WSJ: Steve Jobs Had a Liver Transplant Two Months Ago

Over the past several months, the only headlines Apple CEO Steve Jobs has been making have been directly related to things he hasn’t done–like giving keynotes and just plain appearing in public. Jobs, traditionally the company’s public face, has been almost entirely M.I.A. since first announcing his health leave back in January. With his expected return looming, some more information about Jobs’s recent health battles appears to have leaked out.

The Wall Street Journal (and pretty much every other news outlet at this point) is reporting that Jobs received a liver transplant at a Tennessee hospital two months ago. Apple is continuing the company line, stating, “Steve continues to look forward to returning at the end of June, and there’s nothing further to say.” Jobs himself isn’t returning interview requests.

The Journal‘s source is also reporting that physicians are likely encouraging Jobs to “work part-time for a month or two” after his return later this month. Jobs may also opt to hand off even more responsibility to the company’s COO, Tim Cook.

Giant Cowboys Stadium LED wall caught playing Xbox 360 during downtime Update: Video!

The 72 x 160-foot LED wall at the center of the new Cowboys Stadium is certainly impressive enough when it’s showing game highlights or concert footage, but no giant screen ever truly earns its credentials until it’s been put to some real use: playing video games. Thankfully, Jonas Brothers video director Steve Fatone somehow pulled himself away from concert preparations to do just that earlier this week, and apparently became the first person to ever play Xbox 360 on the display in the process. As you can see above and in the gallery below, the two certainly seem to be made for each other, although it looks like the controller can get a tad touchy if you stray too far while trying to play it.

Update: Our man Steve hooked us up with a video of the rig in action — head after the break to check it out.

[Thanks, Steve; photos thanks to Troy]

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA up for pre-order on Amazon

ASUS’ Eee PC 1005HA (the cooler, younger brother of the 1008HA) impressed us when we first caught a peep of it in the wild. Internally, the two netbooks are identical — but the 1005HA boasts a user-replaceable battery, and leaves out the recessed ports and port doors (which we found to be slightly annoying — though attractive — in our review of the 1008HA). Well, it’s up on Amazon for pre-order now, which means we might be seeing this one sooner rather than later. For now, it’s priced at $349.99, but we’ll see if that price holds when it’s actually available.

We Want to Know: How is the iPhone 3.0 Software Working for You?

iphone3gunbox8.jpg

Have you downloaded and installed the new 3.0 software on your original iPhone or iPhone 3G? Were you among those waiting in line to pick up the new iPhone 3G S? Apple has done a pretty good job selling consumers on the advantages of the handset’s new software, but as is the case with any new products, there are bound to be some bugs.

If you’ve experienced any issues with the software–or even if your experience has been flawless–we’d like to hear from you in our comments section. What sort of issues have you run into? Have you been able to resolve them? If so, how?

The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl

A ticket to ride, $5 to see the Beatles, not bad.

I have no idea why, but “The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl” has never been released on CD in the U.S.

Worse yet, I don’t think it’s going to come out on CD or download when the remastered Beatles albums are released later this year. “Hollywood Bowl” came out on LP in 1977, before the CD was invented, and long after the group broke up. In 1977 all four Beatles were still alive. Luckily enough, it’s not at all hard to score a decent “Hollywood Bowl” LP now.

I can’t think of another major sixties band that didn’t eventually put out a great concert LP. For reasons lost to the mists of time the Beatles live recordings were all pretty poor quality, and these Hollywood Bowl dates are less than stellar-sounding. But the thing is, the performances rock harder than the Beatles ever did in the studio.

Seagate’s FreeAgent Go series bumped to 640GB

Seagate‘s giving its FreeAgent Go drives a fresh new 640GB capacity ceiling, and while it’s not the first external to cross that 500GB threshold, it’s certainly on the thinner end of the totem pole, physically. Nothing revolutionary here otherwise, it’s still the standard USB-connected with up to 480Mbps transfer with multiple color options. Also distinctly the norm? Not a bit of info on pricing or availability, but if Seagate’s posting promotional materials on its main site, we suspect it’s not too far off.

