‘Major’ Apple announcement coming January 27th, devs already working with beta SDK (update: shipping in March)

According John Paczkowski over at All Things D, Apple is planning a “major product announcement” for Wednesday, January 27th — not the 26th as we’ve heard in previous reports. Additionally, the French site Mac4Ever says developers have been given a beta of the iPhone OS 4 SDK which includes a “simulator” for reformatting / scaling applications to a new, tablet-sized screens. Here at Engadget, we can confirm that sources very familiar with the situation over in Cupertino have been given info about a tablet heading for launch at the end of January, which will — in fact — require reformatting and resizing for (we assume)… yep, its new screen size and resolution. As far as details, they’re pretty scarce right now, but you can probably begin preliminary salivating and / or player hatin’ as it relates to new Apple hardware. We’ll have more info as it becomes available, but for now, stay tuned.

Update: The Wall Street Journal just added its support for the rumor by saying that Apple will unveil its “new multimedia tablet device later this month” with a “10- to 11-inch touch screen” with plans to ship it in March. The WSJ’s sources claim that Apple believes it can “redefine the way consumers interact with a variety of content” as we’ve been hearing all along. [Thanks, David]

LG OLED TV spotted in Korean store showing James Cameron’s magnum opus

LG OLED TV spotted in Korean store showing James Cameron's magnum opusWondering what the endcap for LG’s 15-inch OLED TV would look like if you were able to go see it in South Korea? Wonder no more, our passport-less friend, as YouTuber eurozero captured footage of the thing doing its thing at a retail establishment in Seoul. That video is embedded below, showing off the display’s thinness, but also reminding just how small a 15-inch display looks these days — especially when sitting next to what appears to be a clothes dryer.

Sony VAIO Z to offer ultra-fast “Quad SSD” in RAID 0 configuration, backlit keyboard?

We’ve already given you the leaked specs for the unannounced updates to Sony’s VAIO Z series of laptops. Now here’s what you haven’t heard: that SSD on the feature list is rather special, a “Quad SSD” in Sony language. To quote from the materials we’ve peeped, the Quad SSD is delineated as “SSD RAID0:64GB/128GB x 4.” What’s unclear is whether that means 4x 128GB or 64GB modules for either 512GB or 256GB of RAID 0 storage, or simply 4x flash modules totaling 128GB or 64GB of RAID 0 capacity. Presumably, it’s similar to devices like the PhotoFast GMonster Quad Drive (pictured, with four CF memory cards) that we’ve already seen. What we do know for sure, however, is that Sony’s Quad SSD features incredible throughput compared to a traditional 5400rpm hard disk. We’re talking about writing a 1GB file at about 4 seconds compared to 25 seconds on that same 5400rpm spinner. We’re also told that the VAIO Z will be the first to feature a backlit keyboard, something we’ve been missing from Sony’s previous generation of Zs. It’s CES kids so the truth is only hours away.

Sherwood’s RD-7505 receiver and iNet-2.0 tabletop pull entertainment from the cloud

Sherwood iNet-2.0 tabletop player

Consolidation of the boxes littered around our TVs is one trend we’re happy to see, and for its part, Sherwood is getting onboard with network connectivity. Following the lead of the company’s R-904 NetBoxx, the RD-7505 also got a dose of Verismo’s VuNow tech for accessing content from DLNA, Hulu, YouTube, CinemaNow and internet radio. The RD-7505 also gets a trio of HDMI 1.4 inputs in addition to its seven channels of 110-Watt amplification; but you’ll have to wait until summer to grab one for $500. Next up from Sherwood is the iNet-2.0 tabletop which pairs up its 8-inch display with an alarm clock, internet audio playback and an iPod dock; all of which just might make it a digital photo frame (yeah, it does that too) we’d consider putting in the house. Full details in the PR after the break.

Samsung’s YP-R1 gets firmware update, some of it will cost ya (video)

Samsung's YP-R1 gets firmware update, some of it will cost ya
Firmware updates that improve performance while also boosting battery life? Love ’em. Firmware updates that nickle and dime you for things like new fonts? Hate ’em. So, mixed feelings then on news that Samsung’s YP-R1 media player is getting an update that will make the thing more snappy and more longevous, as shown in the video demonstration after the break. That the company will start charging for things like themes and new text styles, however, seems a bit unfortunate. Also on the for-pay list will be downloadable games, the first of which, Touch & Number, will sell for 2,000 won (about $1.75). It’s no Crash Bandicoot, but sounds just as fun — right?

Three challenges for 3D TV

It’s been promised as “the next big thing” since the advent of color TV. But is there really any consumer demand for 3D television? pOriginally posted at a href=”http://ces.cnet.com/8301-31045_1-10415690-269.html” class=”origPostedBlog”2010 CES/a/p

Helium Digital straps your wrist with HDBT-990 Bluetooth communicator

This Helium Digital HDBT-990 Bluetooth wristband could be a godsend for businessmen who want to avoid sticky wires and phones to answer a call while jogging, except it does look kind of bland (too hard to add a watch?). If appearance isn’t what you’re after, this wristband does offer audible caller ID, A2DP (although it’s unclear if you can get stereo output — we see no headphone jack here; probably just for higher mono fidelity), noise cancellation, and vibration alert for both incoming calls and when your phone is out of range — the latter kind of mimicking the nio Bluetooth tag. Battery-wise it’ll do 4 hours of talk time and 160 hours for standby. All yours for $87 starting in February.

ZOMMWirelessBluetooth.jpg
Ever forget your phone at a restaurant, coffee shop, or bar? Then it might be time to look into getting a ZOMM, a wireless Bluetooth leash that lights up and beeps if it gets too far from your phone. The newly announced product will be launching this week at CES.

ZOMM pairs with any Bluetooth-enabled phone. It features a button for answering calls, a speakerphone, a panic alarm, and a feature that can call for emergency assistance from any locale. The poker-chip-sized device can be attached to your key ring or simply placed in your pocket. The ZOMM company expects to begin selling its device in the second quarter of 2010.

New Horizons Spacecraft Now Halfway to Pluto

NASA_New_Horizons.jpg

Nine years for a trip is a long time by just about any measure. But it’s already halfway over for NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, which is currently on track for a 2015 arrival with Pluto. (You know, the non-planet.)

Space.com reports that the craft is now 1.53 billion miles from Earth, and 1.53 billion miles from Pluto. It will first pass Pluto on July 14th, 2015 before dipping into the Kuiper Belt.

“This is the first of several milestones over the next 10 months that mark the halfway points in our journey to the solar system’s frontier, where Pluto lies,” said Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado and New Horizons principal investigator, in the article.

On a personal note, I was fortunate enough to see Alan Stern speak at the Hayden Planetarium in New York back in 2005, right before the craft launched in January 2006. At the time, he characterized the spacecraft as about the size of a Mini Cooper, and had targeted the summer 2015 date back then as well. (Image credit: NASA)
