Ask Engadget: Best wireless laptop / mobile mouse?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from K.arts, who’s clearly too pompous (or just frightened by the thought of carpal tunnel syndrome) to use that excuse-for-a-trackpad on his / her laptop.

“I’ve been looking for a decent wireless mouse for my laptop. Big fan of Logitech here, and I’m not so keen on Microsoft mice, but I’m very open to suggestions. I’m digging the Logitech VX Nano — compact size + receiver, fancy scroll wheel and additional buttons. What do you suggest? I’ve heard bad things about Bluetooth mice, so I’m considering avoiding those unless someone can convince me otherwise. Price? Just not too expensive. Thanks.”

So, jet-setters — what mouse gets the nod when you travel? Is Bluetooth really that bad these days? Drop some knowledge during your next layover, won’t you?

Verizon CEO doesn’t care about landlines anymore, feels ‘liberated’ by new outlook

Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg isn’t too upbeat on the future of landlines, telling the audience at a Goldman Sachs investor conference today that the company is just not interested in telephones connected with wires. The chief exec of one of the nation’s biggest telecommunications firms continued with his gospel, saying his “thinking has matured” and that trying to predict when the dwindling landline business will plateau is akin to “the dog chasing the bus.” He says the new way of thinking is “liberating,” but of course, endeavors like the Hub technically don’t count as landlines to the company since it’sVoIP, and the coupled with its continued success as the largest cellular provider in terms of subscriber base, yeah, we’re sure it’s not too tough a pill to swallow. So how abut ramping up FiOS installations just a wee bit faster, eh Ivan?

Scientists set lasers on cells, end up playing Pong

Researchers have devised plenty of innovative ways of viewing living cells, but their options are a bit more limited when it comes to actually manipulating cells without, you know, destroying them. Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles have now come up with one promising new possibility, however, using lasers instead of the fixed electrodes more commonly used today. Those, as you might expect, don’t hit the cells directly, but are rather used to shine light on a “high-tech Petri dish,” which has a grid of light detectors built into its floor and sets of transparent electrodes on the top and bottom. When lit up in a pattern of a circle or square, the cells can then be isolated and moved about at will or, conceivably, even be used for a game of Pong. Check out the video after the break to see for yourself.

Gene Roddenberry’s Macintosh 128 to be Auctioned

computer-system

A piece of computer and science fiction history will go on auction next month: An early Macintosh computer, which belonged to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

The computer, with the serial number F4200NUM0001, was a gift to Roddenberry from Apple.

serial-numberThough the computer was earlier believed to be an Macintosh Plus,  it is an is an early production Macintosh 128 (#776).

Despite the 0001 serial number, the computer is not the first one manufactured by Apple, says Profiles in History,  an auctioneer of Hollywood memorabilia, which will be taking bids for the computer.

The computer for auction has a 9-inch display, 3.5-inch floppy drive and includes the short keyboard, external floppy drive, mouse and padded carrying case with Apple logo.

“Gene Roddenberry’s vision inspired countless people to pursue careers in science and aerospace.  This milestone computer, given to Gene by Apple’s innovators, is a symbol of this synergy,” said Joe Maddalena, president of Profiles in History.

The Mac is expected to fetch between $800 to $1,200.

The story has been updated to correct the information initially released by the auction house that the computer was the first Macintosh Plus manufactured by Apple.

Snow Leopard’s Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL boost video encoding app by 50 percent

It’ll take some time before we see the true impact of OpenCL and the newly-open-sourced Grand Central Dispatch on OS X, but we’re definitely intrigued by this early report from Christophe Ducommun, developer of MovieGate, who says that shifting his app to use the new tech has increased performance by around 50 percent on the same hardware. Testing on a 2007 2.66GHz quad-core Mac Pro with a GeForce 8800GT, MovieGate MPEG-2 encode speeds went from 104fps under Leopard to 150fps under Snow Leopard, and decoding CPU usage dropped from 165 percent to 70 percent. Now, yes, that’s just one app, and most users don’t have four cores to play with, but it’s still an eye-opening result, and we’re definitely hoping it’s the start of a trend.

Pentax rolls its own colorware for the Pentax K-x DSLR

Not content with the already generous black, white, red, or navy blue options Pentax is offering on its new K-x DSLR? Then it looks like your persistence has finally paid off for once, as Pentax has now rolled out its own Colorware-type service for the camera — in Japan, that is. That’ll let you choose from twenty different colors for the body of the camera and five for the grip (lens colors are apparently “coming soon”) and, of course, any combination of the two (like the eye-catching number we whipped up above). Best of all, it seems that the customization options are available at no extra cost, other than the hours you’ll spend agonizing over your choice of colors.

[Thanks, Rye]

Palm Abandons Windows Mobile

Another one bites the dust. A few months ago, Motorola’s consumer handset division said they were ditching Windows Mobile for an all-Android approach. In an earnings call today (transcribed by Business Insider), Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein said the makers of the Windows Mobile-powered Treo Pro and WebOS-powered Palm Pre are abandoning WinMo for an all-WebOS lineup.
Palm built their first Windows Mobile Treo, the 700w, in 2006 in an attempt to appeal to Microsoft-oriented business customers. But their most recent entries in the line didn’t get much traction in the US market. The Treo 800w wasn’t a strong performer or seller, and the Treo Pro got good reviews, but didn’t really take off either.
Windows Mobile may be losing some partners, but HTC, HP, Toshiba, LG and Samsung are still committed to producing phones with Microsoft’s OS. Windows Mobile 6.5 will launch on October 6 with a range of new devices, Microsoft has said. Still, it’s never good when one of your manufacturer partners drops out.
