RunCore Pro IV SSDs launched, tested, seem pricey

RunCore’s always offered fast SSDs, but we’re not so sure its new 2.5-inch ProCore IV drives offer the right mix of price, performance, and storage for the target market — sure, they’re fast, with up to 240MBps reads and 185MBps writes, but they’re also expensive, starting at $179 for 32GB and quickly ramping up to $599 for 128GB and a whopping $999 for 256GB. That’s a lot of scratch for the average laptop customer, and while the speed gains may be obvious, we’re not so sure the storage tradeoff seems worth it. That said, RunCore’s made it pretty easy to swap one of these puppies in: each drive includes a USB enclosure and cloning software that’ll have you up and running at high speed in a jiff. Yeah, we’re on the fence — check out a video demo after the break and tell us if you think it’s worth it.

Engadget’s recession antidote: win a KORG KAOSSILATOR and a copy of Matt & Kim’s album “Grand”

This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn’t want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back — so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. We’ll be handing out a new gadget every day (except for weekends) to lucky readers until we run out of stuff or companies stop sending things. Today we’ve got something really special for our musician-readers: a KORG Kaossilator Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer, and a copy of Matt and Kim’s album, Grand. Read the rules below (no skimming — we’re omniscient and can tell when you’ve skimmed) and get commenting! Hooray for free stuff! More information — and another photo — after the break.

Huge thanks to Korg for providing the gear!

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for “fixing” the world economy, that’d be sweet too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one (1) KORG Kaossilator and one (1) copy of Matt and Kim’s album, Grand.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until Monday, May, 4th, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

The 404 334: Where may the 4th be with you

Today we celebrate annual Star Wars Day…well, Wilson and I do. Jeff unloads his typical dump truck of hate on our beloved trilogy and a bunch of other stories, including Google Goats, YouTube birthing, Wiki games, and the new Wolverine movie proving errbody wrong!

Google employs goat gardeners

To commemorate Star Wars Day, I’d like to introduce you to Sabersegging, thanks to the folks at Vice Magazine for the story. Sorry about messing up the name in our description, I think Cybersegging is something else entirely. Anyway, check out that video and contact your local Jedi Training Center for more details!

Next, we play some inside baseball with Google and reveal their newest HR pursuits: Google Goats. The software giants just hired a bunch of goats to hang out on the lawns at their Mountain View offices and eat/fertilize the grass. PETA, of course, wonders if the goats will receive a proper pension plan and health insurance options, but we have some better ideas…

Lots of pregnancy stories recently! First we talk about a miraculous birth with the help of Youtube. This story is nutso- a couple decided to have a baby in their home, but when the midwife failed to show up, the husband was forced to consult YouTube for basic birthing instructions and found this video that shows you how to deliver a baby in a vehicle. DISCLAIMER: Not for the faint of heart/stomach, even with the bizarre doll they use to roleplay. We also get another super awesome voicemail about another guy that used The 404 to get him through the stress of childbirth. We think that the mother had a little more, but we’re happy to be here to welcome the young one on the air! Thanks a million for the amazing voicemail, we love hearing stuff like this.

The Pacemaker combines a portable media player with full pro DJ capabilities, including two turntables and a mixer. Its two independent audio channels let you play two tracks at the same time. Click a button for beatmatching, then add crossfades or other effects. Instead of just listening to your music, the Pacemaker lets you interact with it–and also entertain at any event. The original made our list of 10 gadgets for wannabe DJs.

The Pacemaker is part of a larger platform from Swedish company Tonium. It also offers Pacemaker Editor software for free, for both Windows and Macintosh computers, which lets you play music and create your own mixes. There’s also an online Pacemaker Community, where members can upload and share their creations.

Navigon withdraws from GPS business in North America

Man, talk about coming straight out of left field. After blowing it out at CeBIT just two months ago, Navigon has just announced its intentions to pull out of the navigation business here in North America. According to CEO Egon Minar: “Due to the difficult economic environment and the aggressive pricing we have decided to withdraw from the PND business in North America for the time being. We are however not closing down our Chicago office which will continue to serve our automotive and mobile phone businesses in North America.” He did assert that the company would “continue to fulfill all obligations to its existing PND customers in terms of map updates, etc.,” but nothing else on the subject was said. So long, Navigon — we’ll miss your “uber-premium” wares.

BlackBerry Curve Overtakes iPhone in Q1

BlackBerry_Curve_8350i.jpgThe iPhone took a backseat to the BlackBerry in the first quarter of 2009, according to a study by NPD. The Curve 8300 captured the title of America’s best selling smartphone, thanks in no small part to wider carrier availability and Verizon’s buy-one, get-one sale on the handset.

RIM captured three of the top five smartphone spots, coming in third and fourth with the Storm and Pearl, respectively.

The list:

1.) RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
2.) Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
3.) RIM BlackBerry Storm
4.) RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except the Flip)
5.) T-Mobile G1

According to the study, smartphones made up roughly 23 percent of all phone sales in Q1, marking a 6-percent increase from the previous quarter.

Video: YBox2 DIY widget box grows a VGA port

It’s been far, far too long since we’ve heard anything on the YBox front, so it’s with great pleasure we pass along the first major YBox2 mod that we’ve come across. The modders over at adafruit industries have discovered that adding a VGA output to the DIY set-top-box (not to mention adding stereo audio support) is relatively simple, and there’s even a video to prove it. If you’ve been itching to get your hands dirty with an Altoids box, you owe it to yourself to hop on past the break and mash play.

Acer’s AT&T 3G Aspire One landing at Costco on May 11?

Hot on the heels of Radio Shack’s $79.99 AT&T-subsidized Acer netbook incident, it looks like the folks at Costco are looking to get in on the action their own self. According to Boy Genius Report, the 3G-ified, 10.1-inch Aspire One will be available at the box store from May 11th. Employees are currently undergoing intense, military-style training, which will culminate on May 8th, and the netbooks should be hitting electronics kiosks on May 11. Pricing yet to be sussed out, but you’ll know as soon as we do. Promise.
