builder’s tea, we’re in. $25.

VAIO P doesn’t have nothin’ on these other awesome pocket-friendly PCs

We can’t decide what’s more hilarious: these pictures, or Sony’s attempt to convince us we can fit the VAIO P in a jeans (or Jimmy Fallon’s jacket) pocket. Comedy ensues after the break.
