Project Natal to focus on custom-made ‘experiences,’ will tolerate conventional games too
Posted in: gaming, Microsoft, Today's Chili, xbox, xbox 360, Xbox360Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has opened up to our buddies over at Joystiq about the future direction of Projection Natal, and the big takeaway from their chat is that Redmond intends to use the new hardware primarily for “brand new experiences” designed specifically for it. Essentially, this means the majority of Natal-enabled games will be Wii-like in their focus and promotion of motion as the control scheme, but before you dive into a vortex of panic, there were also reassurances that “developers will have that out there at their fingertips if they want to enable those features.” We now know that 10 to 15 percent of the Xbox 360’s processing power will be sucked down by Natal, which may or may not be a reason for this shift away from what was expected — layering Natal on top of games as an alternative control scheme — to this shpiel about “unique” experiences. Either way, so long as we get to play Burnout on this thing, we could care less what others do with it.

This is It Blu-ray release debuts movieIQ Sync, brings more Michael Jackson info to your iPhone or PC
Posted in: blu-ray, Today's ChiliUnfortunately, the most telling element of this Blu-ray news is that it didn’t merit a mention during Sony’s CES keynote, but a new BD-Live feature will be included on This is It. movieIQ Sync updates the original by allowing users to pull up additional movie info on a PC or iPhone synchronized with the movie — we’re guessing the recently released FBI files won’t be included — without it popping up on the television. The other new feature is the ability to create & share customized playlists of the songs featured in the flick. We’ve been waiting for an event that would change both the reality and perception of internet connected features on Blu-ray — and there’s still some hope — but this probably isn’t it.

Gibson’s Robot Guitar may have gotten off to a head start, but EverTune is here at CES with an automatic guitar tuner of its own that promises to keep your guitar in tune forever. To do that, EverTune makes use of a simple mechanism that relies on springs to maintain the same amount of tension on each string as the tuner post loosens, which should ensure that your guitar won’t go out of tune even while playing (something that other self-tuning guitars can’t account for). Unfortunately, EverTune isn’t ready to announcing anything about availability (or pricing, for that matter), but it saying it will “soon be available on a wide range of electric guitars,” and that it’ll also be available as an installation kit through select retailers.

Posted in: europe, germany, nav, Today's Chili, uk, united kingdom, UnitedKingdomRemember Galileo, Europe’s proposed GPS-like satellite navigation system? It’s back in the headlines, and according to the Telegraph, UK-based Surrey Satellite Technology and Germany’s OHB System have jointly secured €566 million (that’s $815 million in US currency) to build 14 more satellites. The funding continues until 2013, whereby 22 satellites will be order. Full satellite navigation requires 27, and ultimately the European Union wants 32 technological waypointers. Launch date? Apparently 2014 — we’re hopeful, but this road has been wrought with delays before.

Study finds cellphone use may fend off effects of Alzheimer’s disease
Posted in: medical, research, study, Today's ChiliCould cellphone radiation actually be good for you and bad for you at the same time? It might, according to a group of researchers at the University of South Florida, who say that tests on mice suggest that long-term cellphone use might actually help fend off some of the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. That, as you might have suspected, is the exact opposite of what the researchers expected to find, and they say that exposure to electromagnetic waves from cellphones could both prevent some of the effects of Alzheimer’s if the exposure is introduced in early adulthood, or potentially even reverse some of the impairment among those already memory-impaired. Needless to say, the tests are still in the earliest of stages, but the researchers are apparently planning on modifying the experiment to try to speed up the results, and eventually expand it to include tests on humans. Tests on mice still found cellphones to be an impairement while driving.
[Thanks, Antonio]
