Mechanical cheetah comin’ atcha!

Actually, it’s just a sculpture with articulated joints, but by all the gods of steampunk, it looks glorious. The product of 60 hours’ labor and a selection of used transmission parts, disemboweled household appliances and 20-gauge steel, the mechanical cheetah stands 24-inches tall and 50-inches long. It looks like a stripped down robocat skeleton, and its joints can be maneuvered to mimic the movements of the real feline or to strike some downright awesome poses. Hit the read link for video of the mech cheetah simulating a run, as well as creator Andrew Chase’s thoughts on the project, or click past the break for more images — including a bonus snapshot of a mech giraffe.

Mysterious Cable-Tidy Hawked by Superheroes

cablox

For a product which lets obsessive compulsive neat freaks indulge their non-optional behaviour, the Cablox product pages offer strangely little in the way of real information. Seriously. Who decided that a cable-management device should be marketed by badly drawn superheroes?

Only when you click (methodically, of course) through the world map of dealers do you discover anything. The lone supplier is called AV Cables and lives in Denmark. Once there, you will discover the details.

The Cablox is a 4×4 inch square covered with plastic nodules. Peel the back and stick it to the desk or wall and you can thread cables through and have them kept firmly in place until you need to move them around. The Cablox ships in packs of two and from the pictures you can see that stretching cables between them gives the impression of a home made, cabled circuit.

What we like most is this easy-removal feature, something tricky with solutions which bundle cables together. Actually, scratch that. What we really like the most is the price. At 149 Danish Krone, these cost just $20 for two. All we need to do is wait for the super heroes at the factory to ship them overseas.

Raon Digital: maker of UMPC monstrosities meets its maker?

There’s nothing official yet, but evidence is mounting to suggest that Raon Digital has closed up shop in similar fashion to OQO before it. Following rumors of bankruptcy and anecdotal observations of limited stock and reduced service, all Raon Digital communications have gone silent and the website’s been taken offline. If true, then the demise will be met with styli held at half mast by UMPC enthusiasts who were particularly fond of the overpriced ($879 at launch) and problematic Everun Note “premium” netbook. For everyone else, rejoice, your fears of a Vega 2 may have been assuaged.

Nike announces updated Nike+ SportBand

The original Nike+ SportBand was pretty well received when it rolled out last year, but time marches on, and Nike’s now back for another go ’round with a slightly updated model, plus a few other bonuses for the runners and walkers out there. In addition to some new two-tone color schemes, the updated Nike+ SportBand packs an improved screen with a white background for better visibility, along with a welded seal for water resistance and, of course, all the usual Nike+ features that can be used in conjunction with iPod nano, iPod touch, or iPhone (though you can also just use the device on its own). According to Boing Boing Gadgets’ just-published review of the device (linked below), all of that is “pretty rad” and, at just $59, is certainly affordable, especially considering that it can also double as a watch. What’s more, Nike’s also announced that it has merged its existing nikeplus.com and nikerunning.com sites into one site, and it’s dropped word that an iPhone / iPod touch-specific website is also in the works, although there’s no word on a launch date for it just yet.

Cowon S9 pales in white

It’s hard to beat the chrome and titanium black versions of the Cowon S9 players in terms of aesthetic design. And black is always the best choice to frame its high-contrasting, 3.3-inch AMOLED if you’re the type who likes to see the display fade into the device during particularly dark video sequences. Still, choice is good, and white DAPs are trending (again) so why not ceramic white? It’s not like the S9’s viewable display actually stretches end-to-end like you might assume.

Samsung’s SyncMaster 80 series LCD monitor stands above the rest

It’s a simple idea, sure, and it’s far from new, but putting an LCD on a telescoping mount offers incredible convenience. As such, this Samsung SyncMaster 80 series professional LCD monitor allows for a more natural secondary display perched directly above your open netbook or can be spun into a portrait orientation for those looking to go vertical. The 80’s are available in either 20- (F2080) or 23-inch (F2380) configurations offering a 3000:1 contrast ratio, 178-degree viewing angle, narrow 15-mm bezel, and cover nearly 100% of the RGB color space. Priced in Korea at ₩378,000 (about $287) and ₩457,000 (about $347) when released later this month. See the Sammy pulled into a frontside vert after the break.

Leaked Samsung YP-M1 shows a more colorful spin on its DAP lineup

We can’t say we’ve ever been too excited by Samsung‘s Yepp series — not that it’s bad, just nothing particularly worth writing home about. If this pic is any indication of what’s to come, however, we are suddenly a bit more interested. The story starts in late June, where an Anything but iPod forum member found a Bluetooth SIG for a then unknown “Samsung MP3 Player” with a 3.3-inch widescreen display and the name YP-M1. Then, just a few days ago on the same thread, a newcomer posts the above picture, presumably being the M1 itself. From what we can glean, it’ll be a touch screen with a built-in mic (for the voice recorder) and support for flash. That’s not a lot to go by, frankly, but it’s hard to see where Sammy’s P series would fit with this on the horizon.

[Thanks, Yuki]

CyberNotes: Ahh… What was Life Like Before the Computer

This article was written on May 25, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Funny Friday

This week I came across a website called Computer Stupidities that is filled with true stories (most of them anyways) of experiences people have had dealing with those who aren’t… quite… computer literate. I’m sure many of you have your own  “stupidities” or funny stories to share (feel free to) but that’s not what today’s article is about. As I was reading through some of the stories, I thought of two forwarded emails I received several weeks ago that I thought were worth sharing.

I don’t have the original source for either of them, so if you know where they originated from, let me know.

Life Before the Computer:

An application was for employment
A program was a TV show
A cursor used profanity
A keyboard was a piano!

Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account
And if you had a 3 1/2 inch floppy
You hoped nobody found out!

Compress was something you did to garbage
Not something you did to a file
And if you unzipped anything in public
You’d be in jail for awhile!

Log on was adding wood to a fire
Hard drive was a long trip on the road
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a backup happened to your commode!

Cut – you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue
A web was a sipder’s home
And a virus was the flu!

I guess I’ll stick to my pad and paper
And the memory in my head
I hear nobody’s been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!

Computercomic

And along the same lines: Birth by Computer…

Son says: Daddy, how was I born?

Dad says: Ah my son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway…

Well you see, your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on MSN. Then I set up a date via email with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe.  We sneaked into a secluded room where your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive.

As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a blessed little popup appeared and said: You’ve got Male!

And so, your best computer stupidity stories are?

Blockbuster OnDemand en route to Samsung HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and home theater systems

Questionable longevity or no, Blockbuster’s taking some strides to get itself firmly into the video on demand business, and this latest announcement will go a long way with that. The company announced that it’s integrating its OnDemand service into Samsung HDTVs, home theater systems, and Blu-ray players starting Fall 2009. Better still, those with LED HDTVs series 7000 or above, LCD / Plasmas series 650 or above, and select 2009 Blu-ray players / theater systems can get the service later via firmware update. It’s still got a ways to go if it wants to catch up to Netflix, but every little bit helps, right?
