IBM’s Watson to rival humans in round of Jeopardy!

IBM’s already proven that a computer from its labs can take on the world’s best at chess, but what’ll happen when the boundaries of a square-filled board are removed? Researchers at the outfit are obviously excited to find out, today revealing that its Watson system will be pitted against brilliant Earthlings on Jeopardy! in an attempt to further artificial intelligence when it comes to semantics and searching for indexed information. Essentially, the machine will have to be remarkably labile in order to understand “analogies, puns, double entendres and relationships like size and location,” something that robotic linguists have long struggled with. There’s no mention of a solid date when it comes to the competition itself, but you can bet we’ll be setting our DVRs whenever it’s announced. Check out a video of the progress after the break.

Big Brother Emergency Calling Sends Ads to Your Car?

Mercedes-Benz_TeleAid_172.jpg

Technology that saves your life could also annoy you to death. Car dealers may soon have a system that lets them send advertising messages via the two-way voice and data telematics system in many new cars. One dealer testing the waters for Mercedes-Benz is Ewing Autohaus in Dallas. It uses Mercedes’ Tele Aid communications feature to tell owners, in their cars, that if they come in for maintenance, they’ll get a free car-cleaning kit, according to Automotive News. But Mercedes says the big brother scenario is far-fetched and is only, repeat only, a single-dealer test.

According to Automotive News, the Autohaus dealership is working on a pilot program with ATX Group, which provides the call center and dispatch services for Mercedes, before it rolls out to other dealers. BMW, Chrysler, GM, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz all have telematics packages with the potential to reach out to captive-audience customers. The pilot program is Mercedes-only.

Codemasters Details Upcoming F1 Racing Sims

Formula_One_PS3.jpg

Codemasters, the game developers responsible for the TOCA series, DiRT, and Grid, have obtained the rights to create a new series of F1 racing games, according to Autoblog. That means that while previous games in the F1 series were only available to Sony console owners (PS2, PS3, and PSP), the new series should be across all platforms.

The first game in the series, F1 2009, will be available for the Nintendo Wii and Sony PSP–nothing earth-shaking there. But for 2010, the game will be in high definition format and be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and also hook into online gaming communities for head-to-head competition over the Internet, according to the report.

The new series will include the latest car tech, including kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS), the latest aerodynamics rules, and simulations of newly constructed tracks in Valencia, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore, the article said. Get those gaming wheels ready.

G.E.: We Can Fit 100 DVDs on a Single Disc

General Electric today announced a new technology it says is capable of fitting 100 DVDs worth of information onto a single standard disc. According to the company, the technology is still in early development. G.E. is looking for ways to produce it at cost effective prices.

The technology, according to The New York Times, utilizes holographic storage. Says the paper,

The data is encoded in light patterns that are stored in light-sensitive material. The holograms act like microscopic mirrors that refract light patterns when a laser shines on them, and so each hologram’s recorded data can then be retrieved and deciphered.

“The price of storage per gigabyte is going to drop precipitously,” G.E. Scientist Brian Lawrence said of the technology.

ZigBee adding IP capabilities to its wireless devices, Texas Instruments likey

We’ve seen ZigBee wireless functionality showing up in everything from remote controls to robots, but apparently that was all just the beginning. The Alliance has announced plans to expand its low-power standards to support Internet Protocol, a move that member-company Texas Instruments is apparently quite pleased about — perhaps seeing an opportunity to make up some of those declining sales in the mobile phone area. IP connectivity in all sorts of random devices should open the door for plenty of exciting and new-fangled connectivity options, all of which can only mean one thing: dung beetle MMO.

Verizon iPhone Could be Here Next Year

verizon-is-awesomeAccording to USA Today, Apple is in late-game talks with Verizon about the iPhone. Specifically, the iPhone could be coming to Verizon’s network as soon as next year, lending some credence to the excited claims made by Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg in the WSJ last week.

This comes, you will remember, barely a week after Apple made an official statement that it would be remaining faithful to AT&T (in the US, at least) for the foreseeable future.

We don’t know which way to jump on this one. It makes sense for Apple to make the iPhone as widely available as possible, and making a CDMA version will open up new markets. And the iPhone is so ridiculously successful that pretty much any carrier would jump at selling it.

On the other hand, multiple carriers in the same country would probably bring at least some small differences in pricing and contracts, which is certainly not the Apple Way. Likewise, unless there was a hybrid GSM/CDMA handset, confusion would ensue at the Apple Store:

Apple employee: “Yes sir, an iPhone. Which network will you be using that on?”.

Customer: “Wait. What? Is the the Microsoft Store?”

We still don’t know for sure when the Apple/AT&T contract expires, or if it even will — maybe it was inked in blood in a Faustian pact. One thing is sure, though — this would be good for the consumer. Multiple carriers means competition and, seamless brand message be damned, the carriers wouldn’t be able to stop themselves from entering a price-war.

Apple and Verizon consider iPhone deal [USA Today. Thanks, all powerful John!]

Canon confirms line defect on G10, denies existence of fourth-dimensional UFOs

Streaky lines on your G10 photos? Don’t call MUFON, hit up your local Canon repair center. The company is acknowledging an issue that results in small, horizontal defects like that pictured above. Apparently such aberrations seem to appear at random, regardless of camera settings, but the affected units’ serial numbers are at least easy to pick out at the read link. Not exactly good news for Canon, hot on the heels of the 50D vertical banding fix, but at least it isn’t attempting some sort of cover-up.

Update: LimeyHoya commented to let us know Canon USA has posted up the same notice, meaning you can now figure out if you’re affected without having to ponder any abstract Google Translate koans.

mypressi TWIST gives espresso addicts an easier way to indulge

You know the story — your daily craving for a shot of espresso hits right around 7:30AM local time, and if you don’t have it in your grasp by 0800 hours, you’re likely visiting the slammer for at least a day or two for barista battery. In a beautiful effort to keep addicts far away from prisons and ever closer to their productivity machines, Espressi has unveiled the mypressi TWIST, which is described as a truly portable espresso maker that delivers top-notch goods without the wait. The secret to the one-pound device is the pneumatic engine that provides constant pressure throughout the extraction cycle, and we’re told that a single CO2 cartridge can provide around eight shots. It’ll hit American shores this fall for $129 — ’til then, it’s on you to keep a local shop on retainer.

Samsungs R522 laptop still not official, gets reviewed anyway

Samsungs R522 laptop still not official, gets reviewed anyway

Waiting for official confirmation on that R522 that was spied a few weeks back? It doesn’t look like you’re going to get it, at least not yet, but that hasn’t stopped TrustedReviews from giving one a proper once-over regardless. The site’s 15.6-inch review unit sports a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T6400 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB disk — plenty of power in a fairly small and nicely styled package. Decent battery life, too, clocking nearly 3.5 hours under mixed use. However, cable-free connectivity options were somewhat less impressive, lacking 802.11N, Bluetooth, and any sort of cellular wireless. So, a solid choice if you’re not looking for the latest in connectivity options or don’t mind toting along an external adapter. Prices are said to be between £550 and £600 ($800 to $875) with availability over there starting next month. Samsung’s still staying mum about a release on these shores.
