The X-Desk works in much the same way as …

T-Mobile Germany website indicates May launch for Cupcake

It’s not exactly a huge surprise considering that the Cupcake-powered HTC Magic is confirmed to be coming out May 5th, but T-Mobile Germany’s website now looks to have also confirmed that the Cupcake update itself will also be rolling out to G1 users sometime the same month — in Germany, at least. That’ll of course bring with it the much-desired on-screen keyboard, along with video recording, stereo Bluetooth support, and some new integration with Picasa and YouTube, among other fixes and additions. As you can see above, the update will “skillfully” install itself on your G1 as soon as it’s available, so you needn’t do anything except go on about your daily business in the meantime, or check the interwebs furiously for a means of jumping the cue.

Apple Cuts 1,600 Full-time Retail Positions

All things considered, Apple reported some pretty positive second quarter earnings with a profit of $8.16 billion. Still, the company–like pretty much everyone else these days–is suffering the effects of a sour economy. The retail side of things has not been performing so well for the company, with revenue declining $5.9 million from $7.1 million over the same period last year.

As a result, the company slashed some 1,600 full-time jobs in its storefronts–14,000 jobs down from 15,600. The company has also slowed the rate of store openings, to brace for the effects of the downturn, having only opened a single on this year so far.

Here it is, your Madden 10 box art

As far as video game box art goes, no game cover is more touted than the EA franchise Madden NFL football. Every year EA picks a special athlete to grace the game’s cover, forever etching them into video game history. In the franchise’s 21-year history, no …

Record Your World with Mikey

Mikey_iPod.jpgLooking for a better iPod recorder? Try Mikey.

Blue Microphones, better known for its studio mics, has just released Mikey, a versatile microphone for most iPods. Mikey connects to the bottom of your iPod, and is a great choice for anyone who needs to record lectures, interviews, or live music. I love that it’s positionable up to 180 degrees, so you can angle it at whatever you need to record.

The company promises clear stereo recording with Mikey, and offers a user-adjustable gain control. There’s no software required to use the mic, which can record up to four hours continuously. It also includes a speaker, so you can review what you’ve just recorded.

Mikey works with the iPod Nano 2G, 3G, and 4G; the iPod Classic, and the iPod 5G. Sadly, there’s no iPhone support. You can pick one up from the site for $79.99.

Cheap Geek: Dell Inspiron, Oki Multifunction Printer, Garmin Nuvi

dell_inspiron-531.jpg

If you wake every morning thinking “I hope today is a woot-off,” you might be a cheap geek.

1. Has that tax refund check arrived? And are you looking to spend it in a hurry? Dell can help you out. It’s now offering a fantastic deal on the Inspiron 531, a desktop running Windows XP Home on a 1.6-GHz AMD Athlon 2650e processor. You’ll also get 1GB DDR2 SDRAM and a 160GB hard drive. That’s a lot of computing power for little money. The system starts at $299 and is completely customizable, so you can get exactly the specs you need.

2. Want your home office to perform more like a real office? Then get yourself this Oki B2520 multifunction printer. What cheap geek wouldn’t love getting a laser printer for less than the cost of an inkjet? This multi not only prints, but also copies, scans, and faxes. Buy.com has it for $102.99, with free shipping.

3. As the GPS market slows down, deals on navigators get easier to find. For example, Amazon has the Garmin Nuvi 250 for a super-low $114.99, and that includes free shipping. At that price, it’s worth having in the glove compartment just in case you get lost.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCI: dirty Vegas plays Orange UK

Attention, Orange and the random supplier who’s manufacturing these ripoffs: the world has moved on from the original HTC Touch’s design language. Hell, we’ve actually moved on twice now; once to the Touch Diamond, and once to the Touch Diamond2. On that note, we’re not sure what’s possessing a Western European carrier to release a cheesy rip of a such a well-known late model phone — whose manufacturer Orange has a great relationship with, no less — other than the fact that they’re looking to give entry-level customers a really inexpensive way to get into the touchscreen game. Indeed, the prepaid device will apparently run just £48.50 (about $71) when it launches, but in return, you’re only getting a 1.3 megapixel camera, presumably EDGE data, and the mocking of everyone you’ve ever known — including your own mother, who we understand uses an actual HTC Touch.

[Via mobile-review]

Update: If T-Mobile UK is more your style, turns out they’re offering the very same device as the Vairy Touch. Thanks, everyone!
