Earth Day Celebrated Around the Web

This article was written on April 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

Today is April 22nd which means it’s Earth Day in many countries around the World. It all started in 1970 when the first Earth Day was celebrated to coincide with the environmental movement. Around the web you’ll find a handful of different sites celebrating the day by changing their logo. Social Web Browser Flock even launched a new “Eco-edition” of their browser just in time for the day. It’s got lots of green and comes with some pre-loaded content for those that are conscious of the environment.

Yahoo

Yahoo’s logo changed for the day and it’s actually pretty cool. The screenshot below doesn’t do it justice because Yahoo uses Flash on the site that starts out looking like the normal Yahoo logo but turns into a green animated logo to celebrate the day. Check it out…

Ask.com

Usually Ask.com isn’t one to jump in and change their logo or their site to celebrate any occasions, but today they did. Their focus is on carbon footprints and so their homepage has big footprints at the bottom of the page and they say: “It’s Earth Day! Search for ways to reduce your carbon footprint.”

Google

Of course we all knew that Google would do something, right? They seem to be the ones that started the trend of celebrating special days by changing their logo so here’s what they’ve come up with this year. Compared to Earth Day 2006 and 2007, we’d say this year’s is the best.

YouTube

Following in Google’s footsteps, YouTube is reminding those that visit their site today that it’s Earth Day by changing their logo:

AOL

Even AOL got in on it! As a side note, and a little off-topic, I haven’t visited AOL for quite some time, but boy, does it sure look like Yahoo’s page! AOL, couldn’t you have gotten creative and tried to come up with something unique?

Facebook

Facebook’s way of celebrating the day is by offering a free gift that users are able to give to their friends that’s all about saving energy.

Flock

As mentioned, Flock has come out with a special Flock-Eco Edition. Aside from a special browser, they also note that they give back 10% of their earning to help the environment which is nice. They’ve partnered with some eco-friendly sites and with this particular version of Flock, you’ll receive daily news feeds from those sites which include:

  • TreeHugger, Think MTV, Environmental News Network, Ecorazzi, National Geographic, Green Yahoo!, Grist, Sprig, Planetgreen, and more…

You’ll find the download links here , and this is what it looks like:

New Pre Classic emulator video shows off 3D gaming prowess

The last time we saw the Pre’s Classic Palm OS emulator in action, we had a few lingering questions in our mind, chief among them being how well can it game? From the looks of this latest video, released by Motion Apps to answer that very question, pretty well so far. In addition to confirming sound support for the latest build, we also get a brief glimpse of the software handling 3D driver GTS World Racer. Of course, seeing this makes us even more curious about the gaming potential for the native webOS, but alas, we’re in the cold there. In the meantime, check out some classic 3D racing in the video after the break.

Viliv S5 pre-order details firm up: $599 and it’s yours May 8th

It’s been a long and winding road filled with unboxings, impressions, and comparisons, but it looks like the last few details surrounding the U.S. release of Viliv’s Atom-powered S5 MID have now finally been firmed up. According to retailer Dynamism, the device will be available for pre-order on April 27th (at 1PM Eastern) for just $599, or $50 less than previously expected, with the first orders expected to ship on May 8th. Better still, those that pre-order the S5 will also get a free spare battery, a car kit, and a leather pouch, which Dynamism says is a $135 value. No word on the number of units available in that initial batch but, if the Hong Kong and Korean releases are any indication, they could sell out pretty quickly.

Netflix Blu-ray movies showing up cracked and unplayable?

That’s the word, with a small but vocal group of subscribers claiming their discs are repeatedly arriving with small cracks on their outer edges. It’s unclear what might be to blame, even with the extra coating to prevent scratches on Blu-ray, they could still be susceptible to automated mail processing machines, manufacturing defects or perhaps a spontaneous game of mail Frisbee. The Mars Box blog experienced this issue back in ’07 with the disc pictured above, but in the last few months reports seem to be picking up again. It’s really too bad those extra costs can’t buy tougher packaging like the cardboard slips GameFly uses, but Netflix told Wired the problem is “infinitesimally small” and changing shipping wouldn’t be cost effective. We know plenty of you rent your discs, let us know, have you been afflicted?

1.6 Million Records Stolen from Monster.com

This article was written on August 20, 2007 by CyberNet.

Monster logoThe Washington Post says it best when they say, “Would you like a job with that virus?” Monster.com is known as one of the leading job search engines on the web where people go to find the perfect job. Unfortunately over the last several weeks, those who posted resumes got more than they bargained for and had more than just potential employers looking at their personal information due to malicious ads.

Originally it was reported that over 46,000 people were affected by “tainted advertisements,” but now that number has gone up to over 1.6 million records that were stolen. Symantec security analyst Amado Hidalgo says the new Trojan hose involved is called Infostealer.Monstres. In some situations, users had to click on an ad before the trojan horse went to work, in other situations, the user would just have to view the page displaying the ad.

Hidalgo also said “such a large database of highly personal information is a spammer’s dream. In fact, that’s exactly what the attackers are using their newly-acquired data for. The attackers first gather email addresses and other personal information from resumes posted to Monster.com and then next they will try to infect the computers of those candidates by sending targeted Monster.com phishing mails.”

In this situation, the trojan was looking for security vulnerabilities in web browsers like IE, Firefox, and Opera, as well as Windows Media Player and QuickTime. As always, remember to keep your software up to date! It’s one of the best ways you can protect your data from being stolen.