Nerd is the New In for Mens Fashion

geek%20cool.jpgjournalgazette.net: Now that the cool-guy uniform – skinny jeans, layered T-shirt, tailored vest and stylish scarf, all in shades of gray and black – has reached every mall in the country, the trendsetters who started it have moved on.

And they’re going somewhere that few others can: They’re going geek chic.

This means adopting pieces that can be downright nerdy on almost everyone else, but transforming it with confidence and a good eye to make a bow tie the hippest thing around. Think Justin Timberlake – he’s the geek-chic role model cited by fashion experts.

They’re making a sort of anti-fashion statement, fashionably, says LeAnn Nealz, chief design officer of American Eagle, which is going with the look for fall.

“It’s for the guy who wants to be different, but it’s cool-looking. These are guys who might have a beard or put Clark Kent glasses on. It’s a preppy geek, very Thom Browne-ish, but I think the celebrities interpreted it and made it more accessible.”

iPhone 3GS data isn’t really faster than the 3G’s in Chicago

There’s been talk the last couple days about the fact that there really isn’t anywhere in the States to take advantage of the blazing 7.2Mbps downlink connection supported by the iPhone 3GS — except for one great hope, one diamond in the rough that could become a shining destination for 3GS owners the world over. That destination would be Chicago, where AT&T fired up 7.2Mbps trials late last year, and the hope was that they might be letting lay folk (like us) in on the action in time for the 3GS release. Well, we’ve been running side-by-side tests today, and the short answer is that we’re clearly not accessing 7.2 — granted, the 3GS is getting marginally faster speeds both up and down, but we figure this can easily be attributed to the new model’s faster processor because a doubling of the downlink pipe simply doesn’t account for a 100kbps bump in speed (latency was all over the map on both phones, for the record). If you’re holding out on upgrading from a 3G to a 3GS, go ahead and crack a smile — because for now, anyway, this is one spec bump that means precisely zilch in the real world.

Where Do You Print Your Digital Photos?

This article was written on December 27, 2007 by CyberNet.

snapfish

Recently I saw that HP’s photo service, Snapfish, offers prints for just 9¢. What a deal, huh? I looked into signing up for an account and it said that my first 20 photos were free, and then after that, each 4 x 6 inch print would be 9¢. That got me wondering what other services charged, and which ones you all use. I set out to find all of the basic pricing from the major services and this is what I found:

ServiceSizePrice
Snapfish4×6
Wal-Mart4×6 (home delivery)
Shutterfly4×612¢
Kodak Gallery4×615¢
Walgreens4×619¢

From the looks of it, Wal-Mart and Snapfish are the cheapest route to take if would like your digital photos printed. It’s amazing how affordable photo printing has become and how convenient it is to have them printed.  There’s no more dropping off rolls of film at the store and going back later to pick them up, you just upload your photos to one of these services and wait for them to be delivered to your doorstep.

So which service do you use to print your digital photos?

Pwnage Tool for iPhone OS 3.0 now live, ultrasn0w still on standby

That iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak we saw the iPhone Dev-Team pull off earlier this week? It’s out now, or at least, part of it is. Pwnage Tool is now flooding torrents, but there’s lots of caveats here. Most importantly, this isn’t Ultrasn0w, which means if you’re wanting to use your toy on T-Mobile or another unofficial carrier, be patient — it’s also worth noting that the jailbreak doesn’t jibe with yellowsn0w, so those who rely on it should stay away for the time being. No compatibility with the 3G S, or at least, it probably hasn’t been tested… we wouldn’t recommend anyone setting the precedent here. You’ll need Mac OS X to run it, with QuickPwn for Mac and Windows coming further down the line. Ultrasn0w is also due out at some indeterminate future, so that all said, if you’re just needing right now a jailbroken device with spotlight functionality, hit up the read link for all the pertinent details. It should goes without saying, but they’re might a few negative side effects to it, and one of the big ones we heard is that YouTube might be fubar’d at the moment.
