$99 Blu-ray Players Coming–Thanks, China!

You think Blu-ray’s been seeing a bump in sales lately? Just wait until players drop below $100. This holiday season will no doubt usher in a boom of new Blu-ray owners with the introduction of new players by Chinese manufacturers.

Last year’s holiday season saw players dip below $199. This year, after the introduction of the technology in China, players are expected to half that lower threshold, according to industry insiders like Samsung marketing director, Mark Leathan.

USB touch pad extends multitouch to Windows OS

In yet another edition of “super rad gadgets that’ll never touch American soil,” we present the Diatec SmartTrack Neo USB touch pad. Aside from the Japanese product page, there isn’t much information out there, but we do know that this small USB pad adds multitouch functionality to PCs, which is perfect timing for the upcoming release of Windows 7.

The touch pad is roughly 3 inches wide and an inch long and features two buttons on the bottom as well as a single USB cord that connects it to a computer. Once installed, the device supposedly enables pinching, pulling, swiping, and turning, much like the motions on an iPhone, and it even responds to gestures with more than one finger. Unfortunately, the Web site indicates that the hardware is only compatible with PCs, so Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac Mini users can resume breathing.

Roomba, Terminator Named Robot Hall of Fame Inductees

Roomba.jpgPop open the champagne and pour your hardworking robot vacuum a glass–it’s now a Robot Hall of Fame Inductee.

iRobot’s seven-year-old Roomba is one of five in the class of 2010 inductees into the Robot Hall of Fame, along with NASA’s Mars Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the DaVinci Medical Robot System, Huey, Dewey and Louie from the 1971 Bruce Dern film “Silent Running and the T-800 Terminator from James Cameron’s 1984 film “The Terminator”. A brainchild of the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science, the Hall of Fame, according to a university spokesman, “recognizes excellence in robotics technology worldwide and honors the fictional and real robots that have inspired and embodied breakthrough accomplishments in robotics.”

Sprint debuts 2-in-1 AirCard 402 mobile broadband card

It’s not exactly for everybody, but we have a sneaking suspicion that Sprint’s new Sierra Wireless AirCard 402 mobile broadband card — first spotted last month — will make at least a few multiple laptop owners out there very, very happy. As you can see above, this one can function happily as an ExpressCard one moment and a PC Card the next, with each providing the same dual-band CDMA connectivity and support for EV-DO 1xRTT, Rev. 0, and Rev. A, along with all the other standard features and software you’d expect from a mobile broadband card. Perhaps the best news, however, is the price, which at $99.99 (after $180 instant savings and a $50 mail-in rebate), is pretty much in line with Sprint’s other plan old ExpressCard options.

Concept Device: An eBook Reader For the Blind

brailleebookreader.jpg

Here’s a concept device I think everyone can get behind: At Yanko Designs, a team of four designers are showcasing this Braille ebook reader. According to Seon-Keun Park, Byung-Min Woo, Sun-Hye Woo and Jin-Sun Park, the concept for driving the technology is already here–all that’s needed is a friendly neighborhood investor to toss some money their way.

Electroactive polymers are used to create different letter configurations when the pages are turned. You can find more information–and more shots of the proposed device–here.

Skype’s Popularity Results In Skype “Accessories”

This article was written on September 28, 2006 by CyberNet.

The number of people who use Internet calling services such as Skype are increasing, and along with it, the accessories are too.  For example,  Logitech now has an “Easy Call Desktop” cordless keyboard and mouse option which was designed for those who use the Internet to place phone calls.  The EasyCall Desktop makes it just a bit easier to use services such as Skype because it has an integrated speakerphone, and a headset included to give the convenient hands-free conversation.

The Logitech version will cost around $129.99 and has all of the standard features including the programmable hot buttons.  Along with supporting Skype, it also supports AIM and Yahoo Messenger services with voice (it appears they’re working on the Windows Live Messenger support).

Even Skype has a section on their website dedicated to purchasing products to enhance Skype such as phones, headphones, even a mobile wi-fi phone that would work on any wi-fi network (this product not available yet, only pre-order).

Skype is certainly changing the way that people communicate over the Internet.  You can bet we’ll continue to see the accessories designed to cater to the  online communication business.

Toshiba TG02 and TG03 shots surface

We like where this is headed. Toshiba seems poised to capitalize on its incredibly aggressive TG01 form factor, with the TG02 slated for Q4, and the TG03 for some time after that. We already got the skinny on the new handsets, along with the QWERTY-equipped K01 and K02 counter parts, and now we’ve got a few new shots of the TG series to keep things interesting. It’s all a little low-fi at the moment, but while the TG03 looks like the most basic of renders, the TG02 shot (above) seems somewhat photographic in nature — just think if Mr. Blurrycam had some sort of fixation for dotted lines.

Skytone debuts ARM-based, Android-powered netbook / tablet

Well, after months of nothing but hacks and proof of concepts, we now have not one but two Android-powered netbooks — neither of which are actually available just yet, of course. This latest one comes from Chinese firm Skytone and, unlike the I-Buddie, boasts a slightly more unique convertible tablet design, which the company was apparently able to make happen by cutting corners in every other area. That includes a slightly underwhelming 533MHz ARM processor, a 7-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, a mere 128MB of RAM, 1GB of storage, an SD card slot for expansion, and even optional 3G (although that could just be a dongle). What’s more, it looks like Skytone is saying that the netbook, dubbed the Alpha-680, could sell for as little as $100 if and when it’s actually released — which, as far as we can tell, could happen next week or never.