Thanks for the tip Cory!

Festo shows off robot penguins and other visions of the future

The folks at Festo have already proven themselves to be more than adept some intoxicating, slightly unnerving feats of robotics, but they look to have really outdone themselves with their latest group of creations, which all fall under the banner of the company’s Bionic Learning Network. While they’re all certainly impressive, the real star is undoubtedly the AquaPenguin which, in addition to being creepily realistic, is fully autonomous and even able to outperform its real-life counterpart in a few tasks, like swimming backwards. Of course, Festo apparently couldn’t help themselves and also built a flying, blimp-like AirPenguin, and they applied some of the same basic technology to a number of other devices, including a robot arm that’s precise enough to change a lightbulb, and a freestanding interactive wall that’s sure to spruce up any lobby. Hit up the YouTube link below for a video that provides a brief overview of the whole lot, or head on over to Festo’s site for the even better German version (plus some additional details on the projects themselves).

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXCIX: NokiPhone N3000i dual slider is one part N95, two parts iPhone, and six parts win

Combining two pretty great ideas in a way that is all kinds of illegal in the US, the China-produced NokiPhone N3000i looks to be a pretty straightforward iPhone ripoff with bonus N95-esque dual slider capabilities. The GSM smartphone’s got 3.2-inch QVGA screen, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, dual SIM support, microSD slot, and video recording capabilities. Price of admission is $129 right now, which according to chinagrabber is a hefty discount from its $400 MSRP. Your move, NOKLA.

A New Mountain Bike From One of Europe’s Flattest Countries

Prong_seaotter

MONTEREY, Calif. — The new Pronghorn mountain bike comes from the unlikeliest places – Denmark, one of the flattest countries in the world.

"It’s probably the last place you’d find a mountain bike," said Marcus Crider, owner of Twowheelogic, which is distributing the bike in the United States. "It’s as flat as can be."

The crosscountry racer ($1,900, frame and fork only) sports an unusual design that puts the rear shock above the top tube — a design Crider says offers stability and comfort. The bike rides high and the suspension doesn’t sag.

"It rides like a hardtail," says Crider. "It stresses up like a hardtail. It’s excellent for climbing. It’s almost like having Positraction."

Standard in aluminum, the bike also comes in a carbon fiber mainframe ($2,800 for the full carbon frame and fork).

XO Generation 1.5 promises some beefed up internals while we wait for XO-2 to change everything

We’re pretty stoked to see that upcoming dual-screen sequel to the XO, OLPC’s promised XO-2. Until then, OLPC is sprucing up the insides of its current design with a new VIA C7-M processor that can be clocked between 400MHz and 1GHz depending on the task at hand. Alongside the new processor the “Generation 1.5” model will sport a hot new VX855 chipset that can handle 3D graphics, HD video, and general management duties, and should be able to do it with a smaller footprint and less power consumption. The screen will likely remain the same, but might be tweaked slightly to improve brightness and efficiency, and the whole package should be built with components that will be more likely to drop in price. Developers should get the main board by May, with prototypes for testing going out in August and we suppose wide availability sometime after that.

Bike Designer Fails To Find Fortune With High-End Dog Bowl

Dogbowl_seaotter

MONTEREY, Calif. — This carbon fiber dog bowl by bike designer Sky Yaeger was supposed to be her ticket to a new career – but despite being beautifully made, her $65 Splash-N-Go dog bowl is just not selling.

After decades of designing bikes using exotic materials, Yaeger fell in love with carbon fiber, which is extremely lightweight but tough and sleek. She figured there might be a market for unusual objects made of the aerospace material.

"I just wanted to make stupid shit from carbon fiber," Yaeger joked at the Sea Otter bike show, where she’s showing off a new line of city bikes she’s designed for Swobo.

Yaeger, a slender former racer, is one of the bike industry’s better known designers. A former VP at the famous Italian bike maker Bianchi, Yaeger is credited with kicking off the fixie bike movement after designing Bianchi’s Pista. In 2006, she joined Swobo and launched a line of distinctive and well-received city bikes.

"I’ve been in the bike business for 37 years and I want to get the fuck out," she continued, laughing hard. "This was my ticket. First a carbon fiber dog bowl, then a toilet seat."

Yaeger is joking of course. She’s been good for the bike industry, and the industry has been good to her. But she had 600 dog bowls made in Taiwan a couple of years ago. It was such a large order, she tied up bike production lines. Bike makers couldn’t get their orders filled.

"We couldn’t get frames made and you were getting stupid dog bowls made," laughed Jason Rico, who called by the Swobo booth to say hi to Yaeger. Rico was a product manager with a mountain bike maker at the time.

Trouble is, no one gets the joke. Yaeger’s $65 dog bowls are sitting in boxes in her garage in San Rafael, Calif.

"No one’s got a sense of humor," Yaeger said with a big grin on her face. "No one in their right mind has ever Googled ‘carbon fiber dog bowl,’" she laughed.  "I took out a second mortgage for this?"

She did get one big order from a billionaire who owned an ocean racing yacht with a hull made from carbon fiber. He wanted 12 bowls for his crew to eat cereal out of, but had the nerve to ask for a deal.

Yaeger was outraged. "You have a million dollar boat, you fuck," she said. She gave him the deal.

Splash-N-Go dog bowls can be ordered by calling Swobo at (831) 459-0542.
