Nintendo trademarks ‘Zii’ over in Japan, Creative is like ‘zaywha?’

Here’s an interesting one. Siliconera has dug up what it claims to be a Japanese trademark for the term “Zii,” and contrary to what you may expect, the application wasn’t filed by Creative. We double checked the database, and sure enough, the paperwork went through on October 30th — which almost certainly means that this was more than just some day-late attempt to fend off the next-generation of KIRF Wii consoles. There’s obviously no way to tell what the Big N has in mind here, nor if this will cause any kind of friction between it and Creative, but we’ll certainly be keeping an ear to the ground for more. Who knows — maybe the Zii is that HD Wii we’ve all been clamoring for since November of 2006. Or maybe it’s nothing at all.

Update: We’ve done a bit more digging, and it looks as if this here filing may simply be a renewal of a 2006 trademark request. Moreover, we’ve found Nintendo trademarks in Japan for Cii, Bii, Oii and Yii, so it seems the company may just be on some sort of rampage in order to cover its tracks in one form or another.

Keystick: Collapsing Keyboard Concept Folds Like a Fan

keystick1

The Keystick is less a folding keyboard than a stacking keyboard. The overlapping sections slide over one another to turn a small, oblong bar of plastic into a ridged keyboard, complete with neat pop-out USB dongle to plug into your computer.

Unless you are using a keyboard-ally challenged netbook, we wonder who would actually need a portable keyboard these days — pretty much any laptop has a perfectly good one, and if you’re docking the notebook to a desktop setup at the office, you can just use a real, full-sized keyboard.

This one certainly looks great, though, apart from the weird retro sci-fi text along the bottom (None Bacteria Project refers to the use of personal keyboards and not an anti-germ coating). You can’t buy it, as the Keystick is a concept design. A quick note to designers Yoonsang Kim and Eunsung Park: make one that can hook up to my iPod Touch. I’d buy one of those in a second.

iriver’s minimalist styled and flamboyant batteried E30 player now available

iriver's minimalist styled and eternally batteried E30 player now availableJust a few days after iriver’s E30 was spotted doing a domino impression in China we’re happy to say the thing is now making an appearance in American stores — or at Amazon, at least. The smallest of the three couldn’t be bothered to make the trip, leaving only 4GB and 8GB models selling for $59 and $79, respectively. The little 1.8-inch player is just .3-inch thick, supports a plethora of media formats and, with 52 hours of battery life, should let you sample each and every one of them between recharges. It’s a lovely, understated thing and would make a wonderful stocking stuffer — though to be honest it would only really stuff the socks of those with very tiny feet.

A.C. Ryan’s Playon!HD Mini player is tiny, still pushes 1080p worth of pixels

A.C. Ryan's Playon!HD Mini player is tiny, still pushes 1080p worth of pixels

Looking for an… alternative after being given a 1080p-streaming brick by Western Digital earlier this month? A.C. Ryan has a new option, the Playon!HD Mini. It’s a smaller version of the bigger Playon!HD that seems to lose only its internal drive bay, card reader, and €50, meaning this one retails for €99 — about $144. Yes, a good bit more than the WD TV, but it hits all the right marks, including 1080p output over HDMI or component, support for streaming media or USB mass storage, and even the ability to tune into Shoutcast and other undisclosed “internet feeds.” The company also promises “very active new firmware releases” which, without a little restraint, could be a recipe to repeat WD’s disaster.

[Thanks, Gavie]

Better Mousetrap: Faster, Stronger, Shinier

People have been inventing non-lethal and “humane” mousetraps for years. Some are worse than the traditional cheese and sprung-steel spine-snapper. The sticky-board, for example, which is supposed to immobilize the rodent but instead presents you with a live mouse staring pleadingly, all four of his legs chewed through in a desperate attempt to escape.

The Better Mousetrap doesn’t bother with innovation. It just throws a lot of tech at the same old trap we have known for years. Designed and built by tinkerer Jake Easton, the machine is deliberately over the top in its operation. Power it up with a key and watch the pressure-meter leap to attention. When the mouse comes in to nibble the cheese, the “Detect” light flicks on and, moments later, the bar snaps down delivering a vertebrae-shattering crunch of force (102-pounds). The build photos show the crazy attention to detail: This polished aluminum case isn’t just pretty on the outside — take a look inside and you’ll see something as neat and carefully designed as the interior of a Mac Pro.

Is this trap humane? No. Efficient? Not really. Is it an awesome, shiny, mouse-murdering machine? Hell yes!

The specs:

Pneumatic Cylinder: 1/2” Bore with 3/4” Stroke

Air Pressure (Max): 60 PSI

Strike Force at 40 PSI: 102 lbs

Key Lock Switch and Manual Hammer Override

Visual Monitoring: Power, PSI, and Armed – Detect – Fire

Case Construction: 6061 0.25” Polished Aluminum

Inputs: 12VDC and Air Line

Dimensions: 12” x 6” x 2.5”

Weight: 5.5 Pounds

Sony NWZ-S745 on sale in Canada, US given cold shoulder

We don’t know about you, but every time we hear of a Walkman, we think of the old school cassette players, and are left strangely disappointed by the slinky modern variants and their tons of storage. The 16GB S745, which has absolutely nothing to do with Mickey Mouse we assure you, has entered North American retail channels, only it seems to have skipped the US for its more peace-loving neighbor up north. Eagle-eyed Canadian shoppers have spotted the more advanced version of the S740 on sale in Sony Style stores (for 200 CAD or 188 in real American currency), replete with a 2-inch screen, noise-canceling earphones, and an unhealthily thin case. Still, suspicions abound that Sony is merely waiting for CES to roll around to make its big US unveiling, but if you really can’t wait it’s not like driving up to Canadia would be that terrible anyway.

Crave giveaway of the day: Energizer grab bag

Today’s Crave giveaway is a grab bag of Energizer accessories.

Nokia N900 coming to Vodafone UK in January 2010

Quick and dirty bit of news for you lovely subjects of the United Kingdom and independent spirits of Ireland: Vodafone’s online store is showing the much hailed N900 as an option, with handsets expected at some point next month. The Irish arm of the carrier had already admitted it’ll be offering the device, and we foresee the two launching the handset simultaneously early in the new year, with regrettably little competition from the other UK carriers. As Electric Pig reported when the N900 first started shipping, only O2 replied with a “not yet,” while Orange and T-Mobile were presumably too busy making out to respond.

[Thanks, Rock]

Jake Easton’s Better Mousetrap leaves no country for old mice (video)

If Cormac McCarthy was an inventor of gadgets instead of words then this better (measured in awesome) mousetrap might have been the result. Instead, honors go to Jack Easton, a man known to kill ordinary mice using compressed air. No, really. The device above feature a pneumatic cylinder that brings down the death hammer with a strike force of 102 pounds after it senses a nearby pest. Poor fake mouse: delivered a fortune that was not his own. See all the fun after the break.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Tokujin Yoshioka in his home/studio in Daikanyama during one of our client Trend Tours in 2007, and it still ranks in our top five best creative sit-downs ever.
