Obama Disappointed by Retro Whitehouse Tech

Old_ibm_pc_xt
The first thing you do when you move into a new home is throw out the junk and start over. And that’s just what the Obama administration is going to have to do. According to the Washington Post, the new team moved in and found legacy hardware and systems so old fashioned that it prompted spokesman Bill Burton to say "It is kind of like going from an Xbox to an Atari."

Ouch! And remember, that’s the official line. We imagine the behind the scenes muttering is much worse. So, what’s the problem? Well, the Mac-loving, Crackberry-toting prez found old Windows hardware running "six-year-old versions of Microsoft software" and a curious lack of notebook computers.

The systems are also rather arcane — no email accessible from outside, no IM and – horror – no Facebook. The tech savvy team soon worked around this, though, and set up their own email accounts using the geek’s choice, Gmail. Nice.

Another Mac Virus Alert. Real This Time?

Ism0901
Anti-virus maker Intego has issued a warning about a Mac trojan that is both in the wild and actually malicious, unlike anything seen before. The distribution system is BitTorrent — specifically a pirated version of the iWork 09 suite just released by Apple.

What does this mysterious trojan do? It drops an application named iWorkServices into the system startup folder (/System/Library/StartupItems). Intego:

The malicious software connects to a remote server over the Internet; this means that a malicious user will be alerted that this Trojan horse is installed on different Macs, and will have the ability to connect to them and perform various actions remotely. The Trojan horse may also download additional components to an infected Mac.[emphasis added]

It sounds a little woolly, doesn’t it? "Various actions remotely" sounds threatening but is really too non-specific. Better is the recommendation from Intego: Install its VirusBarrier X4 and X5 software. Surprise!

This might well be the first real security threat that OS X has seen. Or it may be a rather cynical cash-in on a harmless trojan. It could even be a complete set up. One thing we do know, though, is that you’d have to be a complete moron to download iWork 09 via BitTorrent — there is a free, one month trial version available from Apple’s own site. Also, Intego: way to write a headline — take a look at the link below, copied verbatim. It reads like a telegram.

Second Generation MSI Wind Goes on Sale

Wind120

MSI’s updated, and prettified, Wind netbook is at last available to buy. Coming in at a not-too-pricey $470 over at Amazon (the list price is $535), the new Wind U120 offers absolutely no surprises for the netbook-aware. It has the usual Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, a gig of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi stretching up to n speeds.

In fact, the only difference is the case design — it’s shinier, has sharper edges and is altogether more grown-up looking than the original U110. It also ships as standard with the longer-lived six-cell battery, the minimum for an ultra portable machine. And MSI has even given it a unibody MacBook-a-like black screen bezel.

No word yet on just how hackable this is. The original Wind was the perfect machine upon which to install Mac OS X, with plentiful drivers for just about all of the internal hardware. If this really is nothing more than an updated case design, this version should be just the same.

Trigem’s $500 LLUON Mobbit MID goes on sale, wackiness ensues

Hard to believe but after three years (almost to the day) a MID / UMPC running a Microsoft OS with a $500 MSRP is finally out for retail. Trigem’s LLUON mobbit is available in two configurations of which the lesser lists for KRW699,000 or about $490. A KRW799,000 ($560) presumably adds the listed WiBro spec for Korean style WiMaxing. That meager sum takes home a 13.2-ounce box o’ XP with 1GB of memory, a 30GB disk, 4.8-inch 1,024 x 600 touchscreen with stylus, Bluetooth, WiFi, and 2 megapixel camera all riding Intel’s Atom Z520 processor. Not bad… not beautiful by any stretch but significant enough to elicit maniacal behavior amongst devoted UMPC fanboys everywhere.

Update: It appears that the WiBro model is actually the cheaper of the two. The lower price resulting from a required 18 month subscription.

Rumor: 10-inch Acer Aspire One to replace 8.9-incher

We’re hearing some murmurings today that Acer’s planning on replacing its current, 8.9-inch Aspire One with the previously seen 10.1-inch Aspire One (the 103), phasing out the former. The new model will pack a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, and 1GB of RAM, optional 3G, SDHC card slot, and 3 USB ports — relatively standard fare, to be sure — though it’s going to come in a few sexy colors we sure do like the looks of Sure, Digitimes (the source of this rumor) isn’t necessarily the most reliable paper we read in the morning with our coffee, but this particular tidbit doesn’t strike us as terribly far-fetched. We’ll have to (reportedly) wait until sometime in the second quarter to find out for sure, though. In the meantime: calm down.

Update: This worst-kept secret is now official, with Acer confirming plans to release its rumored 10-incher, but not saying just when or for how much. The confirmed specs are exactly what we expected — go figure.

Video: Meizu M8 prepped for full-scale launch, IP battle with Apple

Meizu’s been on a tear since our last M8 update. Sitting atop a new 0.9.0.1 firmware release complete with working copy and paste, Outlook calendar synchronization, and a “full backup system,” the M8 is now supported by a published SDK and licensed to ride the Chinese airwaves for what looks to be a March, mainland China release. With all the passion it could muster, Meizu posted the following announcement to its English website:

Let’s bear witness together, to the great moment of MEIZU formally entering the big stage of mobile phone industry!

Currently, the M8 handset with its iPhone roots (but a WinCE core) is only available to an abiding Chinese press and die-hard Meizu fanatics — a population said to rival the intensity of Apple’s own sheeple elite. Having watched the M8 make the transition from art to part over the last few years, we’re mighty stoked at the prospective launch to say the least. And while Meizu has clearly trumped Apple’s spec sheet (not user experience) in terms of software (copy paste, background task management, video recording, and plenty more) and hardware (720 x 480 pixel display and beefier silicon), we’ll bet there’s still enough “inspiration” to get Tim Cook and Apple’s legal counsel whipped up into a frenzy of Intellectual Property defense. Latest video after the break.

Lowrance rolls out Outback, Safari, Sierra GPS units

Anyone that dreads the thought of needing to take a GPS beyond the comfy confines of their vehicle will likely want to steer clear of these, but the more adventurous out there will no doubt find plenty to like in Lowrance’s new trio of GPS units. Appropriately (if unimaginatively) dubbed the Outback, Safari, and Sierra, these each boast 2.7-inch LCDs, along with a microSD card slot, all the usual outdoor-friendly GPS features, and some nifty additions like a barometric altimeter and 3D electronic compass on the higher end models. Look for them to be available in May for between $230 and $550.

Daft Punk vs. Adam Freeland, ‘Aer Obama’: Free MP3 of the Day

To celebrate the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president, British DJ Adam Freeland’s remix of Daft Punk’s adrenaline-baiting dance banger “Aerodynamic” into “Aer Obama” provides an undeniable musical power of anticipation and a tribute to history being made. Mixing vocal samples from a Speak & Spell speech …

Four Eyes: because nerds love USB specs

Ah, horned-rimmed glasses. A style that simultaneously provokes taunts of “four eyes” from cruel children and squeals of muted delight from urban hipsters. Starting in March, this 2-mm thin, 2GB USB bookmark (yes, bookmark) can be yours for $29. A few more pics after the break to ease your confusion.
