Samsung’s rumored I7500 set to be its first Android outing?

We dig Android set rumors, even more so when they’re mumbling about Samsung’s first foray into the land of the Android OS. We’d initially heard Samsung’s S8000 Cubic might well be the first Android set launched, but the::unwired’s reporting that the Samsung I7500 will be the one to watch. While still all rumor and speculation, the I7500 has a mind numbing pile of features, all of which would guarantee us picking this up no matter what OS it’s sporting. Starting with quad-band EDGE, dual-band HSDPA, 8GB of internal storage, a 3.2-inch capacitive OLED display (can we get a wahoo?) 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, and even GPS. The I7500 is scheduled rumored to be exclusive on O2 as early as June this year for €300. That, mes amis, is some seriously tasty rumor magic, here’s hoping it pans out.

NVIDIA’s GT300 specs outed — is this the cGPU we’ve been waiting for?

NVIDIA’s been dabbling in the CPU space behind closed doors for years now, but with Intel finally making a serious push into the GPU realm, it’s about time the firm got serious with bringing the goods. BSN has it that the company’s next-generation GT300 will be fundamentally different than the GT200 — in fact, it’s being hailed as the “first truly new architecture since SIMD (Single-Instruction Multiple Data) units first appeared in graphical processors.” Beyond this, the technobabble runs deep, but the long and short of it is this: NVIDIA could be right on the cusp of delivering a single chip that can handle tasks that were typically separated for the CPU and GPU, and we needn’t tell you just how much your life could change should it become a reality. Now, if only NVIDIA would come clean and lift away some of this fog surrounding it (and the rumored GTX 380), that’d be just swell.

Report: First Android Netbook to cost $250

Nikon’s D5000 DSLR unboxed ahead of schedule

Well, well — what have we here? With 24 hours to go before Nikon’s D5000 hits the streets (at least at Amazon), one lucky soul has managed to stumble upon one early. The D5000 kit, which contains Nikon’s first DSLR with an articulating display, has been officially unboxed in glorious fashion, and Kadath’s Flickr account also shows a few test shots for those curious about image quality. We’re expecting one of these into our own labs any moment now, but for the time being, hit up the read link to enjoy the early-bird spoils.

Facebook’s New Interface Simplifies Profiles

When Facebook moved away from their original interface (back when it was “The Facebook”) people weren’t too happy. Since then it’s gotten a few tweaks here and there, and they’ve added features and of course applications, but the look has generally stayed the same. Facebook is now ready to introduce another big change to the interface and we’re expecting some people to put up a fight! In general people don’t seem to adapt well to change, even if it’s for the better.

Below you’ll find a screenshot of the original Facebook just to bring back old memories:

And of course most of you know what the current Facebook looks like, so here’s what the new Facebook will look like:

One of the first things we noticed is that there will be a lot less on the page to view. They’ve made use of tabs up at the top to switch between things like Info, Photos, and Boxes. There’s also a menu bar up at the top where you’ll find a link to your Friends and a drop-down menu with the applications you currently have. All of these extra clicks to various pages should put a few more bucks in Facebook’s bank with an increase in pageviews, that’s for sure.

The official Facebook Blog has more information on some of the changes, like:

  • Simplified top menu
  • Tabbed profiles
  • “The new wall”
  • The Publisher Box (for adding photos, notes, videos, application content, updating status, etc.)
  • New Application Interactions

The Facebook crew says you can try out the new site simply by visiting http://www.new.facebook.com, except doing this did not give me the new interface. For Ryan it worked, but for me it didn’t. If by visiting the “New” site, you see the same ole’ interface, just keep checking back.

While it might take some adjusting, it will be nice to have cleaner pages with less information to look at. Once they added applications, things started to get way too cluttered on some people’s profiles.

For now users can either use the new (if it’s available to them) or go back to the old, but in the coming weeks everybody will be forced to use the updated interface. Tell us what you think of it…

Toshiba’s 10-inch Dynabook UX netbook gets hands-on treatment

Toshiba’s Dynabook UX (or NB200, if you prefer) just popped on our radar last week, and already we’re seeing netbook craving individuals in Japan get their paws on ’em. The 10-inch machine ain’t too different than the other alternatives out there — save for the N280 processor, which will never show its true potential without a GN40 chipset riding shotgun. At any rate, early impressions of the machine have been rather positive, with onlookers digging the design and the chiclet-style keyboard. Personally, we’re a bit bored from afar, but hit the read link to have a look and make a judgment of your own.

Skytone’s Android-powered netbook to cost around $250

Guangzhou Skytone Transmission Technologies Company, which we will absolutely never call by its full name again, has just dropped a juicy nugget about its forthcoming netbook. If you’ll recall, we recently caught wind of the ARM-based, Android-powered rig (the Alpha 680), which is expected to be a stripped down portable useful for web surfing and light duty Office use. Nixon Wu, Skytone’s co-founder, recently confessed that it’s aiming to sell the machine for around $250, and if all goes well, it should have prototypes ready by June and final products ready for consumption a month or two after that. Call us crazy (or just greedy, really), but we were totally hoping for this to ring up at $199 or less.
