AT&T’s Samsung Propel Pro hands-on

AT&T’s Propel Pro ups the ante not only in build quality and material, but the new set is also reborn as a proper smartphone thanks to the inclusion of Windows Mobile 6.1. Though like its predecessor, we find a QWERTY keypad for the much loved messaging features, a 3 megapixel camera, and a well thought out and put together metal housing — though the latter does add heft to an already chubby device. So, what do we like? Well, the display is right on, the keypad is solid, and the $149 price tag is definitely going to win it some fans looking for a messaging device that’ll do a bit more. The heft on the other hand is a bit much, and we’re still troubled by the almost square form factor, but what do we know, people loved the Samsung Propel. We’ll take some more time to get to know it tomorrow and hopefully add a little video to the mix — and some decent lighting.

New Netbook and slim 13-inch laptops from MSI

While they’re not the first name that comes to mind when thinking of Netbooks, PC maker MSI earned a lot of ink last year for its MSI Wind U100, one of the first 10-inch Netbooks to hit the market.

The follow-up, called the Wind U123, has Intel’s latest Atom, the N280, as well as a TV tuner and optional 3G antenna. It’ll also come in red and blue, in addition to the standard white and grey versions we saw with the U100.

MSI has also announced two new 13-inch models from the X-Slim line. Both have 1366×768 displays and run Windows Vista Premium, but the $700 X320 uses an Intel Atom Z530, while the more expensive X340 (starting around $1,000), uses Intel’s new CULV platform — basically a much more efficient mobile processor. At 0.7-inches thick and 2.8 pounds, we could see these being a low-cost alternative to slick, thin 13-inchers such as the MacBook Air or Dell Adamo.

Both the new Wind U123 models and the X-Slim Series notebooks will be available in the US this May, and full specs are after the break.

Cheep Geek: Garmin Nuvi GPS, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Guitar Hero Controller

GarminNuvi.jpg

These prices are so low, you’d think were fooling you! But, no, we’re not.

1. What’s the best thing about driving with a GPS? The fact that you can just turn your brain off and zone out. That sounds dangerous–and it probably is–but driving becomes so relaxing: No more looking at every street sign to make sure you’re making the correct turn, and no more counting the exits; you can just blindly turn where the machine tells you to turn while thinking about other things. If you’d like that kind of driving serenity, snatch up this refurbished Garmin Nuvi 770 from Buy.com. It’s got a 4.3-inch screen, Bluetooth, and an FM transmitter, and it’s selling for the low price of $264.99.

2. The price of memory cards sure has fallen. Buy.com says the list price of this SanDisk 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo card is $149.99, but it’s going now for only $15.41. Add on shipping and the total package is $21.97. Not bad; 4GB will store a lot of photos.

3. Rock out for less with this deal on a Guitar Hero wireless Les Paul controller for PlayStation 3. While the regular price is $49.99, you can grab one for only $19.99.

This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn’t want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back — so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. TomTom XL 340/S(Credit: TomTom)

TomTom announced Wednesday that it’s rolling out a few new models: the TomTomXL 340 and 340S and the TomTom ONE 140 and 140S. The new units now include maps of Mexico, in addition to maps of the United States and Canada. Furthermore, TomTom’s Advanced Lane Guidance …

PrimeTime2Go brings full-length TV episodes to BlackBerry Bold, Curve 8900

Ah, so the rumors were true. As BlackBerry App World descends upon the masses today, a particularly unique service is launching alongside of it: QuickPlay Media’s PrimeTime2Go. Unlike options from Sprint and AT&T, this alternative delivers video only over WiFi, though this arrangement does enable it to work on all carriers. The app will bring full-length television shows to certain BlackBerry smartphones, and with deals inked with NBC, CBS and MTV, we’d say the selection should be pretty good. As for details, it’ll run users $7.99 per month, though it will only operate (initially, at least) on the BlackBerry Bold and Curve 8900, sold by AT&T and T-Mobile, respectively. So, is this the break that mobile TV has been waiting for? Or is this yet another option that better get used to being shunned?

AT&T’s Samsung Impression hands-on with video

With AT&T’s Samsung Impression packing things like quad-band GSM, dual-band HSPA for the Americas and a supremely useable QWERTY keypad, we’re suitably impressed. All that magic aside, the screen, a fairly giant 3.2-inch AMOLED number, is where the big draw for us lies. The display is completely stunning and viewable from just about any angle, the keypad is pretty much right on, and the set just feels like money to hold onto. Coupled with a reasonable 3 megapixel cam with digital zoom and geotagging support, and we’re expecting this to be a wildly popular device at its $200 price point. We tried to capture the beauty of the Impression with vids — we’ve taken the leap from VGA — and pics which you’ll find right after the break.

TomTom intros ONE 140 and XL 340 series, ships GO 740 LIVE

TomTom decided to bust out a pair of announcements this morning, so we won’t waste any time getting right to the crux of it. That splendiferous GO 740 LIVE, which was introduced at CES this January, is finally shipping in the US of A. If you’ll recall, this is TomTom’s first connected navigation system, which can download real-time traffic information, fuel prices, weather reports, etc. If you’re intrigued, you can snag one now with three months of LIVE Services for $399.95. Moving on, we’ve got four new systems entirely: the ONE 140 / ONE 140s (3.5-inch display; 140S announces spoken street and place names) and the XL 340 / XL 340s (4.3-inch display; 340S includes speech functions). Each of these include the company’s IQ Routes technology and Advanced Lane Guidance, features that were previously reserved for higher-end PNDs; furthermore, the new crew also includes maps of Mexico. Catch ’em all this month for $179.95, $199.95, $229.95 and $249.95 in order of mention.

Motorola, Time Warner mixing up multiroom, tru2way cable setups due later this year

Ok, we’ve seen multiroom setups, mostly from IPTV providers, and tru2way has had a limited rollout so far, but Time Warner Cable and Motorola are teaming up to be the first to bring the two together in customers homes. Follow Me TV is already available on FiOS, but the Dolby Digital Plus-supporting DCX3400-M DVR we saw at CES in ’08 and DXC-3200M set-top box will make it happen on cable, shifting high definition video around the house via Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance (MoCA) connections. Hopefully tru2way’s interoperability lets customers choose what equipment makes up their home video network, not just the cable company, but we should find out more after launch later this year.

Sprint’s Samsung Instinct S30 hands-on with video

We had a few minutes with Sprint’s Samsung Instinct S30 at CTIA this evening and while we couldn’t dive in to find its deepest darkest secrets, we did get in a quick tour. This handset is well balanced in hand, perhaps even a tad on the light and “plasticky” side for our taste, but hey, we only had scant minutes to tour before the mob descended. The touch screen seems up to Samsung’s “Please Touch” theme for this year’s CTIA, the haptic feedback adding nice, ah, feedback when in use by reassuring the lab mice in us that our input was doing something. Follow on for a gallery and a quick video tour of the UI and a 360 view of the set proper.
