Free online game lets you be ‘Hero of the Hudson’

(Credit: AddictingGames)

US Airways pilot Chesley Sullenberger has been widely labeled a hero for safely landing a passenger jet in the Hudson River last month. Now, as such things are wont to happen in Internet land, a free online game called Hero of the Hudson lets you emulate his success …

Digital distribution not expected to rule packaged media anytime soon

Whoa, vaquero — calm your jets. This is just a projection, which may or may not prove to be indicative of reality. That said, there’s still quite a lot here to discuss, particularly since we’ve been hearing so much hubbub over the supposed explosion of digital distribution. Media Control GfK International has forecast that sales of Blu-ray Discs will increase some 150 percent to $2.9 billion, up from $1.1 billion in 2008. For those keeping count, digital distribution only generated $1.5 billion last year, and that’s including every penny made from VOD and broadband services. In-Stat analyst Michael Paxton was quoted as saying that the “bandwidth required to stream any type of HD video is way beyond what most households have,” and he continued by noting that the “convenience factor is still not there for streaming media.” You owe it to yourself to hit up the read link for the full report before blasting your opinion in comments below, but we suppose we can’t stop you either way.

Eurocom lays claim to Core i7-equipped Clevo D900F

Remember all those Clevo laptops revealed last month? While we’re expecting more information at CeBIT 2009, those crazy Canadians at Eurocom have gone ahead and spilled the beans on the 17-inch D900F. As conjectured, the 11.9-pound behemoth’s packing an equally-mighty Intel Core i7 processor in 2.66, 2.93 and 3.2GHz varieties. It’s also got three 500GB hard drives totaling 1.5TB of space, 8GB DDR3 RAM, an NVIDIA G280 GPU, and a Blu-ray burner. Launch date is May 1, although according to Notebook Reviews we shouldn’t expect to get our hands on it until Q4 2009. No word on pricing, but we suspect this powerhouse is gonna burn a giant hole in our pockets from both the inside and out.

Home stylists

Iconoculture: 2009 style and trim trend: Go stealth? As consumers go to great lengths to stretch their dollars, home hair-cutting parties are an accessible option. Private coif parties aren’t new, but a struggling economy has caught stylists illegally accepting evening shifts, offering up lovely locks for fewer bucks.

Some stylists report an uptick in consumers asking for these “under-the-table” deals.

Consumer and hair-party regular Manoush Zomorodi says she regularly attends hair soirees in Manhattan, where she pays $60 for a high-tier salon stylist (whose name and employer she keeps anonymous), a fraction of the price she would pay at the salon she’d like to go to, but can’t afford.

Netflix considering premium price tiers for additional streaming content?

Look, some people are perfectly content to swap a DVD with Netflix once a millenia and watch Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer in Ladyhawke on their Xbox 360 — other people demand something a bit more “hip” on their Instant Watch queue. Netflix is apparently investigating the possibility of an additional $10 monthly fee to watch HBO shows and movies on the streaming service, or at least has a poll to that effect. For people that keep cable around just for things like HBO and Showtime, it’s an attractive proposition, and perhaps a bit of an inevitability, but at $10 a month we’d expect Netflix to toss in a bit more premium content than just what one channel has to offer. What’s clear is that either way, people are going to find a way to watch this stuff online, and the first provider to figure out the right way to monetize and distribute it wins. This seems like a tentative step in the right direction, if it comes to pass.

Google SketchUp Released For Free

Google SketchUp has finally been released, and to everyone’s surprise it is free (a little sarcasm, but free is good). If you haven’t heard of Google SketchUp then you are missing out. It is a fun little program that will allow you to create 3D models of buildings, houses, decks, and even space ships. It has a lot of customizability so that you can choose textures and really get into it.

If you really want to see how cool this is then check out this page that Google has put up. It allows you to see some quick demonstrations of how powerful the software is. Go ahead and download it, it’s not like you have anything to lose because it is FREE!

Video: Stimulant's XRay mobile app brings SecondLight to any 'ol Surface

When Microsoft demonstrated Surface we were impressed. Then, when they later showed off SecondLight, we were even more impressed — and then were sorry for anyone who had made the considerable investment in one of the earlier, singularly-lighted tables. We’re feeling better now (thanks for asking) after seeing a video demonstration of XRay, a mobile app from Stimulant (who earlier blended a Wii Balance Board with a Surface) that provides similar functionality; letting you effectively see secondary images on the touch-table. The app relies on the ability of the Surface to detect where the phones are, communicating that position to tell them what to display and in what orientation. First up was the iPhone, as seen above, but the app has apparently already been ported to Windows Mobile and Android, meaning most-anyone can get in on the action — assuming they have both a smart table and smart phone. A-ha-inspired video included below for your ’80s flashback amusement.

MP3 Mirror has potential, could be so much more

Given that we’ve seen mirror TVs and MP3 players designed to emit sound within one’s shower, we’d say Antonio Lupi’s MP3 Mirror is just one of the gang. In fairness, we do appreciate the sleek design and its reported ability to integrate into any steel frame mirror, but unless we’re badly mistaken, the user is still responsible for adding speakers. Our suggestion? Hook up with Emo Labs and concoct an all-in-one device with sound emission baked right into the shiny stuff.

Verizon softens the blow, offers $200 rebates on VAIO P wireless broadband activations

Yeah, $900 for the netbook, and a hefty chunk of change for Verizon data — you’re not made of money, right? Verizon Wireless is making things a little easier on VAIO P buyers hesitant to activate 3G service, and offering $200 rebates, in the form of a debit card, if they sign up for a two-year data contract. Hopefully Sony’s working up a similar rebate program to help with the uptick in eye care due to that impossibly high resolution screen.
