BlackBerry Curve 8530 impressions
Posted in: BlackBerry, Features, hands-on, impressions, RIM, Today's Chili, verizon, Verizon Wireless, VerizonWireless, vzw
We don’t know, but it seems like RIM has enlisted a couple more CDMA engineers because the gap between new devices launching on GSM and then making their way to CDMA has been getting noticeably smaller over time. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 was launched on T-Mobile only a few short months ago, and it’s already made its way to both Verizon and Sprint. It’s not the same powerhouse as its older sibling the Tour, but this device packs a heck of a lot of punch into a very pocketable package. Read past the break for our extended impressions.

Watch Your World with Swann and the iPhone
Posted in: dvr, iPhone, Today's ChiliLooking for home security? Swann debuted a powerful system today that lets you monitor your home or business with an iPhone. The Swann DVR4-2500 Security Recorder Kit comes with a DVR, four indoor/outdoor cameras with night vision, a remote, mouse, and all necessary cables and connectors. What really impresses, though, is that it offers remote viewing of either live or recorded video from an iPhone. Not only can you check out the live stream from any of the cameras on your system, but you can also review saved footage.
The cameras record in H.264 and the DVR has a 500GB hard drive, which is enough to store 30 days of footage from continuous recordings. The drive also has a USB port, so you can backup footage you want to save longer. The system connects to the Web, and footage can be viewed remotely from a computer as well as an iPhone. The kit will cost $699 when it’s available in January.
Nook 1.1 update hitting now
Posted in: Android, barnes and noble, barnes noble, BarnesAndNoble, breaking news, BreakingNews, nook, Today's Chili, update
Right on schedule, the Barnes and Noble Nook is kicking out a software update (we rebooted to get the download to start). We’ve heard this will fix some of the issues we had with the unit in our review — but we’ll update you once we’ve had a little time to play around with it.
Some things we’ve noticed so far:
- Page updating on the E Ink display does seem to be a tiny bit faster. Nothing mindblowing, but a little bit better.
- B&N has fixed the page numbering issues. There is now a clear number and progress bar along the bottom of the screen.
- Overall the navigation and color screen loading times seem improved. The experience is definitely faster — even scrolling through book covers seems a bit improved.
- There is still pausing and lag in the UI. This isn’t a sea change, but it’s clear they’ve cleaned some elements up.
[Thanks, anonymous tipster]
Update: You can take a look at all the changes right here.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 hits the FCC again, this time with AT&T’s 3G bands
Posted in: Android, ericsson, sony, Sony Ericsson, SonyEricsson, Today's Chili, xperiaYes, you might recall a version of Sony Ericsson’s mighty X10 getting FCC approval last week — but this one isn’t quite the same. This time around, we’ve got WCDMA 850 / 1900 accompanying the quadband EDGE, which is heartwarming news for anyone on AT&T, Rogers, Bell, or Telus, though the complete lack of branding on the FCC’s test unit leaves us to speculate wildly over which of those carriers (if any) will brand the unit — and more importantly, whether any will be on shelves before frickin’ 2011. In the meantime, we’re guessing SonyStyle sales are a lock — so get your save on.

Lacie’s USB 3.0 RAID Drive is Desk-Burning Fast
Posted in: Accessories and Peripherals, storage, Today's Chili, Usb3.0The folks in Lacie’s hard drive research kitchen have a need. A need (dramatic pause) for speed. And a need that they have managed to sate with the shiny new USB 3.0 2Big RAID drive.
Not happy with the already huge speed-jump gained by switching from boring old USB 2.0, the 2Big throws in a RAID 0/1 setup to open the throttle even further, striping the information across two drives to reach a blistering 275MB/s burst speed. Compare that to USB 2.0’s pedestrian theoretical maximum of 480 Mb/s. Notice the lowercase b in the latter, which stands for bits not bytes. This is, Lacies says, fast enough to throw many HD streams around at once, editing and watching in full resolution at the same time.
For you and me it means less waiting when, erm, borrowing our friends’ movie collections.
The 2Bigs will be on sale early in the new year, for a presumably high price-point, and will come in sizes up to 4TB. Of course, this will be rather pointless unless you have a computer capable of using USB 3.0 peripherals at full speed.

Ricoh GR Digital III adds splash of blue for Stussy Special Edition
Posted in: point and shoot, PointAndShoot, Today's ChiliIf Ricoh’s classically attired GR Digital III filled your conservative heart with joy, you may want to look away now. Fashion brand Stussy is celebrating its forthcoming 30th anniversary by partnering with Ricoh to offer a Special Edition run of the GRD III. Limited to 500 units, these cameras will be almost identical to the original, save for the luminous blue highlights and the use of Stussy’s font. Still, if you’re into limited production runs or just can’t get over the awesomeness of having XXX imprinted on your camera — maybe you’re from Amsterdam — you can grab one in early February for ¥99,750 ($1,100). Hey, nobody said being ultracool was going to be cheap. One more pic after the break.

Next-gen Ford Sync adding WiFi hotspot capabilities, you provide the 3G modem
Posted in: Ford, sync, Today's Chili
Sure, you could go the easy route and pick up a MiFi, but if you’re serious about your on-the-road wireless broadband, you should probably buy an entire car. Ford’s next generation of Sync systems will have built-in WiFi and the capability of sharing a 3G connection with the car’s driver-defined white list of approved devices. It’s a bring-your-own-3G-card affair (you jack into the Sync’s USB plug), and sounds like a nice way for Ford to get you to pay for a 3G connection that could theoretically fuel some of those upcoming Sync apps. The second generation of Sync is due to launch next year, and we should be seeing plenty of it at CES in January: Ford’s CEO has the opening keynote.
