Eureka’s EMP cannon destined for the Marines? (video)

Marines serving overseas have a low-tech, time-tested way of stopping cars that ignore checkpoints — namely, a .50-caliber slug to the engine block. Still, that hasn’t prevented companies like Boeing and Eureka Aerospace from pouring tons of money into EMP research. The cannon (whether mounted on aircraft or a squad car) is nowhere near ready for prime time — but when has that stopped the Pentagon from sinking tons of money into something? And the USAF isn’t the only organization getting involved: according to Flightglobal, the Marine Corps is getting its own demo of the 55lb device (which can disable cars up to 200 meters away) next month at Dahlgren naval warfare center. Vintage autos (really anything manufactured before the mid-1970s) won’t be harmed by the weapon, meaning that there still may be a place for lead slugs in modern peacekeeping missions after all. Video after the break.

Motorola launching 20-30 Android phones in 2010

Some interesting tidbits came out of Motorola’s DEXT launch in Singapore today — CNET Asia had a chance to sit down with Moto’s Asia Pacific VP Spiro Nikolakopoulos, who said that the company would launch between 20 to 30 Android phones globally in 2010. Spiro also said that not every phone would make it to every market, so we’re guessing the true number will be more like 10 if you count regional variants like the CLIQ and the DEXT as one model. Just by our count, Moto’s already pretty close: off the tops of our heads we’ve heard of the Shadow, the Devour, the Backflip, the Ruth, and several others destined for China — rather impressive for a company that was on the brink of collapse just a short while ago. No wonder it’s reconsidering that spinoff, eh?

[Thanks, Hiro]

Wi-Fire long-range WiFi adapter gets updated Mac software

We didn’t run into too many problems with the existing Mac software for the Wi-Fire WiFi range extender in our brief time with the device, but it looks like hField Technologies has decided to make Mac users’ lives a bit easier nonetheless, with it now releasing an updated version for OS X. Among other things, version 2.0 now finally includes an icon that sits in the menu bar for easy access, and fully revamped connection manager that sports a decidedly more Apple-like appearance. Unfortunately, you’ll still have to wait a bit for an 802.11n upgrade, but the software update is at least free, and available to download right now.

Neo Myth flash cart for N64 puts your ROMS where they belong (video)

N64 emulators are equal parts fun and frustrating: it’s great having access to all those ROMs, but wouldn’t you rather play ’em on the actual console? The Neo N64 Myth is a flash cart for your Nintendo 64 that lets you transfer games from your PC to a cart via USB. This bad boy features support for ROMs up to 512MB, all save types (it will even let you back up the saves on your PC), up to two games at the same time, and more. Sure, at $200 some might say that you’re probably better off just buying the carts you want off eBay — but they’re either not as hardcore as you or as well-heeled as you. Hit the source link to see for yourself, but not before checking out the review posted to the DCEmu.uk forums: they put the thing through its paces, and they find that it holds up pretty, pretty well. Video after the break.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz is official: 8.1 megapixels’ worth of Symbian

We get the impression that Sony Ericsson didn’t intend for this release to go out quite yet, but for what it’s worth, we’ve now got official word that the rumored Kurara is the real deal — and it’ll be known as “Vivaz.” Yes, Vivaz. Okay, now that you’ve had a moment to recover, let’s take a look at the specs: S60 5th Edition (we’re surprised they don’t refer to it as a Symbian build in the release, but whatevs), 8.1 megapixel autofocus cam with image stabilization, face detection, and 720p video capture, FM radio, AGPS, WiFi, TV-out at VGA resolution, and a 3.2-inch WVGA (or 640 x 360… the PR lists both) display. It’ll be available in four colors — Moon Silver, Cosmic Black, Galaxy Blue, and Venus Ruby — when it launches this quarter in both North American and global 3G variants with quadband EDGE. If you can get over the name, you love Symbian, and the Satio isn’t for you, this might be your new objet d’envy for the first few months of the year. Follow the break for a hip-looking Sony Ericsson dude showing off the goods.

Update: And it appears Burson-Marsteller has pulled the release, so yep — it wasn’t supposed to go out yet. Enjoy!

Boxee unleashing one-click Payment Platform this summer

Free (legal) TV, minimal advertising and a slick, usable interface… too good to be true? Yes, of course. Boxee‘s solving for the future with its newly announced Boxee Payment Platform, which will arrive this summer. Users will be able to buy shows, movies and channels with “one click on the remote,” with content owners having control over package types (pay-per-view, subscription) and prices. Boxee will naturally be taking a cut, but says it’s lower than the now de facto 30% cut of app stores. Boxee sees this co-existing with free, ad-supported content, authenticated stuff like TV Everywhere, and of course regular Cable, Satellite and IPTV providers. We suppose the real testament to Boxee’s success in pulling this off will be the variety, quality and price of the content it obtains — we can already get a smattering of shows and movies on iTunes, Zune and PSN, but if Boxee can get us more, make it easier, or charge us less, it’s going to be hard to complain about that funky little Boxee Box taking up valuable shelf space in our living room.
