Laptop Hunters part five: same schtick, different Lauren

Ready for another round of Microsoft’s Laptop Hunters? This time it’s Lauren — not the infamous original LH — and mom seeking the perfect PC to take with her to law school. Top on the list of needs is a portable with speed and battery life, all for less than $1700. Shying away from the more expensive MacBook Pro — a pretty tame jab, much like the last ad — the dynamic duo settle on a Dell XPS 13a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and a $899 price tag. All in all, not the most exciting commercial the series has fostered, and with Apple finally going on the offensive, we really hope the gang in Redmond take it up a notch. See the relatively bite-free video for yourself after the break.

Update: Looks like Microsoft’s pulled the video, probably due to some audio sync issues — can we get Sheila on the case? We’ll let you know when it springs back up.

Update 2: It’s back online and now in HD.

AT&T GoPhone has yet another phone in its lineup, and that’s the basic Samsung A167. It has a VGA camera, dual-band GSM/EDGE, and surprisingly, stereo Bluetooth. There’s nothing much else to write home about here, but since the A167 will cost $70 without …

HP Recalls Overheating Batteries

hp-0514HP has issued a recall for some 70,000 notebook batteries for computers that were sold between August 2007 and March 2008.

The recalled lithium-ion batteries can overheat and pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. A complete list of the models that have been affected by the recall can be found here.

So far the Commission and HP have had two reports of batteries that  “overheated and ruptured resulting in flame and fire that caused minor property damage.”  However, no one was reported injured.

HP’s latest recall brings back memories of exploding Sony batteries about three years ago that affected companies such as Dell. Sony ultimately recalled more than 10 million batteries.

It is not clear who the manufacturer of the  batteries involved in the latest recall are as HP hasn’t disclosed it. Instead the company has offered a free replacement battery to affected consumers.

MSI Unveils Penryn-Powered Wind 200 Notebook

wind-u200Taiwanese manufacturer Micro-Star International has launched yet another Wind product, dubbed the U200. Featuring a 12-inch screen and an Intel Penryn processor, it’s technically a “notbook” (i.e. not a netbook).

Behold, the specs:

  • Display: 12 inches, 1366 x 768 pixels
  • Processor: Intel Penryn SFF ULV
  • RAM: Up to 4GB of DDRII 667/800MHz, 2 DIMM slots
  • Chipset: GS45 + ICH9M-SFF
  • Connectivity: 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, Ethernet
  • Storage: 2.5″ SATA 160GB or 250G hard drive
  • Graphics: Intel GMA 4500MHD
  • I/O: HDMI, D-sub, 3 USB ports, mic input, headphone output, 4-in-1 card reader
  • Webcam: 1.3MP
  • Battery: 3 or 6 cells
  • Dimensions: 11.7″ x 7.5″ x 1.2″
  • Weight: 3.1 pounds

NetbookNews.de took pictures and video of the U200 at its launch event and said overall the notebook isn’t much larger than a 10.2-inch netbook. The keyboard is roomy, and the trackpad is “kind of small for a system of that size.” If you’ll recall, the puny trackpad is the worst part of the MSI Wind U100, which both Charlie Sorrel and I own. It appears MSI hasn’t improved much in that particular area.

No word yet on an official release date or pricing, but we’re going to guess around $700. Check out a video featuring the U200 below the jump.

VTech’s $200 IS9181 WiFi radio now shipping

What, you didn’t even know VTech was dabbling in home audio now? You should be ashamed! All jesting aside, the outfit’s first-ever WiFi radio — which was introduced “way back” at CES — is now shipping. Priced at $199.95, the Wireless Music Hub boasts built-in 3W stereo speakers (not to mention a 10W subwoofer), 802.11b/g support, an FM tuner and an auxiliary audio port. Additionally, it can play back MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV and RealAudio files stored on any nearby WiFi-enabled computer, though it can’t actually get more beautiful with age. Sorry.

DARPA working on “Silent Talk” telepathic communication for soldiers

We’re no strangers to crazy DARPA projects around here, but this one especially strikes our fantastic fancy. The agency’s researchers are currently undertaking a project — called Silent Talk — to “allow user-to-user communication on the battlefield without the use of vocalized speech through analysis of neural signals.” That’s right: they’re talking about telepathy. Using an EEG to read brain waves, DARPA is going to attempt to analyze “pre-speech” thoughts, then transmit them to another person. They first plan to map people’s EEG patterns to his / her individual words, then see if those patterns are common to all people. If they are, then the team will move on to developing a way to transmitting those patterns to another person. Dream big, that’s what we always say!
